I’m a Soul Man – Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Happy All Hallows Eve.  As I think through my feelings on the souls of men I ponder the need to treat everyone as hallowed.  I see the value of everyone.  If I do not then I dare not be arrogant enough to think my soul has value.

Tomorrow will be the celebration of all saints and Monday the day for all souls.  I must hallow every day for the sake of the souls of humans.  I must set apart my life to the Gospel.  I must love everyone.  I must deal in grace and mercy.  I must leave my imprint for good and not ill.

I believe some difficult things.  Some of those beliefs seem outdated or untenable to others.  I must continue to eradicate the things in me that hinder living out the commands to love God and others.  I must hallow all that I am for the sake of the Gospel of Christ.  After all, if I am wrong and I live a life filled  with doing my best to love others I cannot see how I lose anything.

I Pledge Head to Heaven – Keith Green

Well, I pledge my head to heaven for the gospel,
And I ask no man on earth to fill my needs.
Like the sparrow up above, I am enveloped in his love,
And I trust him like those little ones, he feeds.

Well I pledge my wife to heaven, for the gospel,
Though our love each passing day just seems to grow.
As I told her when we wed, Id surely rather be found dead,
Than to love her more than the one who saved my soul.
I’m your child, and I want to be in your family forever.
I’m your child, and I’m going to follow you,
No matter whatever the cost, I’m gonna count all things lost.

Well I pledge my son to heaven for the gospel.
Though he’s kicked and beaten, ridiculed and scorn.
I will teach him to rejoice and life a thankful praising voice,
And to be like him who bore the nails and crown of thorns.
I’m your child, and I want to be in your family forever.
I’m your child, and I’m going to follow you,
No matter whatever the cost, I’m gonna count all things lost.
Oh no matter whatever the cost, I’m gonna count all things lost.

Well I’ve had the chance to gain the world, and to live just like a king,
But without your love, it doesn’t mean a thing.
Oh no matter whatever the cost, I’m gonna count all things lost,
Oh no matter whatever the cost, I’m gonna count all things lost.

Well I pledge my son, I pledge my wife, I pledge my head to heaven,
I pledge my son, I pledge my wife, I pledge my head to heaven, for the gospel

I’m a Soul Man – A Response

Greetings Dear Reader,

Thank you for disagreeing with me.  Thank you for doing so thoughtfully and respectfully.  For those who did not see I will re-post the comment here so that we have context.

“I have to simply disagree with this particular opinion. It is totally unclear whether the mind and body are separate things even in the vast majority of Christian religions.
There also happens to be plenty of good thought put into the idea that what we call our soul is real only insofar as it is an idea.

The malady that is vaguely referenced here is the major religious view that people are evil and in need of salvation.

Many "saved" people act out on evil, and their souls are bot remedied by the tired of Christian salvation. Many Muslims, atheists, and generally agnostic people act out for the good of humanity. They do not "try to do good". They do good. In fact, many do so with no reason besides making the world a little better while they struggle on its soil.
This is not to say that Christians are bad. There are good Christians. There are Christians that understand that no one is evil by nature. It is to say that people can serve other people for humanity's sake just as well.as they could serve any god. What do you think?”

As I have said clearly before my view is based on a biblical world view.  I do understand that many detract from the idea that we have clearly separate entities.  Jesus made it clear that there is a distinction.  “Don't be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell.”

I do believe that people are fallen and in need of redemption.  It is based on clear statements from both the Old and New Testament that we are.  The entire first three chapters of Romans are dedicated to the idea that we are all in need of redemption no matter how good or moral we are.

You are right Dear Reader that people do not just try to do good.  There are good moral people who accomplish much that is noble and lasting.  The problem is that we are not measured by this.  We are measured by our faith and following.

It is true that many who claim to follow Christ do that which is evil.  It is true that many who do not believe live honorable and charitable lives.  That is not, however, how we are measured by God. If a Christian rejects that idea that we are fallen by nature then I would like to hear them address the clear statements from the Bible that say we are.

One of the driving factors in my life is that I care for the souls of women and men.  I see everyone as eternal.  I see everyone as fallen and in need of redemption.  This is not a judgment but rather compassion out of obedience to the truth.  Even the greatest command says we must Love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind.  Why would Jesus make the distinction if there were not one?

I’m a Soul Man - Interdependence

Greetings Dear Reader,

We are at least two parted beings.  Some think we are three parted.  Whether we are body, soul, and spirit or body and soul we are more than just flesh and bones.  If we do not accept this then we ignore a vital interdependence.

