Plenty’s Horn ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Some years ago, a friend visited the Hershey factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Whilst there, she ordered me a giant tin of their miniature chocolates.   I literally had hundreds of small chocolate bars in a two-gallon tin.  I had a copious abundance of tiny chocolates.

This gift thrilled my Daughter and my Grandsons.  They knew that if I had candy, they would get candy.  It thrilled me to share the delights with them.  The abundance made it easy to share what I had that was given as a gift.  Eventually, however, the candy ran out and was gone.  This is not the case with the things we have been pondering.

As we have seen, we have a plentiful supply of the things necessary to follow Christ in harmony.  The products of love, grace, mercy, kindness, and joy are all available to us is we choose them.  The intent of the Father is that they flow through us to help others find the way home.

There is no need to hold back on being good to others.  We consider the risk to our hearts and place expectations on our efforts instead of giving freely from our limitless supply.  We are able to establish a flow of love for others that permeates all that we do.  Understanding and applying this gives unbound opportunity to give to others without reservation.  It brings all we do into alignment with the path that Christ wishes us to walk.

As we make the turn toward the Hallowed Days and the feasts that mark the closing of the year, I must embrace the abundance I have been given from Plenty’s horn.  I must give freely to anyone who I encounter and do so without regard to my own needs.  The Father has promised over and over to supply those.  As we move on to other thoughts, Dear Reader, we can better journey together if we exchange the things we so desperately need that we can only supply for each other.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ Like Dish Soap

Greetings Dear Reader,

In 1973 the predominant dishwashing liquid on the market was Lemon Scented Joy.  Since I was my mum’s automated dishwasher, I knew the scent well.  Then, a blue bottle of something called Dawn appeared on our counter.  It did not smell like lemons and it was dark blue instead of sunny yellow.  Mum assured me that it was just as good and told me to hurry up with the dishes.  She was in a hurry because in 1973 I was also her TV remote control.

A few years later as the two remained the leading choices for doing one’s dishes by hand, I learned something that bothered me.  Both products, though competition in the market were made by Proctor and Gamble.  I am unsure why it bothered me so much.  I have decided that they work equally well and I still prefer the lemon scent.  I can be happy with either one.

I was, however, unhappy when my dish soap changed when I was young.  When I think of that story the pun machine in my brain immediately goes for the groan factor of mum robbing me of my joy.  Then again, we cannot be robbed of our actual joy.  We can only choose to give it away or deny it.

We are told that we are to never be without joy.  Even in dire circumstances, we are required to be filled with and express our joy.  It is not because we are happy or sad.  It is because we know that even the very worst is only temporary.  No suffering seems good when we go through it, but that is not where we stay.  My Grandfather used to always say, “In Bible days, when bad things happened, they would say, ‘And it came to pass,’ not ‘And it came to stay.’”  His point was that no problem is permanent and that our joy comes from where we are going, not where we are.

If we are allowing the flow of love from the Father to work through us and we understand that there is abundant grace to help us through any circumstance, then there is no reason for us not to be filled with joy for what is to come.  It is a matter of using our faith in the love and grace of the Father that provides this flow.  Grace has us in hand.  It will never let us down because it is generated by the Father’s love.

The journey will be filled with times of happiness and sorrow.  It will have days where joy comes from our dancing in the sunshine as well as days where we must wrench it from the storm clouds.  Either way, it is ours to have and to copious give to others.  We can find the joy in all of our trials if we draw close to Christ and follow him in faith.  Nothing can hinder the flow of joy from Plenty’s horn other than our own will.  Happiness is a choice.  Joy is an obligation for which there is nothing but benefit to us.  It is something that we should get used to as we will have it all around us eventually.  Why not then let love and grace help it flow through us?  After all, Dear Reader, it is Joy that will flow everywhere in the Dawn of that Undiscovered Country.  This is why I always wish you joy in the journey.

