Second Thoughts ~ New Year’s Eve 2019

Greetings Dear Reader,

As I write my last BLOG post for the decade, I have looked into what this venue brings me.  Since 2013, I have not missed posting at least once per day.  My goal for the last five years has been 400 posts or better per year just to be sure.

The primary value for me is that it keeps me pushing forward in my attempt to follow Christ.  Some have seen my efforts as focusing on my self or venting my spleen.  My daily goal is to wrestle with the things that keep me from following Christ with all that I am.  I share this with you Dear Reader so that you may find questions of your own or benefit from my failures and victories.  The themes and series which I present always have the underlying desire to follow Christ in all that I do.

The next year holds two new literary works to be published, Thoughts and Questions on Galatians and Magi: The Gift Bearers.  The former will premiere in the Spring and the latter in Autumn before Christmas.   I will also keep my goal regarding daily BLOG posts and my commitment to daily writing in both areas.  It is my calling to write and so, I do not wish to skip a day doing it.

The other things that I hope to accomplish this coming year are to complete Project Tortoiseshell and to become independent of anything save my writing for income.  To do this I need to sell 10,000 books per year in any combination of any of my titles.

I have so much to be thankful for as I close this year.  The Father has provided for me and I have been blessed to be allowed to help others. The need to write is ever-present.  So is the desire to be of help to others.  Several times this past year the Spirit has taken me to the right place at the proper time so that I could be of help to people who do not know me.  It is a beautiful serendipitous moment when this occurs.

I invite you to stay with me through the next year and to bring some friends along.  Please share my BLOG when you enjoy it.  Please buy my books when you are looking for something to do or if you have someone else to celebrate.  I am willing to travel to speak at your functions, meetings, or events.  My prices are modest and I promise to engage and entertain your folks.

It has been a good year filled with blessings.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts and questions as we journey ever onward.  Perhaps next year we can celebrate together.

Ever On – Dan Fogelberg

May the trail rise up to meet you
May your heart rejoice in song
May the skies be fair above you
As you journey ever on
Ever on--ever on
Ever on--ever on

And in this planetary circle
We are but a single stone
Spinning on our fragile axis
Through the endless night along
Ever on--ever on

May your love be there to guide us
May it always keep us strong
May we walk within your footsteps
As you lead us ever on
Ever on--ever on

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Closing of the Year – At Least I Bring You Hope

Greetings Dear Reader,

On this last day of 2015 I celebrate and anticipate.  My new book, Sheetrock On the Road is out.  My Grandsons seem to be enjoying their Christmas gifts.  I still have a few days of vacation left.

All that has passed this year is just that.  It has passed.  Some of my losses have been small and negligible.  Others go to the center of who I am.  I lost a dear friend suddenly yesterday.  He was a good man and I will write more about him later after the dust settles.

There have also been many blessings in the year.  I have done well at some of my goals and completed some projects that I listed last January.  I realize that in my major goal of showing the love of Christ to everyone I am improving but still have a great distance to travel.

What I must constantly deal in is hope.  I cannot always comfort others.  I cannot always explain how life unfolds as it does for anyone including myself.  I can deal in hope.  I can assure others that I journey with them and there is a way out of the darkness.

I must work harder to push the echoes of the Christmas bells further into the New Year.  I must count the blessings that I have.  I will seek to follow Christ more closely and hone my heart in love, mercy, kindness, and grace.  In this will I sustain my hope and share it with others.

As a final note for this year, I want you to know how much of a blessing you are Dear Reader.  I love and treasure you.  I leave you with this amazing piece of must to remind you that you matter.  If you find your hope wavering feel free to let me know.  I will try to help mend it.  Lori, please sing along with me.  The rest of you are welcome as well.

Closing of the Year – Wendy and Lisa

If I cannot bring you comfort
Then at least I bring you hope
For nothing is more precious
Than the time we have, and so

We all must learn from small misfortunes
Count the blessings that are real
Let the Bells ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year

Let the Bells Ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year

Up on the knees of a Sergeant Major
Ride through the woods with the wind in your hair
Silver bells on a golden reindeer
As they race to the castle over there

If I cannot bring you comfort then at least I bring you hope

Now all the winter bells are ringing
Hear them echo through the snow
And the children’s' voices singing
On the streets so far below

This is a time to be together
And the truth is somewhere here
Within our love of people
At the closing of the year

We'll walk in the sun
With all of the faith
And all of the Patience
All of the way
With all of us right
And all of us saying
"No one an island"
We'll fly in the arms of time
Walk in the waves, never fall
Don't fall.....

