Second Thoughts ~ Missing Baseball

Greetings Dear Reader,

I realize that Baseball is not as important as oppression or the murder of the innocent.  I have not lost that perspective.  I do, however, feel that we must grieve all losses or they come back to hurt us.  Baseball has been a part of my summer, my legacy, and my faith for too many years for me go unscathed from its absence.

For those of you who feel the same, please enjoy this little distraction.   I have watched through Ken Burns’ documentary Baseball and then after each “Inning” have watched the movies associated with that era.  I am providing that list for you with little commentary.  The Inning descriptions are taken from Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy it.

1st Inning – Our Game
This inning serves as an introduction to the game and the series, and covers baseball's origins and the game as it evolved prior to the 20th century.

2nd Inning – Something Like A War
This inning covers approximately 1900 to 1910 and includes the formation of the American League and its integration with the National League, culminating in the establishment of the World Series, as well as the emergence of the game's first great star, Christy Mathewson, which helps to clean up baseball's image as a rowdy, brawling game. Ty Cobb is discussed in-depth (the title of this inning comes from one of his many quotes). Many of the quotes used in this inning and of the other early innings are taken from Lawrence S. Ritter's The Glory of Their Times.

Movie(s):

3rd Inning – The Faith of Fifty Million People
This inning covers approximately 1910 to 1920 and follows baseball as it goes through its greatest era of popularity yet. It heavily focuses on the Black Sox Scandal, taking its title from a line in the novel The Great Gatsby. The line refers to how easy it was for gamblers to tamper with the faith that people put in the game's fairness.

4th Inning – A National Heirloom
This inning covers approximately 1920 to 1930, and focuses on baseball's recovery from the Black Sox Scandal, giving much of the credit to the increase in power hitting throughout the game, led by its savior Babe Ruth. The title comes from what sportswriters called Ruth.

5th Inning – Shadow Ball
This inning covers approximately 1930 to 1940. A great deal of this inning covers the Negro Leagues, and the great players and organizers who were excluded from the Major Leagues. Also, the episode deals with organized Baseball's response to the Great Depression, as well as the sad decline of its most iconic star, Babe Ruth, and the emergence of new heroes, like Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg, and Joe DiMaggio.

Movie(s)

6th Inning – The National Pastime
This inning covers approximately 1940 to 1950. The emphasis here is on baseball finally becoming what it had always purported to be: a national game. As African-Americans are finally permitted for good into Major League Baseball, led by Jackie Robinson. This inning also looks at how the game responded to World War II and how the game became, more than ever, a symbol of America itself.

Movie(s)

7th Inning – The Capital of Baseball
This inning covers approximately 1950 to 1960. Burns emphasizes the greatness of the three teams based in New York (the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and Brooklyn Dodgers). This inning also covers one of baseball's golden eras and how America's own changes, such as leaving urban areas and heading west to more open suburbs, caused baseball to painfully follow.

Movie(s)

8th Inning – A Whole New Ballgame
This inning covers approximately 1960 to 1970. As the nation underwent turbulent changes, baseball was not immune, as Babe Ruth's beloved record of 60 home runs in a season is threatened by a sullen and complicated player, Roger Maris, and for the first time in decades, pitchers, led by stars Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson, dominate the game. The loss of home run power and betrayal to the game's past, combined with the meteoric rise of football, cause many to turn their back on baseball. Expansion and labor are major topics in this inning.

Movie(s)

9th Inning – Home
The final inning covers approximately 1970 to 1990. While baseball survived the 1960s, the changes were not over, and in some ways, its most bitter conflicts were just beginning. Major topics include the formation of the players' union, the owners' collusion, free agency, and drugs, as well as gambling, scandals. However, the game manages to win back the hearts of many with such moments as the excitement of the 1975 World Series and the return of the New York Yankees to dominance. The documentary ends with an ironic boast that baseball (and indirectly the World Series) had survived wars, depressions, pandemics, and numbers of scandals and thus could never be stopped. The 1994 World Series, the series to be played the year the film first aired on PBS, was canceled due to a players' strike. This marked the first time since 1904 that the World Series was not played.

