The Road – The Affairs of WIzards

Greetings Dear Reader,

In Georgia there is a town called Toccoa.  I had a brief happy life there.  I journey there to visit my brother in his new home and to reacquaint with some old friends.  I had hoped to meet with one friend in particular but he is called away to care for a flock recently bereaved of their shepherd.

When I lived in this place I lacked some to the wisdom the years have given me.  Instead of holding to Christ for all I needed I looked to other things and it was my downfall.  I was one of the wizards there.  I got to provide cousel, entertainment, and the odd adventure for others.  Alas I meddled in affairs I should not have.

My hope is to find some of myself that I left there in order to recapture what I can be.  I feel the first part of my journey has been a failure but I know I did my best.  I tried to help but one cannot control what others will do when given good choices.  My Grandfather, whose counsel I could sorely use, would say, “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.”

The second part of the journey is for me.  I need to choose wisely.  As I said, the one whose counsel I value is unavailable.  We will see what God provides.  I will see my younger Son, Bezel this morning and then off to the Lonely Mountain.  I will see my sisters Ivy and Echo later today.  It is in my siblings that I find my deepest connections.  That is something I have longed for all my life and it is growing.

My children are good counsel as well.  They ask me always to be the man I should be.  The heart of this journey is to steel myself to be the man I must be for this new chapter of my life.  So far I have found nothing external to sustain me.  Perhaps the there is something in valley called beautiful that I can carry with me.  Even if there is not I have found that I must follow this fitful fire wherever it leads.  For now that must be enough.

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away, ere break of day,
To seek our pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells,
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught,
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, on twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves,
And harps of gold, where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines were roaring on the heights,
The wind was moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread,
The trees like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale,
And men looked up with faces pale.
The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire,
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon.
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled the hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the Misty Mountains grim,
To dungeons deep and caverns dim,
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

The wind was on the withered heath,
But in the forest stirred no leaf:
There shadows lay be night or day,
And dark things silent crept beneath.

The wind came down from mountains cold,
And like a tide it roared and rolled.
The branches groaned, the forest moaned,
And leaves were laid upon the mould.

The wind went on from West to East;
All movement in the forest ceased.
But shrill and harsh across the marsh,
Its whistling voices were released.

The grasses hissed, their tassels bent,
The reeds were rattling--on it went.
O'er shaken pool under heavens cool,
Where racing clouds were torn and rent.

It passed the Lonely Mountain bare,
And swept above the dragon's lair:
There black and dark lay boulders stark,
And flying smoke was in the air.

It left the world and took its flight
Over the wide seas of the night.
The moon set sale upon the gale,
And stars were fanned to leaping light.

Under the Mountain dark and tall,
The King has come unto his hall!
His foe is dead, the Worm of Dread,
And ever so his foes shall fall!

The sword is sharp, the spear is long,
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong.
The heart is bold that looks on gold;
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

On silver necklaces they strung
The light of stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, from twisted wire
The melody of harps they wrung.

The mountain throne once more is freed!
O! Wandering folk, the summons heed!
Come haste! Come haste! Across the waste!
The king of friend and kin has need.

Now call we over the mountains cold,
'Come back unto the caverns old!'
Here at the gates the king awaits,
His hands are rich with gems and gold.

The king has come unto his hall
Under the Mountain dark and tall.
The Wyrm of Dread is slain and dead,
And ever so our foes shall fall!

Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away, ere break of day
Far over the wood and mountain tall.

To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell.
Through moor and waste we ride in haste,
And whither then we cannot tell.

With foes ahead, behind us dread,
Beneath the sky shall be our bed,
Until at last our toil be passed,
Our journey done, our errand sped.

We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day!

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Road – Merry Meet

Greetings Dear Reader,

One of the things I love about the road is meeting people both known and unknown.   I have stayed at the hotel I am in before and the front desk manager greeted me by name when I came into the lobby.

He not only remembered me but had my room key ready and assured that the internet signal was strong it the room I received.  I asked if they kept notes on guests and he said that he remembered I had troubles with the signal the last time I was here but I was so nice about it he wanted to assure that it did not recur.  It is a merry meeting when you reencounter a stranger to whom you have been kind.

Later today I will see family that I have not seen since last Thanksgiving.  It besieges my heart that I live so far away but it also true that where I live is much more to my liking.  I am still looking for my Rivendell where I can enjoy writing my tales and sitting in the evening with my pipe and mug.   I begin to lost hope that I will ever find it.

Seeing my family will still be a good thing.  I love them and wish we could be closer without me having to move.  It is an odd thing that I feel so isolated as sit in this room where strangers welcome me and no one knows me.  Avalon once said of a friend she loves that this person had to be taken in small doses.  After I met the friend I realized this was true.  I think it may be true of me as well.

I will also re-encounter family that does not know me well.  Nieces and nephews who do not know me will be my entertainment for a couple of days.  As I journey to the place of the Misty Mountains and the Lonely Mountain I identify more with the latter.

The meetings will be merry as will I be so.  The time will be brief.  I continue to wonder as I wander where I fit in under the naked stars.  Perhaps the journey will show me.  Even if it does not I will find the joy in it.

Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away ere break of day
Far over wood and mountain tall.
