Summer Celebrations ~ Fireworks

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have been privileged to see fireworks in some amazing places.  As a boy I got to see them at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium after a Braves game.  I have seen them on Stone Mountain with a laser light show.  If you can, you must see the ones and Disney World on the water.

It was amazing to watch my Sons and Grandsons see their first fireworks.  The line between awe and terror is very thin for wee lads.  The light show is amazing to me.  Every experience is unique.  The anticipation and then the climbing lights build until the finale.  It is a beautiful symphony of sound and color.

We are in a place in our history where we have forgotten how to set aside our differences long enough to celebrate that we are allowed to express them.  There are real and urgent problems but in exercising our civil liberties we have abandoned being civil and allowing others liberty.  We have forgotten how work together to form a more perfect union.  Our anger at injustices, real and perceived overrides our common sense and decency.

Perhaps we all need to watch the School House Rock videos again and recall the basics of our history.  I will treasure my freedom tonight as I watch fireworks with my family.   The privilege is not lost on me.  I will pray for those in need.  I will ask the Father to guide our leaders and give them his wisdom not their own.

I am thankful for the summer tradition of fireworks.  How about you Dear Reader?  Here is a link to the video I mentioned. Enjoy it as “We turn the sky into a birthday cake.”

Second Thoughts – Summer Singles

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

I am just coming off a perfect evening.  It was spent at a real baseball game with both my Sons and my Daughter.  The afternoon was sunny but cool.  The game was exciting and our team prevailed.

What was the best was watching my Children interact.  They laughed, shared stories, and enjoyed the game as well.  It was an oasis; a perfect moment.  I have learned to cherish these for what they are.  Jewels along the journey that are glimpses of what is to come.  Harmonies in the universal song that will one day be set right carry us to hope and anticipation.

I love my Children so deeply.  As I close this first day of July must will change before the boys of summer finishes their rounds.  We will gather for another game on Tuesday with more family and less interaction.  Together with each other will not be the focus.  The Grandson will.

For now, I will bask in the growing twilight as fireworks trace the sky and the American past time delivers once again.  My love of baseball is deeply connected to my love of family.  Take me out to a ballgame with family any time you want to remind me about God, freedom, and love.  Thank you Maxim, Bezel, and Christmas.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – For Love of the Game

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

I have always believed that except for injuries and some other serious issues it is proper to mostly leave God out of sports.  Primarily I think it is wrong to ask him to take sides.  In the excellent movie “For Love of the Game” the man character Billy Chapel, a pitcher prays.  “God, I always said I would never bother you about baseball, always seemed silly. But if you could make this pain in my shoulder stop for ten minutes”

When I was playing baseball I always left God out of it except to thank him when things went well or to pray for the safety of injured players.  Friday night whilst watching the game I involved God directly.  My friend, Dancing Rick, who had arranged for Orion to sing had a problem.  He came and discussed it with me.

You see it is summer and sunset is late and darkness later.   Darkness on July 3, 2015 was to arrive at 9:20. At 6:30 we were already in the sixth inning of the game.   Rick was concerned that the game would end early and that there was nothing for people to do.  He sole concern was not disappointing 6,500 baseball fans.  I prayed.

My prayer was simple; “Father the game needs to slow down.  Rick is concerned about his fans.”   It was then that God chose to remind me that he has a sense of humor.  My Mallards were ahead by two.  The Wood Chucks quickly tied the score and held on to take the game to extra innings.

Whilst the sun took its time traversing the sky from evening to dusk the teams battled back and forth.  I spent from the ninth to the twelfth innings laughing at God’s joke.  Rick got his time, we all got darkness, and my Mallards still won.   My Son, Daughter, and Grandson danced the time away until it was dark enough for the fireworks.

I was reminded well that God cares about everything.  I am not saying that my prayer caused the extra innings.  I am saying there are not coincidences.  I know that Rick is a man of faith.   I know the fireworks were amazing.  I know I was encouraged to help.  I know that my faith is stronger.

For the love of baseball and the fans I am thankful.  For the extra innings I am thankful and humored.  For the wonder in my Grandson’s eyes I feel younger.  For celebrating Independence Day at a baseball game I am touched.
