Second Thoughts ~ Respectful Remembrance

Greetings Dear Reader,

This weekend marked a very important anniversary in my life.  I do not want to allow it to pass without acknowledgment.  I also to not want to violate the wishes of others involved in it.  Forgive me for being a little cryptic.

What I will say is this:  I have only once in my life given up on a relationship and I was wrong.  There have been those who have given up on me before and since.  There is no one I have stopped loving or that I reject as someone worthy of love.  It is not my place to do so.

We can say that we do not have the strength.  We are not supposed to have it.  We are supposed to find it in Christ.  We can say that our problems are too big but that is a lie.  Love can crush any barrier if we allow it.  We say that we will “fix it later” but we are supposed to seek peace with everyone at all times.  We take the risk of death preventing that for us.

So, on the anniversary that is dear to me I mark my love for those involved.  I stand firm in my faith that in Christ all things can be healed.  I stand firm in my promise to never again close the door on those I love.  I stand humbled by all the beauty and grace I see in others that is such a blessing to me.

You know who you are to me Dear Reader.  I love you and always shall.  The way back is always open and you are always welcome to journey with me.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts ~ 52 Year Mission

Greetings Dear Reader,

I was living in an old Victorian home in what is not considered Mid-town Atlanta.  We had a orange-pink herculon sofa that was both hot and itchy.  The summer heat had lingered making the living room stuffy and intolerable.

Even in the late evening with the windows open and the fan osculating its brief relief against my skin I could not get comfortable.  Mother insisted that I settle down and directed my attention to our small, tin-foiled eared black and white television.  She told me that I would like what was coming.  As if on cue the screen went black and a few stars blinked into place.  The words that would become my siren call crackled out of the monotone speaker.  “Space, the final frontier; these are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise…”

I do not recall if the allure was immediate or it built slowly through that first episode.  I do know, however, that for fifty-two years even the antiquated original series episodes continue to capture and connect with me.  So much of the child in me wishes it were all real in my time.  The wanderer in my soul longs to “seek out new live, new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

On this anniversary of the original Star Trek series debut, I am forced to contemplate how much of an influence it has truly has on my life.  I do not believe in the no win scenario.  I do believe in infinite diversity in infinite combinations.  Logic and passion can live together in harmony.  Red shirts will be lost, ships will be destroyed, and tribbles are nothing but trouble.

Still in all of it the one thing that rings true is that no matter the scope and complexity of the universe and it problems, the answer always comes down to exploring it and learning from it.  After all, it is not the sun up in the sky; it is the Son of God.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – Anguished Anniversaries

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

Today is one of those days that became significant with promises and potential.   Things changed.  Plans changed.  Resolve change.  Now it is rife with sorrow and momentary reminders of hope unrealized.  Some years this annual reminder is harder to carry than others.  This year it has attacked me full force without warrant or warning.

Tears come unbidden and unwanted.  They do, however, wash the eyes and the heart.  I suppose one of my gifts/curses is that I never let go of love.  On Sunday I deeply missed my Grandfather.  Today another loss haunts me and begs me to despair.

I know that all things will be made right some day.  I know that my current distress is less than others, but it is my distress.  I am thankful for distractions and sidebars but at the end of the day it is the same.  I turn in to attempt rest tonight feeling the pain fresh and warm instead of old and cold.

Tomorrow will have new opportunities and challenges.  Tonight if I could have one thing it would simply be to not be alone.  It would be to have a fellow traveler who could hold on to the promise to travel with me.  That is not to be but I cannot let it bar me from giving my best to others.  I cannot let it make me bitter or unloving.

So in this absent anniversary I cry out in the darkness knowing I am heard by the Father and loved but also knowing that dreams await me that will torment and tear.  I think some trick in our mind prevents us from knowing the damage we leave behind when we leave, else we would not do it.