Grace Got You – Mercy Me

Have you ever met those who
Keep humming when the song's through?
It's like they're living life to a whole different tune

And have you ever met those that
Keep hoping when it's hopeless
It's like they figured out what the rest haven't yet

The second when you realize
When you have inside
It's only just a matter of time 'til you

Sing, so the back row hears you
Glide, 'cause walking just won't do
Dance, you don't have to know how to
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Laugh, 'til your whole side's hurting
Smile like you just got away with something
Why? 'Cause you just got away with something
Ever since, ever since grace got you

So, when you're standing in the rain again
You might as well be dancing
Why? 'Cause there ain't no storm that can change how this ends
So next time when you feel blue
Don't let that smile leave you
Why? 'Cause you have every reason just to…

Sing, so the back row hears you
Glide, 'cause walking just won't do
Dance, you don't have to know how to
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Laugh, 'til your whole side's hurting
Smile like you just got away with something
Why? 'Cause you just got away with something
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Grace got you

Got away with something, bubbling inside of you
Spilling over 'cause your life is full, how incredible
Undeniable, monumental like the Eiffel
Uncontrollable, let the joy flow through, haha

Giddy oh, but pretty, pretty please
Let me see your hands in the air with you out your seats
Warm it up, let go, shout it out, celebrate
When you can't articulate just say Amazing Grace

The second when you realize
When you have inside
It's only just a matter of (only just a matter of)
It's only just a matter of time 'til you

Sing, so the back row hears you
Glide, 'cause walking just won't do
Dance, you don't have to know how to
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Laugh, 'til your whole side's hurting
Smile like you just got away with something
Why? 'Cause you just got away with something
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Yeah yea yea yea yea
Ever since, ever since grace got you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Grace got you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ever since, ever since Grace got you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Grace got you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Grace got you

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Plenty’s Horn ~ The Proper Cycle

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have been doing my own laundry since I was ten.  I was well into my twenties before I learned the value of the delicate cycle setting on a washing machine.  It cleans more fragile fabrics with less agitation a gentler spin cycle.  It is like hand washing without the hands-on effort.

This very simple way to clean less-durable fabrics still uses the strength of the washing machine.  It merely applies that power in a way that extracts the dirt without damaging that which is dirty.  It gives us what we need without doing damage.

This translates to us so clearly in the idea that we are to be gentle with each other.  Too many of our fellow travelers wield the Gospel as a weapon. They try to bash others with truth and anger instead of using love, grace, and mercy to be good to those in need of the truth.  Throughout the history of the Church, we have strayed into modes of forcing faith onto others, even those that are violent, cruel, and heinous.

We are required to be gentle.  Further, we can be gentle infinitely if we choose to be so.  The idea of coercion, shame, and guilt being used to draw others to follow Christ is foolish.  It is also counter to the idea that we are to deal with each other in love.  We are to be set permanently on the gentle cycle.  We are not to use agitation to change things unless it is the result of gentle loving truth.

The violence of the world is to be foreign to us.  It is to be a part of us that we exhibit gentle peace.  We are not supposed to be ruffled by the difficulties that others send our way.  We are instead to present bountiful gentle responses that yield evidence of the love we hold for others.  This too comes from the plentiful provision that Christ promises in our journey home.  This is the setting we are given as the means to show others our love, kindness, mercy, and grace.  This is how we are to interact, always Dear Reader.

The idea of an analogy from a washing machine has its limitations.  This standard of gentleness in all we do, however, is a clear way to stand out from others.  It is a clear way to show others that they are safe and that we will be good to them at every turn.  We do not have to do it in our own strength as the Father promises to give us the power through the Spirit to accomplish this.  We can be gentle in all things if we choose.  It is what works.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ Two-Sided Coin

Greetings Dear Reader,

When considering the flow of Plenty’s horn, there is a combination in the stream necessary to giving evidence of the love that we are to share with everyone.  This two-sided coin must work in tandem to be successful.  It is also another area where our need is so deep that we must give it out freely to receive it for ourselves.

Grace and mercy function together.  They move through the journey providing the space that people need in order to see love.  In case the relationship is unclear, here is a simple combined explanation.   Grace is getting something we do not deserve and mercy is not getting what we deserve relative to the wrong we have done.  Both can be summed up as using our power relative to others to give them the best in order to show them love.

Let us walk through this together Dear Reader.  When someone is unkind or lacks love for others, we have the power to show them love and are obligated to do so.  Grace is given to us so that we can let it flow through us to others.  It allows us to create a space where others can experience love and have to opportunity to grow in that place.