Second Thoughts ~ Rounding Third

Greetings Dear Reader,

As August begins my mind always turns to baseball.  The All-Star break is over and the rush to the fall classic is in full sprint.  I daily measure the chances of my beloved Braves winning the division.  As of today, they are tied with the Phillies for first.  They have been at the top of the division all summer.

Thinking about this time of the season brings to mind the way in which I measure other passages of the year.  Summer is waning.  School begins in a month.  Pool time has an expiration date.  There will only be a few more days to enjoy the water and the sun.

As this time wanes each year I look forward to the autumn and the changes that come with it.  I find beauty in the seasons.  I like living where all four of them exist distinctly.  Those complaining about the humidity and heat today will be complaining about the cold and snow in January.

I must move forward with the seasons.  I cannot chase summer around the world or live where the seasons do not matter.  I need to see my life reflected in the seasons and understand the cyclical lessons that they teach.  In finding the truth of the seasons I understand the need to carry on.

That is what keeps my faith where it should be; focused on the rolling days ahead.  The seasons will not wait for me and I must follow them.  My life will whether I wish it or not.  As the summer rounds third and heads toward autumn so does my life.  I can feel that I am past the summer of my journey.  I hope I have many miles to go but I had best have a light jacket handy.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Summer Celebrations ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Yesterday at the pool I heard a lad say that summer would last forever.  I remember when it seemed that way to me.  I even have a friend who lives his life chasing summer.  There is just something about the sun and warmth that calls us.

I love the ways we celebrate the summer.  There are still festivals and long days ahead.  The days, however, have already begun to grow shorter.  The light will wane as the good ship Earth continues its journey around the sun.

There are things I hope to do before I run out of summers.  There are places I want to see when it is warm.  I want to see a few more Braves’ games.  I long to spend more time in, on, and under the water.  Family beach vacations are one of my favorites of all things.

There is so much beauty in the world to take in and enjoy.  We are given so much that is free if you just get there.  The celebrations of summer are an enticement to see the world.  I find so many reasons to love the Creator in it.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Summer Celebrations ~ Baseball

Greetings Dear Reader,

I understand that not all of you enjoy baseball.  I care about this and hope that someone starts a support group for this deficit in your life.  I, however, love it.  I do so in balance most of the time.

Yesterday I was out of balance.  I sat through oppressive heat and humidity to watch my team lose badly.  I was primarily there to watch my Grandsons sing the Seventh Inning Stretch.  Brats (the sausage, not a negative reference to my Grandsons), burgers, and beer helped ease the torpid weather.  My love of baseball did the rest.

This is a good baseball year thus far.  Both my beloved Braves and the local Mallards are doing well.  I have not attended many hot humid games since I was a boy in Atlanta.  Then I was acclimated to it; not so now.

Still I find such beauty and grace in the sport.  No one is trying to physically harm anyone.  The competition is honest and changes daily.  Every single moment of the game can change the momentum and outcome.  There is always hope until the last out.  I have seen a team, down by 14 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning rally and win.  There is always hope.

We need hope.  We increasingly need more if it daily as the world around us grows dark.  From April to October I take in the daily reminder of hope provided by baseball.  I see that every pitch carries opportunity just as every moment does in our lives.  Those who find the game boring have not seen past the activity to the beauty of its philosophy.

You can catch a bit of this philosophy in the chapter “The Mound” in Sheetrock on the Road.  For now, I will say that this summer celebration of potential still has much to teach me about faith and following Christ.  Feel free ask to me more about both Dear Reader.

Summer Celebrations ~ Fireworks

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have been privileged to see fireworks in some amazing places.  As a boy I got to see them at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium after a Braves game.  I have seen them on Stone Mountain with a laser light show.  If you can, you must see the ones and Disney World on the water.

