Why I love Christmas – Old Songs

Happy Christmas Dear Reader,

It seems that as the popularity of Christmas grew so did the creation music to celebrate the season.  It is the hallowed music that I love the most.  There are a few songs that I hum all year long.  They contain the theology and spirit that I like to embrace throughout the season.

The fact is that singing and listening to these songs lifts my spirit.  They also serve as a shield from the stress and anxiety they try to invade the season each year.  The lyrics remind me of the reasons why I celebrate.  The love and hope reflected in Christmas songs help sustain me all year round.  For me there is not month in which they do not fit.

O Little Town of Bethlehem - Phillips Brooks – Performed by Sarah McLachlan

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Mat 13:52 So Jesus said to them, "That is why every writer who has become a disciple of Christ’s rule of the universe is like a home owner. He liberally hands out new and old things from his great treasure store."