At the closing of the year...
At the closing of the year!
If I cannot bring you comfort, then at least I bring you hope
Then at least I bring you hope.....

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Closing of the Year – Sometimes You Get to be Santa

Greetings Dear Reader,

As I close out my celebration of the actual Christmas season I will leave you with this story.  It is true.  It is one of my fondest Christmas memories.  Please share your thoughts with me Dear Reader…

For a few years, when I was younger, I got to be a professional Santa Clause.  I was hired by a city as their official Santa to come to parties, appear in the Thanksgiving parade, enjoy spreading cheer for children of all ages.  I also held audience for children at the city park.  I and my two hired elves would appear every evening at the city’s giant sled from six o’clock until nine o’clock to welcome children who wanted to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.

The children would line up and my elves would assist them up onto the sled.  It was a very busy time with children showing up no matter how chilly or drizzly the weather became.  Both of my elves were college girls who wanted the paycheck but did not get the importance of what we were doing.  They would do the job well but at any lull the two suggested that we stop early or take a break.

Christmas Eve arrived, my last night at the sleigh, with the steady drizzle and the temperature hovering around forty five degrees.  My elves informed me upon arrival that they were anxious for nine o’clock to arrive so that they could go to a Christmas party a friend was hosting.  We were very busy from six until eight as children from several nearby churches convinced their parents to bring them to see Santa after Christmas Eve services.  By eight o’clock the streets were empty.

Both girls wanted to quit early and used an invitation to their party to tempt me.  I reminded them that we had an obligation to the city and any child who showed up during the next hour.  They pouted and shivered and we waited.   They asked again after half an hour had passed if they could go, assuring me that no one was coming.  At eight-forty, just as the drizzle turned into real rain, an old station wagon pulled into the parking lot adjacent to the sleigh.

A woman and a child got out of the car and made their way toward the pavilion housing one sleigh, a vindicated Santa, and two obviously disappointed elves.  The woman and child hurried through the rain stopping just under the pavilion but outside of the circle of light cast by the lamps on the sleigh.  The mother bent over to speak to the child for a moment, all I could catch was an excited, “Yes I am sure,” from the child.

The mother made her way to the sleigh while the child waited outside of the circle of light.  Hesitantly she mounted the steps and informed Christine, the blond elf that she needed to speak to “Santa” privately.  Christine motioned her forward and I assumed my jolliest demeanor for a concerned parent.   Her concern was well founded as she faced rejection to protect her child.

“Santa,” she began, “my daughter, Amanda, insisted that we come to see you.  We live just down the street and she has been watching you for the last two weeks every evening.  I have put her off but she has become desperate and I do not want to disappoint her at Christmas.  We waited until it seemed everyone else had gone.”
I heard the concern in her voice but had not yet caught the full impact of her fear.  “Of course I wish to see your little girl.” I assured her, “Santa loves all children.”

“That is nice,” she said, almost angrily, “but you do not understand.  Early this fall there was a fire.  My daughter was badly burned on her face, chest, and arms.  It is very unpleasant to look at and her mask, to help heal the facial tissues is quite alarming.”
She hurried on, afraid that she could not finish.  “If you do not wish to see her I will understand.  I will explain and she is quite bright so she will understand.”  Her words allowed me a way out of the unpleasantness but her heart was begging me not to reject her daughter.

I leaned toward her from my Santa’s throne, ready to dispense Christmas kindness without hesitation.  “You send Amanda to see me.  I can handle it and she will get her wish.”

Tears came to the mother’s eyes as she turned back toward her daughter. She went back outside of the circle of lantern light and bent over to speak with the girl.  All I could make out was an insistent, “But Mom, I want to talk to him alone.”

The mother nodded.  Without the slightest pause the little girl rushed forward.  Angie, my red haired elf involuntarily gasped as Amanda approached and then turned away, more embarrassed at her response than troubled by what she saw.
Amanda climbed the stairs and rushed over to me.  Except for the bandages, scar tissue, and leather mask, she was no different from any other six year old who plopped down on my lap.  She looked up at me, wonder in her lash-less eyes, and belief in her heart.