It was amazing to watch my Sons and Grandsons see their first fireworks.  The line between awe and terror is very thin for wee lads.  The light show is amazing to me.  Every experience is unique.  The anticipation and then the climbing lights build until the finale.  It is a beautiful symphony of sound and color.

We are in a place in our history where we have forgotten how to set aside our differences long enough to celebrate that we are allowed to express them.  There are real and urgent problems but in exercising our civil liberties we have abandoned being civil and allowing others liberty.  We have forgotten how work together to form a more perfect union.  Our anger at injustices, real and perceived overrides our common sense and decency.

Perhaps we all need to watch the School House Rock videos again and recall the basics of our history.  I will treasure my freedom tonight as I watch fireworks with my family.   The privilege is not lost on me.  I will pray for those in need.  I will ask the Father to guide our leaders and give them his wisdom not their own.

I am thankful for the summer tradition of fireworks.  How about you Dear Reader?  Here is a link to the video I mentioned. Enjoy it as “We turn the sky into a birthday cake.”

Summer Celebrations ~ Farmer’s Markets and Vegetable Stands

Greetings Dear Reader,

I do not think that the farmer’s markets of my youth exist in this part of the world any longer.  If you want a glimpse of one there is a chapter about it in Sheetrock on the Road.  We have farmer’s markets now but they are more commercial and less rustic.

There are semi-permanent vegetable stands around the city and a twice weekly farmer’s market downtown.  One can find real roadside fruit and vegetable stands not too far outside the city.  The bounty of living in such rich farming country delights me.

It used to be that we counted on the land around us to sustain us.  The work of growing and preserving was vital to survival.  We have turned that into a system of preservation and import that is far removed from farmer and field.  We do not see as much connection between the earth and our lives as we should.

When I purchased fresh tomatoes and cucumbers for our salad last week from a vegetable truck the vendor explained to me the farmers who provide him with his stock.  He talked of the soil and history of the seeds that grew the plants.  As I enjoyed the salad and sandwiches that came from my farm-fresh vegetables I remembered my Grandfather’s farm and garden.

One of our summer celebrations is the abundance of the earth in fresh vibrant food.  It causes me to remember some wonderful family times with my Grandfather and my Sons.  It teaches me to count the blessing in every piece of fresh fruit.  I will repeat the freshness process for dinner with my family this week.  I will renew my gratitude and increase my celebration of the warm days where light is turned to food.  How about you Dear Reader?  What is your celebration of fresh food?

Spanish Pipedream – John Prine

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the juke box broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve
Well, she danced around the bar room and she did the hoochy-coo
Yeah she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do

Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

Well, I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
When just as I was leavin', well she looked me in the face
I said "you must know the answer."
"she said, "no but I'll give it a try."
And to this very day we've been livin' our way
And here is the reason why

We blew up our TV threw away our paper
Went to the country, built us a home
Had a lot of children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own

Summer Celebrations ~ In and On Water

Greetings Dear Reader,

I know that some of the most peaceful moments in my life have been when I was in or on the water. I recall moments as a teen when I spent weeks swimming or scuba diving.  My mind clears and the feeling of connectedness to all creation washes over me.

It is always a surprise to me that even in July the pool where I live is still chilly.  Still I am amazed at how many people flock to the water once summer arrives.  Since there are five large lakes within easy driving distance once sees boats and other watercraft every weekend.

We join in this cacophony of corporate worship of the sun and water.  We squeeze as much as we can out of the warm leisure days.  I swim and soak in the sun.  My solitary swims serve as exercise and meditation.  The repetition of strokes and laps create a rhythm that becomes peaceful and restorative.

One of the celebrations of summer is the re-creation of ourselves into people of the water.  We find one of those intangible benefits there that becomes addictive and, in most cases, good for us.  I have seen so many clear reminders of the beauty of creation in and on the water.

I celebrate the water and the life it supports.  I find it beautiful and amazing.  I miss living on a beach and an almost daily visit to the ocean.  I am thankful for the beauty and awe of some things I have seen.  The mystery of some of it still intrigues me.

Listen to the Song of the Sea.  Perhaps you can find something to call you there as well.  “I was born in the sign of water, and it is there that I feel my best.”  How about you Dear Reader?

Song of the Sea – Dan Fogelberg

Broken clouds along the blue horizon
The sun is setting and the wind is dying down
Outward bound, there is music all around
Can you hear it, it's the song of the sea

Soundings taken at the edge of darkness
The widest silences the heart can ever hear
You can steer to the stars along your lee
Set you bearings to the, the song of the sea

Oh and the song is as ancient as the days
And the winds upon the waves
Let it carry you away, so far away

Trim my sails to greet the breaking morning
Past the headlands to the rolling open sea
And it comes to me, I have never felt so free
As when I'm listening to the, the song of the sea

Oh and the song is as ancient as the days
And the winds upon the waves
Let it carry me away, so far away

Some were meant to watch the world from windows
And never look beyond the road beneath their feet
But for me, I was always meant to be
One forever chasing the song of the sea
The song of the sea
The song of the sea

Summer Celebrations ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

As we endure heat this weekend that reminds me too much of my youthful summers, I am reminded of the many things we celebrate during the warmer months.  With the time between Memorial Day and Independence Day being the run up to full swing of summer I see increasing thoughts of vacations and warm water from my friends.

It makes me wonder what drives us to celebrate so many things in the warm months.  It also reminds me that half the planet is in winter.  Their beach time and picnic weather are over for a season.  We could find as many ways to celebrate in the cold but much of it would be indoors.

There is something that calls us to the outside.  As our civilizations spread from the equatorial regions it became necessary to spend more time indoors and finding warmth.  We have been connected to the outdoor world since the beginning.

I want to look at some of the things we celebrate and hope to find a key to that connection that helps me better understand what the Creator has in mind regarding this.  This riddle of yearning for the outdoors but also needing to avoid harmful weather intrigues me.  It pushes me to learn where the harmony is for the sake of following Christ.

I would treasure your company in this journey Dear Reader.  If it gets too warm I will make some of my Grandmother’s Sweet Tea.  We can rest in the Calliandra shade and cool down until time for us to walk again.  Help me examine the riddle.  I am sure there are many good answers.

There was a man back in '95
Whose heart ran out of summers
But before he died, I asked him

Wait, what's the sense in life
Come over me, Come over me

He said, Son why you got to sing that tune
Catch a Dylan song or some eclipse of the moon
Let an angel swinging and make you swoon
Then you will see... You will see

Then he said,
Here's a riddle for you
Find the Answer
There's a reason for the world: You and I...

Picked up my kid from school today
Did you learn anything cause in the world today
You can't live in a castle far away
Now talk to me, come talk to me

He said,
Dad I'm big but we're smaller than small
In the scheme of things, well we're nothing at all
Still every mother's child sings a lonely song
So play with me, come play with me

And Hey Dad
Here's a riddle for you
Find the Answer
There's a reason for the world, you, and I...

I said,
Son for all I've told you
When you get right down to the
Reason for the world...Who am I?

There are secrets that we still have left to find
There have been mysteries from the beginning of time
There are answers we're not wise enough to see
He said... You’re looking for a clue; I Love You free...

The batter swings and the summer flies
As I look into my angel's eyes
A song plays on while the moon is hiding over me
Something comes over me

I guess we're big and I guess we're small
If you think about it man you know we got it all
Cause we're all we got on this bouncing ball
And I love you free
I love you freely

Here's a riddle for you
Find the Answer
There's a reason for the world: You and I...

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Bat Dog and Other Considerations

Greetings Dear Reader,

Even if you do not like baseball, stay with me Dear Reader.  There is something here for you. I promise.

Last night I was privileged to host my friends Jeff and Ruby at a Mallards baseball game.  This is a summer league for college students who have a real shot at playing professional baseball.  It may be some of the best baseball out there.  One can read about this kind of league in The Last Best League by Jim Collins.

Even though my Mallards lost I got to spend a pure baseball evening with friends.  True to tradition the play was good, there were entertaining asides, and the food was excellent.  It was a humid summer evening that reminded me of Braves games as a youth with my Grandfather.  The breeze that had all of the flags standing to did not reach down into the seats to offer any release from the cloying damp air.  One might better understand the torpor that besieges Southerners in summer.

One of the entertainments for the night was a dog that retrieved the bats for the Mallards after each hit (video by Jeff).  As soon as play halted he would rush out, grab the back like a stick, and run it back to the dugout.  It made me wonder what he would do should the bat be broken.  We speculated that it might be a two-trip deal.  We also pondered how it made the batter feel when he would fly out and people were applauding the dog as the batter made his way to the dugout.

As the game drew to a close the wind shifted in a way that I recall often from my youth.  A refreshing cool breeze turned the flags to flying in the opposite direction.  To the puerile this may have seemed like a boon.  It was a lulling portent to the experienced.  Before the first distant flash of lightning, I knew that heavy rain was on its way.

The gamed ended and my friends wisely made their way to the parking lot.  The walk to my car was quite a way.  Still I observed a tradition that I have after every baseball game that I attend.  For the first time, however, I revealed this sacred moment to someone.  I explained to my friend Jeff that I was going to spend a minute with my Grandfather before departing.

I took a moment as the impending storm built to pray and thank the Father for my Grandfather and the influence he has in my life.  As I mentioned earlier this week, he would have turned 108 on the 12th.   His love of God and baseball turned those shared experiences at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium into sacred times for me when I was a boy.

We would often have to hurry to the car as a summer thunderstorm approached after a game.  Back then the Braves usually lost.  The conjunction of the humidity, the storm, the loss, and the time with friends last night made the moment echo those boyhood memories in a special way.

It reminded me that any space is sacred when the heart is turned to gratitude and love.  It put me in mind that those summer nights long ago spent in section 101, row 1, seats 1 and 2 with my Grandfather was one of the best classrooms I ever visited.  Last night in section 107, row 6, seats 1 through 4 I experienced a sacred time with good friends.

The conversation afterwards with the Father and my Grandfather was all about gratitude and love.  Both the past and the present baseball moments were things for which I am grateful.  The essence of it all reminds that the joy in the journey is found by seeing the sacred part of every moment whether it be friends, bat dog, or the weather.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Batter Swings and the Summer Flies – Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

The world is working its way to gray.  The sun rises a little later every morning.  The memories of this summer will long linger for me.  The trip to the ocean was great.  The Disney trip was magical for my Daughter.  I shared some great times at the pool with my Grandsons and Son.

The pool is closed and has a covering of Locust leaves.  The water is too cold for swimming now anyway.  The last week of September will be swallowed by the wind.  Before long my windows will be decorated by morning frost.  The world will move towards the closing of the year.

Some of the classics of Autumn are on the horizon.  My Son mentioned apple picking and pie making.  My local grocer is already featuring cranberry sauce and bread crumbs.  Those moments of crisp clean air will surprise me with deep breaths and the feeling of being energized by cold.

The seasons move in their courses without regard to our wish for another swim, another campout, or another inning.  The year seems to have slipped by so quickly as we usher in its last quarter.  As life moves on with the seasons I can look back on the memories of summer and look forward to the next one.

More importantly what I must do is embrace and cherish the moments.  I must take the time to enjoy every fiery maple leaf and brisk breeze.  I must remember the needs of others as the world grows colder.  I must see my life reflected in the seasons.  I must find Christ in the moments and follow.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Batter Swings and the Summer Flies – Harvest Home

Greetings Dear Reader,

Yesterday I was privileged to show our local farmer’s market to a couple of friends.  One can tell that the true harvest has begun. It seems everyone has zucchinis the size of a space station.  Giant Kohlrabi is in fashion as well.

There are vegetables and flowers available in so many varieties.  I tried a Hush Cherry for the first time.  It was quite delightful.  The honey kiosks were crowded with bees that seemed to be demanding the return of their hard won nectar.

The visit with my friends was fun. It also put me in mind of how much abundance we have.  It is good to celebrate he harvest but only if we also give an eye the hungry homeless who sleep in that same space after the market is over.

I pondered as I walked the square the difference it would make if everyone attending donated a small amount to Second Harvest.  How many micro-moves could be made to make a macro difference?

As the harvest is gathered hunger will remain.  When the snow and wind clear the sidewalks around the capitol the homeless will still be there.  Their needs will be the same.  Those in our town with hunger challenges can get help but even our town does not do enough.

I have found some ways to increase my ability to make a difference.  I hope you can do so as well Dear Reader.  It is not my place to dictate but I am free to hope.

Come, ye thankful people, come
Raise the song of harvest home
All is safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin
God our Maker doth provide
For our wants to be supplied
Come to God's own temple, come
Raise the song of harvest home

All the world is God's own field
Fruit unto His praise to yield
Wheat and tares together sown
Unto joy or sorrow grown
First the blade and then the ear
Then the full corn shall appear
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be

For the Lord our God shall come
And shall take His harvest home
From His field shall in that day
All offenses purge away
Giving angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast
But the fruitful ears to store
In His garner evermore

Even so, Lord, quickly come
Bring Thy final harvest home
Gather Thou Thy people in
Free from sorrow, free from sin
There, forever purified
In Thy garner to abide
Come, with all Thine angels come
Raise the glorious harvest home

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

The Batter Swings and the Summer Flies – Pumpkin Spice Everything

Greetings Dear Reader,

Over the last few years the norm has become that the advent of Autumn turns everything pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg flavored.  The Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spiced Latte’ (PSL) leads the charge.  Whilst I enjoy them they are really just an over priced caffeinated hot milkshake.

It used to be that the fall would yield the odd homemade pumpkin bread.  I am always willing to have a piece of pumpkin pie.  Some of the products that have adopted the pumpkin spice are understandable.  Others seems a little absurd.

The idea of IHOP making pumpkin pancakes I get.  Twinkies have been flavored with chocolate and key lime so pumpkin makes sense.  I have make homemade pumpkin cream cheese.  Oreos get flavored with everything but the pumpkin ones are a keeper.

I guess that M&M’s and Skittles are not too far afield.  Pumpkin spiced toothpaste seems absurd.  I have had pumpkin wine and beer and likely will not again.  Pumpkin spiced margarine seems like a big tub of mistake.

We try to inject what we like into everything.  Business tries to capitalize on the popularity of a flavor to make profit.  We obsess over something to feel good.  The combination of the two is how we end up with pumpkin spiced vodka, tacos, and antacids.

It is our nature to do the ridiculous with what we like.  It is our obsession that drives us.  We do the same thing with our relationship to Christ.  We try to Jesus Christ latte’ everything.  We make bracelets, t-shirts, and tattoos that proclaim our obsession.  The problem is that no matter how we wear it on the outside it does not matter unless it is on the inside.

There is a crisp bright beauty to the spice and flavor of Autumn.  The genuine thing is refreshing and alive.  It is in following Christ with our hearts that we find the genuine thing.  We do not need to force him into everything.  He will permeate it all if we simple follow and love.  I will find him everywhere I look for him.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Mat 13:52 So Jesus said to them, "That is why every writer who has become a disciple of Christ’s rule of the universe is like a home owner. He liberally hands out new and old things from his great treasure store.”