Many people attempt to feed the spiritual part of the being whilst refusing to acknowledge the existence of it.  People feed the spirit by trying to be moral or good.  The problem is that the soul still has a malady without faith and redemption.

If I live as if I do not have an eternal soul then I will put things ahead of its care.  Morals and values become preferences not necessities.  Spiritual truths become opinions not mandates from God.  The lines of right and wrong become unclear.

I must assure that I see everyone as soul in need of love and care.  If I proceed from the eternal nature of my congress with others then I am likely to be more careful what I say and do.  If I see my own being as eternal then I am likely to be  more particular what I do when I am alone.

The body is fed by the soul much more than by food and drink.  If I tend the soul then the body benefits.  The opposite is true in a lesser way.  The nature of things is that we are eternal.  I want to do and say things that echo positively through the eternal.  In that I must be always vigilant.

I’m a Soul Man – 21 Grams

Greetings Dear Reader,

In the early twentieth century, Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts performed a series of experiments to determine if the soul had weight.  He concluded that it did.  Over the decades this has been accepted and rejected.

An intriguing movie titled 21 Grams treats the subject with interest.  It is worth the couple of hours to watch.  It raises the question of the weight of the soul.  The weight is not as important as the worth.  The movie also addresses this well.

We live in a soul where we value 21 grams of gold far above the human soul.  We value so many things more that the life of humans.  We will allow souls to be dispensed over oil, drugs, and politics.  We have relegated the idea of the soul to the children’s table.  We do not treat souls as the precious things they are.

Whether or not Dr. MacDougall was correct we need to consider the worth of the soul.  If I see everyone as eternal it motivates me to treat them better.  If I see that every soul has needs then perhaps I will do more to meet those needs.  It does not matter what I amass here if I do not feed the souls around me.  They are hungry for love, grace, and kindness.

It is my obligation to see the souls around me.  It is my privilege to see people as more than tissue and systems.  It is my joy to once in a while feel as if I have nourished that which is eternal.

The Touch of the Masters Hand - Myra 'Brooks' Welch

T’was battered and scarred, and the auctioneer thought it scarcely worth his while
to waste much time on the old violin, but held it up with a smile;
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar"; then two!"
"Only two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars twice; going for three." But no,
from the room, far back, a gray-haired man came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin, and tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet as caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
Said; "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow.
A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, and going and gone," said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried, "We do not quite understand
What changed its worth." Swift came the reply:
"The touch of a master's hand."

And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin,
A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine; a game - and he travels on.
"He is going" once, and "going twice, He's going and almost gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that's wrought by the touch of the Master's hand.

I’m a Soul Man – Constitutional Issues

Greetings Dear Reader,

It occurs to me that no matter what belief system one adopts if that system focuses on the soul and it eternal nature it also focuses on peace and kindness.  It is common that the eternal view leads to long term thinking about our lives, the world, and our actions.

The problem is a constitutional one.  We are a soul.  We are eternal and the choices we make have an eternal impact.  If we deny that then we are not seeing our constitution accurately.  When we put the body above the soul then we tend to care for our wants over what is best for us.

Some people manage to care for their soul without faith.  Many do not.  The accountability factor is important.  It is more important to see that there is something beyond ourselves.  The journey is not just the brief voyage of the body from cradle to grave.  It is the transmigration of the soul during that time that is eternal.

We neglect the soul and then over-indulge the body.  We live for what we want instead of what we need.  It does not matter if we simply embrace a non-eternal view or dive into the greater vices.  It impacts us and how we treat others.

The solution to the so many problems is admitting that I have a problem.  My soul must be invested in the eternal.  I must see everyone as eternal.  I do my best to do that.  Every life matters both soul and body.  If I hope to follow Christ then I will live as if everyone is eternal.

I’m a Soul Man – Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is not unusual that we focus on the wrong things.   It is not even uncommon.  If we ponder that then we see that it runs deep in us.  We worry more about our lattes than we do the homeless.  We mourn over football scores instead of healthcare.  We argue over politics instead of changing the world.

We exercise the body and ignore the soul.  C.S. Lewis said, “You don’t have a soul.  You are a soul.  You have a body.”  Our focus on what we build, nourish, and tend is so very out of balance.  An eternal soul traveling through this weigh station called life matters.