I greeted her, “Hello Amanda.  What can Santa give you for Christmas this year?”
She looked deep into my eyes and asked for the one thing she truly wanted.  “Santa, my mom has been so sad since I got burned.  She thinks it was her fault but the doctor and the fireman both said it was not.  Please Santa, make my mom happy again.  You do not have to bring me any toys or candy.  I just want my old mom back.”

She stopped talking and waited.  She waited for what every child longs to hear when they are on Santa’s lap and really believe.  She wanted me to say “Yes.”
Not wishing to deceive her, I hedged.  “Amanda, you seem like a very good girl.  I will see what I can do.  Now, send you mom back here to talk to Santa.”

Through the burned skin around her eyes shown to bright green orbs filled with hope and determination.  I believed that Amanda would not carry many internal scars from her ordeal.  Her mom made her way hesitantly back to the sleigh.  She started to thank me and I waved her silent.  She then asked the right question, “What did Amanda say she wanted?  I hope it is something small as we have little enough after the fire.”
I smiled broadly, “I assure you that you can afford Amanda’s gift and you still have time to get it.”

For the first time I saw the hint of a smile on the face of the mother so I continued.  “Amanda wants her mother to be happy and stop thinking that the fire was her fault.   She wants you to stop blaming yourself.  If you give her that you will grant her Christmas wish.”

Tears ran down the mother’s face as I saw her resolve to abandon the guilt she felt.  She whispered a thank you and turned back to her daughter.  Just as she moved outside of the sleigh light, but before the rain drowned out their voices, I heard the mother say to Amanda, “You are right Amanda; the fire was not my fault.”

Amanda stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me.  The damp air carried her small voice back to me so clearly.  “Thank you Santa.”  It was my turn to cry as I pondered on the giving spirit of a little girl who had every reason to be unhappy.

Closing of the Year – Putting Away Christmas

Greetings Dear Reader,

I will be taking down the tree and most of the decorations this week.  It always saddens me to do so.  I leave something of Christmas up throughout the year.  There is the small nativity on my desk.  The ghostly Santa face in a light keeps my writing space lit.  The Blue Nativity is in my bed room and there are always Christmas dishes in the cupboard.

I put away the trappings for Christmas because they are not common to me.  The bringing out and decorating each year is an act of worship.  Their absence is an exercise in keeping the attitude, spirit, and joy without the devices.

My love of Christmas is seeded in the celebration of Christ.  I close the year with the acting out of that celebration but strive to live it out all year long.  I find great joy in being a source of hope and peace to others whenever I can.

I miss the bubble lights but want to always reflect the Light of the World.  I miss the special events but want celebrating Christ and his incarnation to be a daily thought.  I still play the music in my place and car when the mood strikes.

The stores are busily moving Christmas to the clearance isle.  Joy and Peace are marked down to 50%.  Good will toward men seems tucked away until next fall.  The bells grow silent and the deep mid-winter is upon us.  Not, however, for me.

I am really one of those who thinks “It is only 361 days until Christmas”.  I think of the celebration of the incarnation every day.  I see the year as a cycle of reminders of the story of redemption.  From December to December I attempt to find a moment each day where I can live the spirit of Christmas with my fellow humans.  I will put away the decorations but never put away Christ.  How about you Dear Reader?

In the Bleak Midwinter – Sarah McLachlan

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter, long ago

Angels and archangels may have gathered there
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss

Oh what can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part
Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart

In the bleak midwinter, frosty winds made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part
Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart

Closing of the Year – Remembrances and Reminders

Greetings Dear Reader,

This has been a harder year than most.  There are some that have been harder.  I do not wish to sound like I am complaining.  The blessings still outweigh the pain but in reviewing the year I must acknowledge the pain.

After living alone for a third of the year I know that I hate it.  I make the most of it and do my best to learn from it.  I use some of the time to reach out to others in need and that provides some solace.

It is the close of the day that is hard.  It is falling asleep alone that reveals the fears I have carried since childhood.  It drives me to the Father for comfort which is good.  It reminds me that it is not good for man to be alone.

I also remember some great moments that calm me.  I have done better this year at giving from the heart to the needs of others.  I am learning to listen to needs over words and that is precious to me.  I know that I am gifted at this and want to hone it to the benefit of others….

