Ten Commandments – Murder

Greetings Dear Reader,

We inherently know that killing is wrong.  I think that we do not see just how much is packed into the simple word kill.  It is such a small word for such a powerful thing.

“Never murder.” (GW)

It is simple to say “do not murder.”  It is vast to control and assure that we live in a way that does not cause the death of others.  This first of the social commands that reach outside of the family puts to the forefront that life is sacred to God.  It is not enough to simply refrain from killing.  This is not a passive command.

“Never take life by premeditation, for greed, for vengeance, or as an assassin.” (ATT)

I am to see every life as sacred.  I am to be careful that those around me do not die because of inaction or I am guilty.  No matter the level of the violence I am not to be a part of it.  I am not to allow others to be harmed for the sake of any form of personal gain.

Ten Commandments – Your Parents

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is interesting to me that in commanding us how to live God moves from himself next to family.  Later, in Leviticus he will explain that honoring one’s parents is as important as keeping the Sabbath.  We see how important that is in the volume of time that is given to it.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live for a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (GW)

One must remember that the law is a teacher to show us our need for God.  Think of the depth to which our actions dishonor our family name.  Or even the things that children do that create fear and pain for their parents.

“Create admiration for your father and mother to prolong your life that Jehovah your God gives you on the earth.” (ATT)

God is not commanding us to accept everything our parents do but rather it is a continuation of the instruction concerning how we live our lives.  I must live in such a way that my parents can be proud of what I do.  That alone must create a timbre to the song I put out into the univers.