Jesus came to redeem the souls of all humans.  He wanted to rescue us from the malady that separates us from God.  As we approach All Souls Day I want to assure that I am nourishing mine.  It is interesting to see the seeming contradictions between what is good for the soul and what we do.

Walk with me a bit whilst I prepare for All Souls, All Saints, Thanksgiving, and Advent.  Perhaps we can establish a routine that is not routine to nourish that which lasts beyond this mortal coil.

Jesus Lover of my Soul – Michael Card

Jesus, lover of my soul
Let me to Thy bosom fly
While the nearer waters roll
While the tempest still is high
Hide me, O my Savior, hide
Till the storm of life is past
Safe into the haven guide
O receive my soul at last

Other refuge have I none
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee
Leave, oh! leave me not alone
Still support and comfort me
All my trust in Thee is stayed
All my help from Thee I bring
Cover my defenseless head
With the shadow of Thy wing

Thou, O Christ, art all I want
More than all in Thee I find
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint
Heal the sick, and lead the blind
Just and holy is Thy Name
I am all unrighteousness
False and full of sin am I
Thou art full of truth and grace

Plenteous grace with Thee is found
Grace to cover all my sin
Let the healing streams abound
Make and keep me pure within
Thou of life the fountain art
Freely let me drink of Thee
Spring Thou up within my heart
Rise to all eternity

Kangaroo in a Pram

Greetings Dear Reader,

First let me explain that a pram is a stroller.  Improvements in the design and function of these have made the old ones from my youth scarce.  This is why when I saw the one I was it caught my attention.

My Daughter Christmas had recently come to live with us from Australia.  She was missing things Australian. In an attempt to cheer her up we were going to the movies   we were seeing the movie Australia.  I always arrive at the theatre early so I can get the seats I want.

We settled into our seats and were discussing how we could combat her sadness.  This was when I saw a couple come in with the large old pram.  They settled under one of the sconces and were cast in a dim but discernible light.  I looked carefully and was sure the “child” in the pram was odd looking at best.  Then I was sure it was an adolescent kangaroo.

I made certain before pointing it out to Christmas.  She did not believe and did not even look in that direction.  I had to insist.  I could see the hurt in her eyes as she thought I was playing a cruel joke on her.  Then she looked, gasped, and leapt from here seat.  She then caught herself.  She was not far enough removed from having someone control her every action to just go.  I nodded and she went.  The remainder of before the movie and some time after the movie was spent in deep discussion with the owners of the Joey.

The young kangaroo was being trained as a companion animal.  Christmas was filled with excitement and joy at the serendipitous meeting.  Her loneliness for familiar things was abated.  My understanding that God knows our need sooner than we do was renewed.

I have seen things for which the coincidence factor is untenable.  I do not believe in chance or happenstance.  I do forget sometimes just how deeply God is involved in everything.  I need to recall this when I feel discouraged or uncertain.   The Father will supply all of my needs.  All I need do is follow in faith.

Meteors and Coyotes

Greetings Dear Reader,

Last night was an adventure.  My eldest Son, my Grandsons, and my Daughter accompanied me to view the Orionid Meter Shower.  We took the short hike up one of the tallest hills in the city.  It offers a great view of the sky and puts one above most of the light pollution.

The early evening clouds were clearing and we could easily see by the moon light.  At the top of the hill it was cool but the wind was light.  We were searching for a place to watch when the evening quiet was disturbed.  A single keening wail belayed the quiet of the hill.  It was soon answered by another and then a third.

There have been several reports recently about coyotes attacking small dogs in the area.  Here we were on the edge of a large wood with two small children.  They were instantly warry.  They moved toward their father knowing they were safe with him.

After a bit the howling became more frequent and obviously closer.  We chose to retreat from the hill and take the children home.  On the way down the hill we spoke of how cool it was that they heard real coyotes.  What impressed me was something much different.

My Grandsons are smart, creative, and bold.  When they felt fear they knew they were safe with their father.  They knew that he would protect them and keep them by his side.  In the moment neither my Daughter nor I mattered.  I got to witness a beautiful moment of them expressing deep seated faith in their father.

I want my faith to be that deep when it comes to the Father.  I want to instantly depend on him and know that my fears have no power in his presence.  I arose early this morning to see the meteor shower.  While watching the sky I thought of how much God must love me to create such vast beauty and still wish to be a Father to me even when I treat him with disrespect or ignore him.