The Father is teaching me just how deeply mercy and grace can go in the life of another.   In choosing love over restitution I find that love grows deeper.  In choosing forgiveness over compensation I find that I am richer.  In choosing faith over what I see in front of me I am learning to follow more closely.

As I assess the year I find that I have learned.  I also find that I have more to learn.  I will stay put until I do so.  I will become more like that imagery that John gives of one driven by the Spirit.  I will hold the love the Father has told me to take up without hesitation.  It is his responsibility to heal me from the cost.

I have a tag given my by my dear friend Katie.  It simply says "Journey".   It reminds me that all of this is temporary and that I am headed somewhere.  What matters is how I journey.  What counts is what I leave in my path.  My guide is Christ and I must follow always.  I must not take anything here as permanent.  I must give all that I can to enhance the journeys of others.  I carry this tag always to remind me to journey; to follow.

I will follow in faith.  I will take the bitter with the sweet and learn from both.  I will endeavor to give more than I take.    After all as the year closes I am closer to home and want to be more prepared for the reunion.

Joy in the Journey – Michael Card

There is a joy in the journey
There's a light we can love on the way
There is a wonder and wildness to life
And freedom for those who obey

And all those who seek it shall find it
A pardon for all who believe
Hope for the hopeless and sight for the blind

To all who've been born of the Spirit
And who share incarnation with Him
Who belong to eternity stranded in time
And weary of struggling with sin

Forget not the hope that's before you
And never stop counting the cost
Remember the hopelessness when you were lost

There is a joy in the journey
There's a light we can love on the way
There is a wonder and wildness to life
And freedom for those who obey

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Closing of the Year – Three French Hens

Greetings Dear Reader,

On this “third day of Christmas” I find that I am reminded that the seasonal silly song once had real meaning.  There was a time in England that it was illegal to be Catholic.  The “Twelve Days of Christmas” is code for articles of faith.

Today, the third day of Christmas is “Three French Hens” or Faith, Hope, and Charity.  These are the things that hold my on course.  They are the things I hope to bring to bear on all that I do.

I want to walk, live, and act in faith.  My faith must be living and real in all that I do and visible to others.  I do not mean that I speak about it all the time but that others know by my actions why I do what I do and that I believe.

Hope is the thing I want others to find because of my faith.  There is real hope to be had.  Even when the rain is cold and the darkness deep there is always hope.  Even when I feel it waning my faith sustains it.

It is only through charity, or love that we can do anything.  My love for others must be what people see.  My desire to live this love out with everyone I encounter must be my mission.

These three French hens are known as the theological virtues.  Imagine if focused on these three things in all our theology.  We could truly make a difference in the world.  Our message would be worth hearing.  Our example would be worth following.  We could truly extend the celebration of Christ beyond the 12 days.

1 Partridge in a Pear Tree – Jesus on the Cross
2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping = the Ten Commandments
11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed

Closing of the Year – Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

I love having this time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve to assess the closing year and make some plans for the coming one.  I do not make resolutions but I plan my writing, assess areas where I need to grow and develop, and get started on the Christmas that is still a year away.

I try to always take vacation time during this week.  I spend it with friends where possible, writing, and planning.   I look for ways to be kinder and more loving in my actions. Consideration is given to how I may be more appreciative of what I have and what I need to diminish in my life.

I ponder the needs of those with whom I interact in social and business circles.  I begin on Boxing Day by pondering the clerks and servers who attend me in various venues.  I look for new ways to show them appreciation, support, and respect.  I do not relate this for my own benefit but in hopes that you will be encouraged to do the same Dear Reader.

This day is a day to remember those who serve.  It is a day to think about the Feast of Stephen and to be good to those who use their lives to enrich ours.  The servers and clerks of the world often work when we revel.  They miss holidays with their families so that we can enjoy them with ours.  I use this day to remember how much they deserve our gratitude (and gratuity) and respect.

One of the ways I work at following Christ more closely is in regards to those who serve the public.  Whether this is a vocation for life or the place of sojourning on the way to another life it is hard work with more complaint than gratitude.  I will purpose to show gratitude for this.  I want them to remember being valued and appreciated.  I want the day to be a little lighter for having served me.  It takes intention.  It is worth the effort.

Good King Wenceslas – Kemper Crabb

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

"Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing
