Second Thoughts – And the Southern Cross – Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail; it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested;
Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you.
And the Southern Cross.

We do that to each other.  We cheat, lie, and test.   We fail because it is easy.  We take and break solemn vows to God.  We do not love when we should.  We give up on love when we should hold on a little longer.

I have failed at love because I would not keep trying.  I have failed at it because I wanted my own needs met.  It is what we do.  It is our baser nature to fail when we don’t get what we want.  This is not the essence of love.

We encourage people to leave and move on to “better” things.  We support people in rejecting love they have vowed to sustain.  When Avalon left me people thought and still think that I would be fine.  The message they want me to hear is that I can abandon this love I took up and vowed to hold.

Love endures all things.  Love believes all things.  Love never fails.  I may have to travel the rest of the journey alone.  I may spend my nights in solitude.  I will not pine away. It is not about false hope or not accepting reality.  It is about the nature of eternal things.

My love is not supposed to be based on what others say or do.  It is not rooted in the proximity of others.  It is rooted in the eternal nature of vows to God and his love for me.  It is rooted in the love I receive from God that I am supposed to mirror to others..and the Southern Cross

Second Thoughts – And the Southern Cross – And You Know it Will

Greetings Dear Reader,

Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
Lookin' for that woman, girl,
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will.

There is a lot here.  It is the chorus that drives home the point.  It is the powerful and important.  There are things here I must embrace if I am honest.  This is also the place where some see a problem with this piece of music.  First I will deal with what I must acknowledge:
  • I have fallen so many times
  • Spirits use me whether those spirits are good or evil
  • I cannot forget what heaven (God) has done in my life
  • I have searched long and hard for someone who puts enduring love first
  • Love will endure

I have fallen many times.  I fail.  I fall and forget to follow Christ.  Notice that the writer does not say ”you” or “we”.  It is my obligation to see to my own failings in every relationship.  If I see to my own sin and follow Christ then I will be able to love others properly.

Whether it is the Holy Spirt or good or fallen angels, I am used by spiritual beings.   It may be as a tool, a pawn, an example, or a beloved child.  There are no secular moments.  There are no rusty swords in this battle.  There is no truce, cease fire, or armistice.  Every action of mine serves those that are good or evil.  It is true no matter who I feel about it.

I must not forget the good that has been brought into my life.  I must not discount the good others have done.  I must give God the credit for all of it.  All good things come from the Father.  All good things  come from the Father.  Failing to live this is failing to be properly “used”.

I have searched as long as I can remember for a fellow traveler who will put love first in all things.  No human can do this in every instance.  I realize that.  I still know that things work when we work to put love first in every situation.  For some reason I have not found that.  I owe to everyone to be this way.

Love can endure.  Love endures all things.  Love believes and fights for dominance.  Love can heal everything and “you know it will.”

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – And the Southern Cross – All that I have left

Greetings Dear Reader,

So I'm sailing for tomorrow; my dreams are a dyin'.
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship and all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left, and music is her name.

The waters get a little rough here.   Sometimes we do not know that our dreams are dying.  We are sometimes the last to find out that someone has killed their portion in supporting them.

We cannot control this.  We should not try.  People will run from the truth.  Dreams will die.  Tomorrow will still come and that is where we find our hope.  That is where we set our sails, fly our fags, and anchor our hope.

My love is still anchored in some aspects.  My friend Dwight asked me if there is a time to just let it go.  If we forsake love then our love was not unconditional.  If we abandon the love then our broken hearts will never mend.  We may ”move on” but we do so denying a part of ourselves.

Christ is my true anchor and my love for him will never fail me.  I may fail it.  I may fail to see it.  Others can shatter me but Christ will take the pieces.  He may become all that I have left because of the actions of others.  If, however, I continue to love him and them I will find my way.

So I sail for tomorrow, burying my dead dreams but never cutting the ties to the love I vowed to hold for a lifetime.  I have my ship, Jesus, and even if I am proven wrong and a fool I will have sailed through the journey loving others.  I know it is better than that.  I believe the journey ends well.  Only tomorrow will tell.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – And the Southern Cross – Naked Truth

Greetings Dear Reader,

Some things are impossible for me.   Internally I cannot deny how I feel.  I always know how I feel.  I have trouble most of the time communicating some of it.  Even now, after all my work at speaking the truth lovingly I have difficulty expressing how I feel about things.

'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from Is so small.
But it's as big as the promise; the promise of a comin' day.

The truth is there and it will out.  Even when it is small and self-contained running from it never works.  The small truths that we hide from each other become our destiny.  We do not want it to be that way but it what happens.

Whether it is friend, family, or lovers we sequester the things that we should say.  We hide the truths and think that they will stay hidden.  They do not.  They find a way to become as big as a coming day.  They heal or damage or both.  It is the way of truth.

There were truths in that journey I did not know.  There are truths that I try to avoid.  When I journey well I do so in truth.  When I travel unburdened I see truth.  I have laid on the edge of the ocean awaiting the coming day.  It comes whether we will it or not. It comes truth, and strong, and beautiful.  It promises potential and portends change.

If I follow Christ the truth will see me through no matter what else assails me.  The truth is that love is ours to hold or abandon.  No one can kill my love but me.  No one can give up on it but me.  If I lift a love it is my obligation to hold it in truth.  Anything else is a lie.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – And the Southern Cross – Seven League Boots

Greetings Dear Reader,

Southern Cross is based on the song "Seven League Boots" by Rick and Michael Curtis. Stills explained, "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce. It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished ii” Songfacts.com

This song truly is a gem.  It starts in the middle of a journey.  I suppose this is one of the reasons it drilled so deep into me so long ago.   I have loved this song for 34 years.  I have understood it for much less time than that, but I am getting ahead of my story.

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands.
Sailing a reach before a following' sea.
She was making' for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete.

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline; nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon, I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

First things first:  The first verse is so very clearly set in French Polynesia.  Papeete is in Tahiti.  The Marquesas are volcanic islands but they are off the path of the trade winds.  We see the beauty and splendor that is open sea and spray provided by good wind and a following sea.  Then we meet the moment.

“In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you.”   This could be California but I think it is near Sydney in New South Wales.  I had no idea when I first loved this song how much this line would mean to me.  That is something for my mind.  Then we meet the foil:  “But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.”

We run when we should not.  We run when we should fight for good and better and best.  We run from things that hurt and frighten us.  We run form honor and hope.  When others run I do not always see why and I do not handle it well.

I have run when I should have fought.  I have seen others run when the greater good was to fight for love.  We lift love and promise to hold it only to run when it gets too hard or we want our own things.

It is our duty to hold love no matter how hard it is.  It is our obligation to not run but to stand and love no matter what it costs us.  We are obligated to vertical love to the Father and horizontal love to each other even if we do not have the wind or a following sea.  When we life love we are obligated to hold it.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