I got to see my meteors. I got to revel in the faith of my Grandsons in their father.  Sitting under the vast beauty of the cosmos I feel so small.  I have fears and concerns.  The same God who created all the wonders I see is my Father.  He loves me.  He moves daily to bring us all back to the safety and peace of his love.  What more do I need?

The Needs Among Us

Greetings Dear Reader,

When I first moved to Wisconsin I worked as a job coach in supported employment.  I was privileged to help people with physical and mental challenges have jobs that were meaningful.  To my constant pride and joy my sons have both chosen to work in this field.

Last night I attended a hearing where those with the greatest need were begging the county for a minimal cost of living increase.  Scattered among the pleas were also requests for conservation efforts, funding for programs, and park improvement.

I have watched the organizations that provide care for this population beg the county every year for better funding.  These organizations are not trying to get rich.  They are trying to secure a living wage for their workers and needs based funding for the population they support.  It breaks my heart that such dedicated people have to beg for funding.

When will we learn that our character is revealed in how we care for the needy?  When will we get as a people that if we do not support those who need it to live “normal” lives then our lattes and smart phones are just extensions of our greed?  I left this work because I could not meet my family obligations on the pay.

The people who work in this field give up holidays with their families so that those they serve can have holidays.  The job never stops with the five o’clock whistle.  Their hearts get broken as they watch those they serve lose funding that could provide better quality of life.  The money they need goes to buy more parks and recreation space so little kids can feed the ducks.

How can we call ourselves Christ followers when we fail to support this community who deserves and needs it?  How can we hope to reach them with the Gospel when we tolerate practiced social injustice for the workers and the served?  It breaks my heart that the dedication and efforts of this group leave them begging for bread that gets fed to ducks instead.

God of justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served

Jesus, You have called us
Freely we've received
Now freely we will give

We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken, we must go
Stepping forward, keep us from just singing
Move us into action, we must go

To act justly every day
Loving mercy in every way
Walking humbly before You, God

You have shown us, what You require
Freely we've received
Now freely we will give

Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out, Lord

Listen and Silent – Closing Thoughts – The Final Word

Greetings Dear Reader,

Using two ears and one mouth, listening with the heart, and speaking in love are all great things.  I think that the failure of the church to listen to the world has caused it to lose its right to be heard.  We do not seek to understand before we demand to be understood.  That is shameful and prideful.

As Christ followers we have something to say to the world.  We cannot be that voice for Christ if we do not earn the right to be heard.  We can only do that through listening.  The object is not for us to be heard.  It is for Christ to be heard.

It is not our words that matter.  It is our hearing what the world needs.  It is responding with silent giving, grace, and goodness.  It is not Bible thumping to prove a point.  It is humbly living out the Gospel socially.  It is not chest pounding over our good deeds.  It is listening when the world sees us not being what we are supposed to be and taking corrective action.

We have no need to speak unnecessarily.   God provided the final word on all things.  It is my duty to live in such a way that people wish to hear that word.  I must be silent until they do. I must listen to their needs and act on them.

The Final Word - Michael Card

You and me we use so very many clumsy words.
The noise of what we often say is not worth being heard.
When the Father's wisdom wanted to communicate His love,
He spoke it in one final perfect Word.

He spoke the incarnation, and then so was born a Son.
His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one.
Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine.
And so was born a baby who would die to make it mine.

And so the Father's fondest took on flesh and bone.
He spoke the living luminous word, at once His will was done.
And so the transformation that in man had been unheard,
Took place in God the Father as he spoke that final Word.

He spoke the incarnation, and then so was born a Son.
His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one.
Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine.
And so was born a baby who would die to make it mine.

And so the Light became alive and manna became Man.
Eternity stepped into time so we could understand.

He spoke the incarnation, and then so was born a Son.
His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one.
Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine.
And so was born a baby who would die to make it mine.

And so was born a baby who would die to make it mine.

Listen and Silent – Strategy of Silence

Greetings Dear Reader,

I do not argue over theology.  I used to do and do so well.  Then it occurred to me that we are not to quarrel over words.  We are not supposed to be argumentative but rather to let the good we do speak for us.

I see this as a strategy of silence.  Not everyone gets that.  I still encounter people who want to argue theology with me when they learn that I have studied it.  I must not engage in argument.  Even if I win the argument I do damage to the cause.  God does not need my intellect, energy, and wit to make himself known to others.

He does need my example, service, and sacrifice for others.  He does use my silent love and compassion.   Not everyone will hear me.  I cannot always meet the expectations of others.  People expect me to be and do certain things.  Those things do not always line up with my beliefs or with how Christ followers who are supposed to live.

When others engage in boasting, arguing, or condemning others based on theology I abstain or I try to take the position of what we are supposed to represent.  Silence has lease to listen, hear, and be compassionate.  Silence is the strategy whereby others can see the Gospel without me getting in the way.

There are those who want me to engage in argument.  I can speak to the reason for the hope I have.  That is not the same as arguing.  I must speak love into the lives of others by being silent and living righteously.  I must perfect my life.  I must use silence to earn the right to be heard.

Stillness and Simplicity – Michael Card

In stillness and simplicity
In the silence of the heart I see
The mystery of eternity
Who lives in side of me

In stillness and simplicity
I hear the Spirit's silent plea
That You, oh Lord, are close to me
In stillness and simplicity

You're the Word
Who must be heard
By those who listen quietly
Is the reason we're not still

To hear You speak because
We don't believe You will
In stillness and simplicity
I lose myself in finding Thee

Oh Lord, You mean so much to me
In stillness and simplicity
So, seek the One who dwells in you
The kingdom that within is true

That innermost reality
In stillness and simplicity

Listen and Silent – Not Listening

Greetings Dear Reader,

This is one of those things that as a species we seem to be losing.  We do not listen to each other.  We argue.  We fight.  We war.  We do not really listen.  We want to say our part, position, and piece but in our demand to be heard we do not remember that others must be heard as well.

Fully engaged listening communicates so much to others.  It is one of the ways in which we can communicate love, respect, and compassion.  It also helps the listener to understand and ask good questions.  It helps the listener think about others rather than be self-centered.

Christ followers should be seen a real listeners.  Listening does not equal agreement or approval.  Genuine listening does not hurt us.  It does not compromise us.  It does make it clear to others that we are engaged and that we care.  It does give us a path to see the needs of others.

I know I am good at listening.  I am not always good at making sure others know I am listening.  Sometimes my multitasking makes it appear that I am not listening.  Sometimes I do not really listen.  I must see the gift that someone being real with me.is.  I must love and respect that gift.  I must listen as I would have others listen to me.  It really is that simple.

Listen and Silent – A Clutch

Greetings Dear Reader,

My current vehicle is the first I have had in twenty years that was not a manual transmission.  Over the years I have taught many people how to drive a manual shifting car. In doing this I learned some lessons about silence.

The gas is responsive and communicates.  When one applies the gas the engine revs.  The clutch is silent and requires trust.  The clutch engages and does its job without saying anything.  There are rules we lean ahead of time.  There is a right way to apply the gas and release the clutch.  We learn to time the silence in harmony with the release to create the motion we need.  The clutch asks us to trust the silence and just engage.  We have to do to get the results.

God often asks the same of us.  He has laid out the rules and requirements.  He asks us to trust the silence.  He requires that we engage in faith.  He insists that we move forward trusting the silence and listening for the evidence in that silence.

If I am to follow properly then I must engage the silence.  I must engage the movement of God within that silence.  This is how I give hands and feet to my faith.  It is how I live it out without burning bushes and parting seas.

Listen and Silent - Conversations in a Diner

Greetings Dear Reader,

I am out having breakfast as I write this today.  My favorite waitress is fussing at the cook.  Another is worried that her life is not going as she wishes.  Two elderly gentlemen next to me are discussing the Jumble.  One of them lives in chronic pain and tells about his progress each week when we dine together.

Most of the time I eat here alone.  It gives me a chance to listen.  It gives me opportunity to pray for and be good to people who will talk out loud to each other about their woes.  They presume that the booth gives them anonymity.  It gives me opportunity to be someone who cares just by listening.

I would challenge those of you who pray to go out there and listen.  Hear the snippets around you and pray for the people you do not know.  Take the opportunity give to someone who cannot repay you.  Take the opportunity to use your faith to make a difference that they may never know.

Johnny’s Café – John Fischer

Wasting the day down at Johnny’s Café,
All kinds of people there with plenty to say,
If you got nothing to say to folks at Johnny’s Café,
You got nothing to say at all.

Walk in any day and you’ll find a slice of life at your table;
One man leaving his wife another wishing he was able,
An old man trying to forget a young one looking for a label,
And the stories they tell you can’t tell if they’re true of they’re fable.

And the lady pouring coffee she knows the regulars by name.
If she doesn’t know you she calls you “honey” just the same.
And we all love to hear it,
Even if she has to fake it,
‘Cause it’s nice to think that someone really cares;
Someone cares.

Go spend the day down at Johnny’s Café,
All kinds of people there with plenty to say,
If you got nothing to say to folks at Johnny’s Café,
You got nothing to say at all.

Half a mile down the road you’ll find a church with a steeple.
And on Sundays the pews are full of well-dressed beautiful people.
There’s a leading politician whose wife is musician in the choir.
A corporation head who is trying to get a little bit higher.

And the preacher pouring sermons he knows the regulars by name.
If he doesn’t know you he’ll shake your hand just the same.
And we all love to hear it,
Even if we have to fake it,
But it would be nice if someone really cared;
Someone cared.

Go spend the day down at Johnny’s Café,
All kinds of people there with plenty to say,
Now if Jesus were here I think we’d find him today down at Johnny’s café.

Second Thoughts - Wanted: Cheese Police

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

A police officer friend of mine made me aware of a new drug problem that has been discovered.  Apparently cheese can be as additive as opiates reports a recent article on the matter.  I can see this spawning an entire new form of law enforcement.

We will need to be prepared to defend against cheddar pushers.  There will need to be a war on all forms of stinky cheese.  I am sure we need to appoint a cheese czar.  Perhaps customs agents will need to search all travelers for cheese contraband.  Who would have thought we would need to defend against cheese smugglers?

Grocery stores will need to close off the cheese sections and assign someone to control the substance.  I suppose the additive properties of various cheeses will need to be classified and cataloged.  There will need to be government funded studies to determine which cheeses do what to lab rats and monkeys.  A special cheese tax will be needed to fund these studies.

Since cheese is on the approved list for government funded subsidies those will need revision.  Wisconsin will likely have to become “The Dairy State (except for addictive cheeses)”.  Party trays and sub shops will need to redefine the contents of their offerings.   Swiss Colony would not be a drug cartel.

Cannabis advocates can now rail against the legal status of cheese.  They can taut the benefits of grass over cheese.  Then again the proof of cannabis being a gateway drug could be stronger due to the number of cheese curls, nacho cheese chips, and pizzas consumed during “the munchies.”

Chucky Cheese and The Cheesecake Factory will have to close their doors.  All cheese based deserts will have to go.  Raids of illegal wine and cheese parties will be required.  Licensed cheese makers (yes they exist) will need to be registered with the DEA.  Cheese must be seen as the new heroin.

There will be much debate in the near future.  Much of life will need to change for many of us.  Macaroni, ham, and crackers will need to find a new partner.  Calling someone “cheesy” will now be a deeper insult.  Life will go on but for now the cheese will have to stand alone.

Listen and Silent – Listening with the Heart

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is not enough to listen.  It is not enough to listen attentively.  I was reminded recently that even though I know I am listening the person speaking make not.  It is not enough to listen.  One must listen with the heart.

It is easy to move away from real listening.  We think we know what the other person will say.  We believe we know the answer and we do not let the other person work it out.  I have people in my life who work out how they feel by talking to others.  If I am too quick to think I know the answer then I am not listening.

My interruptions and solutions, even when they are spot on are a signal that my heart is not engaged with the person talking.  It does not matter if I present a solution that could work world peace if I do not hear the heart of the other person with my heart.

Listening must be with all that I am.  I must consider how I wish to be heard.  I need to seek first to understand before trying to be understood.  I need to see the heart of another in what they are saying.  I must listen with my heart not just my head.  I must see the needs spoken and unspoken in the conversation of others.

It is in this that I can inject kindness and compassion.  If I ask someone to trust me with how they feel.  If I offer to listen and do not respond with compassion I am not keeping faith. I am not worthy of trust.

If I do listen with my heart and show love and compassion then I can perhaps make a difference.  I can perhaps make the journey easier for someone else.  I must listen with my heart to do this.

Good Man – Burlap to Cashmere

He was walking down the highway
And you saw him straggling along
And you reached out
Opened up your door
And you gave him a ride
To your heavenly home

God his mother, she won't listen
And his father hated his old man
But you listened to his feelings
And your eyes consistently understand
Yes, your eyes consistently understand

He was a good man.  He lived a good life
He was a good man.  He lived a good life
But he was dancing to the bright lights
He was dying for some love

Well, you see him with his guitar
Down the highway, he would walk along
Singin' old songs, singin' Sunday blues
But his school bells were his only song
Yes his school bells were his only song

Through the fire, through the lying sun
Through the smoke and fog
Through the day that's done
There was strength there
There was hope alive
There were strings of peace
From the other side
There were strings of peace
From the other side

He was a good man.  He lived a good life
He was a good man.  He lived a good life
But he was dancing to the bright lights
He was dying for some love

Don't you see he's falling away?
Thank God for the love that you gave
Only love can put out a fire
And only love was calling him
Higher and higher

He was a good man.  He lived a good life
He was a good man.  He lived a good life
But he was dancing to the bright lights
He was dying for some love

He was a good man.  He lived a good life
He was a good man.  He lived a good life
And you were right there, for the hard times
You were there again and again
Again and again, again and again

He was walking
Down the highway
Gave him a ride to your heavenly home
Gave him the ride to your heavenly home

Listen and Silent – Will You not Listen

Greetings Dear Reader,

If I believe that life is a listening and I do believe it, then I must always listen for the voice of God.  I realize this sounds mystical and hearing God cannot be empirically proven.  I do, however, hear him.

Perhaps one of the reasons that belief is hard for people is because they do not take the risk of listening.  If we enter into any other conversation believing that the other person will not speak then we are likely not to hear even if they do so.

My Grandfather used to always say that God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.  We should listen twice as much as we speak.  We should listen for the purpose of hearing.  We listen to others to get to know them.  Why will we not do the same for God?

I am not talking about listening to the things other Christ followers tell us to hear.  I am talking about an honest look at what God asks us to see in him.  Believers and unbelievers ask us to put so many filters in place.  All Christ as is that we follow in faith the commands to love God and love humans.

If we look into the Word of God with only that filter things become much clearer.  If we listen to everything with that understanding it becomes easier to see God.  The strategy is to really listen, then hear, and follow.

If I listen perhaps it can benefit others as well.  If I practice listening to God perhaps I will listen to others better.  One cannot hear if they do not listen.

Will You not Listen – Michael Card

Is not He who formed the ear
Worth the time it takes to hear?
Should He who formed our lips for speaking
Be not heeded when He speaks?

Will you not listen?
Why won't you listen?
God has spoken love to us
Why will you not listen?

Listen to the sacred silence
Listen to the Holy Word
Listen as He speaks through living
Parables that must be heard
Will you not listen?
Why won't you listen?

God has spoken peace to us
Why will you not listen?
He spoke a word of flesh and blood
Flesh and blood that bled and died
Bled and died just to be heard
How could you not hear this Word?

Why will you not hear this Word?
Will you not listen?
Why won't you listen?
God has spoken hope to us
How could you not listen?
Why will you not listen?
How could you not listen?

Listen and Silent – Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Someone reminded me the other day that listen and silent are spelled with the same letters.  It takes a proper application of both to hear someone.  We cannot just listen with our ears.  We have to have a real strategy of silence to hear others.  We have to earn the right to be heard.

I have been told I am a good listener but I also do not always communicate good listening.  I need to think my way through the parts of me that need fine tuning so that I become a better listener and hearer.  I need to remember when to speak and when to be silent.

I have adopted a strategy of silence in many areas.  I may have been too silent in some areas.  I think that it is that I have felt like I lost the right to be heard.  It does not matter how I feel if I do not reach our when I should.  There are times when I must engage no matter how I feel.

I will spend some time working through this.  I will ponder the balance toward which I must work.  There are still places where I must keep silent.  I am still learning there are places where I must speak.  I am also remembering to make sure people know that I am listening.  Feel free to walk with me Dear Reader.  I always value your company.

The Vigil – Kemper Crabb

Waiting for flame in eye of night, I am the fuel for your fire
Light calls ever unto light. Make me a fleshen pyre.
Touch my lips with the altering coal; leave your shining upon my soul.
Zion shall ever be my goal; Zion the telling of light.

Scanning the silence with inward ears; life is a listening.
Enfolded in echoes of timeless years; the Word comes whistling.
Build my being from your throat; meld my meaning with every note.
Wrap me round in an aural cloak, so I may truly hear.

Drawn towards destinies darkling kite, riven by reality
Riding the passion to terrible height, life upon death’s tree
Cause me to drink from the chalice of fire. Forge me anew in the heat of desire
Let me inhabit the holy empire and make war on the armies of night.

