The Crimson Thread of Christmas – Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

“On December 31, 1961, W. A. Criswell, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX spent several hours walking his congregation through the Bible’s grand narrative, tracing the Scarlet Thread through the Bible.  Criswell repeated this journey on other occasions and added a significant amount of material. But it’s the original sermon from Criswell that was later transcribed and published.”

As I turn my heart and thoughts to Advent I am also focused on the fullness of time aspect of the incarnation.  I have always visualized this as the pinch in the hourglass.  Everything before led to the incarnation of Christ.  Everything that follows proceeds from this event.  I realize that not everyone agrees with this but it is what I believe.

The entirety of the Old Testament leads us to Bethlehem.  From Creation to the “silent period” each of the steps along the way shows us a crimson thread that weaves the tapestry of the manger.   It is one of the things that drive my faith forward.  It is one of the engines that powers my love for Christmas.

I will not attempt to recreate Criswell’s work.  I do wish to journey through the Old Testament and think through the many things the Father did to provide the Son.  It is this crimson thread of Christmas that I wish to follow.  I want to remember why the incarnation is so miraculous.  Without the incarnation there is no cross, no blood, and no resurrection.

Please walk with me and share your thoughts and questions.  Laugh at me when I get to sappy.  Cry with me when I am too emotional.  It is the crimson thread that weaves the story of Christmas and of our reclamation.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Mat 13:52 So Jesus said to them, "That is why every writer who has become a disciple of Christ’s rule of the universe is like a home owner. He liberally hands out new and old things from his great treasure store.”