There is always the fact that some respond to kindness and love with rejection, anger, or even hatred.  This is where mercy steps in and shows its power.  When someone is in need of or asking for mercy, we have great power.  That authority must only be wielded to administer love and grace.  We may have the supremacy and even the right to cast someone aside but that is not how it is supposed to work.

Just as we need mercy from the Father, we must show mercy to others.  The power of grace and mercy is to apply unconditional love and forgiveness to others in real-time.  I need these things daily in my life and must, therefore, give them out freely to others.  The beauty of it is that I will never run out of grace and mercy because they are dependent on the supply of the Father which is unending.  These things can flow copiously through me so that others may see the love they need and, in turn, learn to live this way as well.

I must exercise this daily.  I am not perfect at it, Dear Reader, but walking this path becomes easier with practice.  The beauty in it is that the Father gives me the grace and mercy I need to learn how to spend the coin of grace and mercy in love for others.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ 490

Greetings Dear Reader,

I think that we often miss when Jesus is being funny.  An example would be when there are 5000 hungry people and Andrew tells him about it.  Jesus asks what is available.  Andrew replies that there is a boy with five loaves of bread and two fish.  Jesus says that is just fine and to sit everyone down to eat.  Take a moment to see the humor in this.

I think we also miss the humor in Jesus’ conversation with Peter about forgiveness.  When we read the dialogue, we read it in our serious Jesus Bible voice.  We fail to see the humanity in Christ when he is talking.  I picture Jesus smiling at Peter and saying, “you need to forgive him seventy times seven,” and then watching as Peter does the math in his head.

Jesus goes on to explain the vital nature of forgiveness.  He also makes it clear that the math is not what we should be concerned about.  He does not intend for us to keep a tally of wrongs done to us by others and forgiven by us so that we can look forward to them hitting number 491.  He wishes for us to forgive others in a never-ending stream of love, grace, and mercy.

The habit of forgiving, because it should be a habit, is provisioned by aligning our thinking with that of the Father.  His grace and mercy allow forgiveness to flow from him to us in copious amounts.  The very existence of the world depends on the Father’s forgiveness in every moment.  He desires for us to be the same way.

We are to allow forgiveness to flow through us to others in a spirit of humility and kindness.  We stand on our foundation of love and we flood the world with forgiveness.  We become difficult to offend and easy to be around when we adopt this stance.  Our burdens are much lighter and following Christ becomes easier Dear Reader.

Remember that Jesus connects forgiveness from the Father with our forgiveness with others.  Failure to do the latter results in difficulties in the former.  We are not earning forgiveness by forgiving.  We are, however, walking in the grace and humility required to follow Christ.  So, Dear Reader, I will never know if you reach number 490 because I am not going to keep count.  In case you were wondering, I have already forgiven you.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ Forbearing

Greetings Dear Reader,

Let me say first that this has nothing to do with bears.  Forbear is a word that we do not often hear outside of Bible reading.  It is, however, a good word.  We have replaced it with tolerance and the difference in meaning is slight enough that they both work.  I prefer forebear because it is associated with our foundational abundance from Plenty’s horn, love.

An exercise I do in my mind when I feel I am becoming impatient is to consider why I have set a limit on my forbearance, tolerance of another.  Some things are intolerable such as violence or harmful aggression.  Most of the things that upset us, however, are a matter of impatience or preference on our part.

We are taught that the source of our ability to forbear is our love of others.  We are to forebear in love.  We are to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love.”  Humility, gentleness, and patience are required of us with everyone.  The moment we begin to suggest reasons why we are the exception to this guidance is the moment where we proclaim that our impatience, pride, and harshness are allowable and that love is not the foundation this time.

When based on the love that we receive from the Father, there is no limit to the supply of forbearance we have available for others.  We can copiously apply gentle, humble, patient tolerance to any situation if we choose to do so.  We have a great capacity for this and it can change the world.  The most difficult person or persons in our lives are due our best forbearance in love.

The truly notable thing about this is that it benefits us more than it does others.  It keeps us from nursing anger and bitterness.  It diminishes our habits of pride and creates gentle behaviors within us.  These become our ways and can become our lifestyle.  The benefit is that we move through difficulties with an air of peace because we are not caught up in the anger that is bred from failing to be tolerant.

