Songs That Sustain Me – Come Ye Sinners

Greetings Dear Reader,

I miss my Grandfather almost daily lately.  This was one of his favorite hymns.  He would sing it when driving or working in his garden.  He would use phrases of it in his preaching almost every Sunday.  The song is part of my hard wiring.  I find it drifting through my mind un-beaconed.  It reminds me of just how far I have to go and how far I have already come.

The link I have provided is Michael Card’s recording of it.  There are other treatments of this three hundred year old song by other artists.  They are all excellent.  Joseph Hart’s words are timeless.

The thing that propels me in this song is the universality of the need.  I believe that everyone needs Jesus.  That is not a condemnation of those who do not believe it.  We naturally wish to share the great things in our lives.  I wish for everyone to see Jesus as I see him.

by Joseph Hart

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, love and power

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O, there are ten thousand charms

Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome
God's free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh

Come, ye weary, heavy-laden
Lost and ruined by the fall
If you tarry 'til you're better
You will never come at all

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O, there are ten thousand charms

See Him Prostate in the garden
On the ground your Maker lies
On the bloody tree, behold him
Sinner, will this not suffice?

Lo! th’ incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of His blood:
Venture on Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude.

Let not conscience make you linger,
Not of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Mat 13:52 So Jesus said to them, "That is why every writer who has become a disciple of Christ’s rule of the universe is like a home owner. He liberally hands out new and old things from his great treasure store."