A Feverish Reflection

Greetings Dear Reader,

So I avoided the illness that has been sweeping my coworkers for over a month.  It has finally found me and forced me to rest.  Since I love what I do missing it for the sake of a fever and the sniffles seems an intrusion.

The truth, however, is that I probably am pushing myself too hard.  I probably need the rest.  So a couple of days of hot soup, hot tea, and rest are in order.  I like that it gives me time to pray.  I like that it lets me catch up on my reading.

I hate feeling that I have to nap.  I hate naps.  When I am sick I am always glad I did.  I think that following Christ in all of this is a lesson in yieldedness.  It is a reminder of how little I control.  It is a call to follow in faith that I cannot be everything I want to be without taking care of my health.

Even in the obedience of rest I can follow.  So that is what I will do.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Music that Moves Me – Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Life has so many major and minor keys.  We often do not get to choose which key life plays for us.  We do get to choose how we deal with.  We get to determine our responses.

When life is playing a minor key for me whether it is physical, emotional, or social I must determine my responses.  I must determine if you will “how I sing along.”  If I choose not to sing along things do not get better.  I cannot check out of life.  I cannot change the key but I can find the right notes to follow.

Not to take the metaphor too far but I must join in the harmony if I am to make it through the tough times.  It was recently pointed out to me that when I am in this place I still need to be aware of those around me.  My obligation to them is not lessened by my situation.  I am thankful that someone loves me enough to point this out.

I will use music to constantly remind me that I must be better today than yesterday no matter my circumstances.   No matter what the key the piper that calls my tune loves me and will be there.  All he requires of me is that I follow in faith.  That is where the joy is found in the journey.

Job Suite – Michael Card

Blameless and upright, a fearer of God
A man truly righteous, no pious façade
One about whom God was accustomed to boast
And so one whom Satan desired the most

One day the accuser came breathing out lies
It's you, holy handouts his faithfulness buys
In one desperate day his possessions were lost
His children all killed in one raw holocaust
His children all killed in one raw holocaust

And yet through it all, through the tears and pain
He worshiped his God, found no reason to blame

Once more the Deceiver denounced and decried
It's skin for skin and hide for hide
Strike down his flesh and he'll surely deny
And confess that his praying has all been a lie

Very well, take him, the Holy One sighed
But you must spare his life, my son shall not die
So Job was afflicted with terrible sores
Sat down in the ashes to wait for the Lord
Sat down in the ashes to wait for the Lord

And yet through it all, through the tears and pain
He worshiped his God, found no reason to blame
A throne of ashes, a crown of pain
A sovereign of sorrow, a mournful reign

May the day of my birth be remembered no more
May darkness and shadow come claim it once more
Why did I not perish on that dreadful day
And sleep now where kings and counselors lay?

What I dreaded most has now come upon me
Why is light giver those in misery?
I loathe my own life so my tears fall like rain
As I find that there is no peace in my pain

Lord, send a comforter now to my door
So that this terror will frighten no more
A counselor between us to come hear my oath
Someone who could lay a hand on us both

These friends of mine are no comfort to me
So deafly they listen so blindly they see
Their words and their doctrine they all sound so true
The problem is Lord, they're all wrong about you!

I know my advocate waits upon high
My witness in heaven sees the tears that I cry
A true intercessor who will condescend
To plead with God as a man pleads for his friend

If I've been untrue, if I've robbed the poor
If I'm without guilt, what am I suffering for?
God would not crush me for some secret sin
And though he slay me still I'll trust in Him

I know now that my Redeemer's alive
He'll stand on the earth on the day he arrives
And though my body by then is no more
Yet in my flesh I know I'll see the Lord

Who is it who darkens my council
Who speaks empty words without knowledge?
Brace yourself up like a man
And answer me now if you can

Can you put on glory and splendor?
What's the way to the home of the light?
Does your voice sound like the thunder? Are you afraid?
Where were you when earth's foundations were laid?

Who gave the heart it's wisdom?
The mind it's desire to know? Can you bind the stars?
Raise your voice to the clouds?
Did you make the eagle proud?

Will the ox spend the night by your manger?
Did you let the wild donkey go free?
Can you take leviathan home as a pet?
If you merely touched him, you'd never forget

Who is it that darkens my council?
Who speaks empty words without knowledge?
Brace yourself up like a man
And answer me now if you can

I am unworthy, how can I reply?
There's nothing that you cannot do
You are the storm that calmed my soul
I place my hand over my mouth
I place my hand over my mouth

Wishing you joy in the journey,