This does not mean that we agree with everything another does Dear Reader.  It means that we respond in love no matter how much we disagree.  It means that we do not expect those who do not follow Christ to act like those who do follow him.  It is why the Father provides love and forbearance in plenty for us.  From the foundation of love, forbearance can flow from us in a way that changes the hearts of others if we only allow it.  I must dwell on this and make it my portion.  I must become the embodiment of copious forbearance in love.  If we walk together in this, Dear Reader, we can create an area of tolerance that does not comprise our faith and gives others dry ground to get their footing in it.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ Abundance

Greetings Dear Reader,

The most popular origin story for the cornucopia, Plenty’s horn, is that it was the horn of the goat, Amaltheia who nurtured Zeus as an infant.  The story is that he accidentally broke off one of her horns.  The horn then had the power to provide unending nourishment.  The legends around the horn include Hercules and it became the attribute of several Greek and Roman gods.  In their mythology, the desired a god who could provide for their succor and sustenance.

We often hear that the Father is El Shaddai and it is usually translated as God Almighty.  A more accurate translation is the literal translation of God the many breasted one.  It is related to the Passover phrase, “it is enough” or “it would have been enough.”  From the beginning of creation, the Father has promised that he would be our provider.  We usually associate this with Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah our provider.  What catches my attention is that long before the Greeks, the Father made it clear that he was a provider and involved the symbol of the goat and the ram in his provision.

The Father wishes for us to trust him for the abundant provision of our needs.  Jesus echoed this when he asked why we give thought to our clothing, food, and shelter when the Father has promised already to provide it.  We, in turn, are to be generous when we see the needs of others.  We are to let the provision of the Father flow through us to evidence his love and provision for everyone.

Instead, we worry about where things will come from and how we make ends meet.  We spend energy and effort on things that are already promised to us.  We withhold generosity and care of others because we fear we will lack what we want or need.  When the Father instructs Malachi on giving, he says this: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. ‘Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.’”

That Father wants to bless us so richly that we do not have enough room to receive it.  This then gives us the freedom to give to others abundantly from our abundance.  Notice, though, that we are required to act first.  We are to give so that the Father can pass the test.  Ponder this, Dear Reader, the God who asks us to do all we do by faith also asks us to put him to a test.

Plenty’s horn is ready to flow in and through us to the needs of others.  We need only be willing to test the Father by obeying the words of the Son.  We need to believe that El Shaddai is the same today as he was then.  I must live my life receiving from Plenty’s horn so that I can, in turn, give from it.  I am not suggesting a health and wealth approach to faith and following.  I am adopting the belief that “God shall supply all your need ACCORDING to his riches and glory.”  That, Dear Reader, is a great deal of provision.  Feel free to enjoy the abundance with me.  Share with me your stories of how the Father passes the test.

El Shaddai – Michael Card

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonia,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkamka na Adonai,
We will praise and lift You high,
El Shaddai.

Through your love and through the ram,
You saved the son of Abraham;
Through the power of your hand,
Turned the sea into dry land.

To the outcast on her knees,
You were the God who really sees,
And by Your might,
You set Your children free.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonia,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkamka na Adonai,
We will praise and lift You high,
El Shaddai.

Through the years You've made it clear,
That the time of Christ was near,
Though the people couldn't see
What Messiah ought to be.

Though Your Word contained the plan,
They just could not understand
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of Your Son.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkamka na Adonai,
I will praise and lift You high,
El Shaddai.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,

Age to age You're still the same,

Plenty’s Horn ~ Stream of Plenty

Greetings Dear Reader,

My Grandfather’s farm obtained its water from a spring that flowed out of the side the mountain that was part of the farm.  A pipe carried the water to the house and there was a tap on the pipe where one could get a drink at any time.  On hot afternoons I would drink long and splash the cold water on my face.

The water from the spring also flowed through the farm’s old springhouse.  This was used to keep things cool before electricity and refrigeration.  On the hottest days, I would sit in the spring house taking in the cool of the stone and water.  There was a granite shelf that I used as a seat.  It was where butter was kept when the Springhouse was used for preserving food.  I called it the butter bench. Often my Grandfather would join me with a pair of Nehi Grape sodas.  We would sit in the spring house and talk for a bit.

As a boy, I was fascinated that the spring flowed no matter how dry the weather.  Even during the barren summer when I was seven the stream never ceased to flow with its cool plenty.  Into the granite stone walls that formed that spring house was etched Plenty’s horn.  Sitting there with my Grandfather on an August afternoon was where I learned about it and how it symbolizes the plenty that we have.  He explained that his father had carved it there to remind us to be thankful for the water and the coolness it always provides.

One afternoon when I was angry at my boyhood friend Russel, my Grandfather found me in the spring house brooding.  He sat next to me on the butter bench and passed me a Nehi Grape.  He gently coaxed out of me the reason for my anger with Russel.  Then he pointed to his father’s carving in the wall.

“One of the things we get to do,” he began, “is to choose to give away the things we can never lose.  We are given the ability to love by God and he is like this stream.  His love can flow through us forever without growing any weaker or diminishing in any way.”

That was the first time I recall someone explaining to me that we can love without any need to believe we will run out of love.  Like Plenty’s horn, we can give our love to others in abundance and never risk having less to give.  Our command to have love as the foundation for all we do proceeds from the provision of the Father for love to be always available to us and through us.

It is our privilege to pass the love of the Father on to others without reservation.  The flow can be constant as that spring.  It can be refreshing, free, and useful in the lives of others.  It can be a refuge and a restful place if we allow it.  The stream comes from the Father and he wishes for us to make it the motivation for all we think, say, and do in life.  That, Dear Reader, is the abundance that we must share with the entire world.  It is what we can give as the foundation for all other things.  It is the basis for all the other things that we have in abundance and is necessary to them all.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Plenty’s Horn ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

“In easy state upon this couch, there sat a jolly Giant, glorious to see; who bore a glowing torch, in shape not unlike Plenty’s horn, and held it up, high up, to shed its light on Scrooge, as he came peeping round the door.  ‘Come in!” exclaimed the Ghost.  ‘Come in! and know me better, man!’” – Charles Dickens

What we call here Plenty’s horn is the cornucopia.  It is that symbol we associate with the harvest, Autumn, and abundance provided this time of year.  Whether you acknowledge that these things come from the Father or not, we must agree that the provision comes from somewhere.

It is in this that I begin to think this time of year of how we meter things that relate to our treatment of each other.  As my heart turns toward the closing of the year, I long to see the abundance of good things for everyone.  I wish for all of my fellow humans to see the abundance of love and grace that flows from the Father in a constant stream from which we are all free to drink.

As I prepare my heart for the seasons of gratitude and giving, I want to begin to ponder deeply the things that we have in abundance to share with others.  I am not speaking of the material but the intangible.  Like the Vikings did, I wish to pass around the drinking horn from which we can take in our fill of things that help and heal.  We can also, in turn, pour those things out to others without fear of having less for ourselves.

Please, Dear Reader, walk with me as we examine the many things that we have in such deep abundance that we can constantly give them away and never have less to give.  We will also never lack from doing this.  In truth, we will be nourished by the sharing of them.  As always, I treasure your thoughts and questions.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

The Death of Leaves ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

I will journey north over the coming week.  The colours there are already bright and the air is much cooler than here.  As I drive through the Midwest, I will take in the various stages of the Autumn change.

What I must take with me is a deeper understanding and appreciation of how temporal everything around me is.  The life I am gifted is mine to live but it will reach and pass its Autumn.  I am in control of my choices about living but not about how long I am allowed to live.  My journey to Winter and then to that undiscovered Spring is measured by the one who created them both.

It is up to me to use each moment to follow Christ more closely and revel in the changes when they come.  I must see all that is created as deserving of my love and kindness.  Even the dry crisp leaf still has purpose and usefulness to the world.  It will become the soil that nourishes future leaves in a Spring yet to come.  Whether I see that which I deem success or not whilst I live, every moment that I spend loving others and being good to them assures that in that undiscovered Spring there will be things that remain.

That crispness in the air is a reminder that “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”  We must see that we are reflected in the seasons Dear Reader.  We must journey together and allow our lives to exhale the love that Christ has given us so that others may breathe it in and live.  When you travel with me, the journey is always richer.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn
