Back to Normal ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

We always hear the question, “what is normal?”   Defining it can be very subjective and often elusive.  Normal is the habits we have and the patterns we are used to following.  There are objective norms but they almost always have a range.

For most of us normal is the routine we follow throughout the week.  It is often seen to us as the drudgery we endure to get to the glimpses of what we would rather be doing.  Instead of pursuing what our hearts desire, we run a path of sustenance that provides necessities but is not rewarding.

I consider this equation whenever I take on something as “work”.   I do not simply work for pay.  I trade part of my life for pay.  I evaluate if I am willing to trade my life for that thing.  This has led to another, deeper thought about this.  When I give my life to complaints, anger, and offenses, I am trading life for strife.  I am wasting an opportunity to love.

This leads to the idea of examining why we get offended.  We establish a set of norms in our minds defining what is offensive.  We call them pet peeves, last nerves, and triggers.  What we fail to do is own that we choose what will offend us.  We decide where our love and understanding stops and where irritation and anger begin.  I am not saying that there is never justifiable anger or that things do not irritate us.  It is clear, however, that we are a society of people who get offended as a norm.

As a Christ-follower, I am obligated to have norms that included love, grace, kindness, and peace.  If I am focused on offense, I am not looking for ways to love those around me.  I must move to a place where I refuse to trade life for offenses.  I must become, as much as is possible for a human, unoffendable.  Building the norm of focusing on love of others is a great start.  It will take intention to realign my long patterns of thought to a place where my norms of offense no longer exist.

I must also understand that the cross and the gospel are offensive to others.  For some reason, kindness and love can often be met with anger and offense.  I cannot allow the offense that others feel mitigate my willingness to deal with others in love and grace.  As I walk through this year, we will often revisit this idea of being unoffendable.  We will look at every topic through the lenses of love and being unable to be offended.  We will begin tomorrow by beginning to deconstruct the Liturgy of the Common Man.  I will explain that then as promised.  Thank you for your time and company, Dear Reader.  Your companionship in the journey is priceless.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Back to Normal ~ Anticipated Angst

Greetings Dear Reader,

I was reading about the formation of community this past month in anticipation of our weekly life-group study being on that topic.  We have a central book that we will go through and I will read that on pace with the group.  I do, however, like to be up to speed on the current thought in the area.

One of the thoughts that reached deep inside of me was an analysis of how people think about each other.  The summation was that so many people walk around interacting with others wondering, “how are you going to hurt me.”  This struck me at a very visceral level.  It is at the core of the fear that keeps us from loving others and causes us to take offense so easily.

From our view God to our thoughts about the stranger on the corner, we have adopted a culture of fear and anger.  We have turned pain into anticipation of pain and angst.  We debilitate ourselves because of what “might” happen.  We use our vast creativity to imagine things and base our lives on those horrid imaginations.  Imagining the worst becomes our normal when we are supposed to anticipate the Father doing better than the very best we can imagine.

The journey we are on does have real pain and danger.  We do have fears and angst.  We also build a culture around it where we imagine the worst and sometimes aid in creating it.  If we proceed instead to do everything out of love and create a norm where we are unoffendable, we can possibly find a path where things are more beautiful, richer, and deeper.  We can have lives where the offered angst of others washes over us.  We can refuse to have that norm be ours.

As I draw toward the close of this short series, I plan to focus for a few days next week on the core of my platform for this year.  I wish to build on the foundation of love in every moment a year’s worth of learning to be unoffendable.   This will help me to love others at every turn.  It will also keep me from carrying anger or hurt for too long.  It will limit the avenues through which I can be angered or hurt.  I look forward to the ways in which this unfolds and hope that you can walk with me.  I always value the ways we navigate the journey together.  As always, your thoughts and questions are precious to me.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Back to Normal ~ Meat Tenderizer

Greetings Dear Reader,

Have you ever considered how meat tenderizer works?  “The two main ingredients in most powdered tenderizers are papain, found in papayas, and bromelain, found in pineapples. Both enzymes attack the muscle fibers and the collagen webs that holds them together. This softens the meat and makes it more tender. It is also why you cannot put raw papaya or pineapple in gelatin desserts. The papain and bromelain break down the gelatin, just as they do the collagen in meats.”

That will handle the cooking lesson for the morning except to remind us that meat is muscle tissue.  That is important to my thoughts this morning.  You see, the heart is a muscle.  The holiday season acts as a meat tenderizer on many people but we then get back to “normal”.  It is like we sprinkle meat hardener on our hearts.  The yielded grace, kindness, and generosity are locked back inside until the cycle returns.

We do not have to un-soften our hearts.  We are not obligated to put away compassion and joy with the lights and wrapping.  It is always allowed that we have a heart that is loving and kind.  It can be hard to tenderize our hearts.  Fortunately, there is a remedy for that.  The Father wishes for us to remain tenderhearted towards him.  He says in Ezekiel, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

If we choose to avoid getting back to normal, we can create a new norm of tenderness to the Spirit moving us to continue in generosity, joy, kindness, and love. The way of things is to become closed to the joy that is available to us every day.  We can remain tenderhearted.  We can choose to set a new level in our lives.

To continue to walk on the foundation of love, we must keep our hearts tender and pliable.  We have all had tough steaks that could have used some meat tenderizer.  We have all encountered people whose hearts are hard.  There are times when life pushes us to be hardhearted.  The busyness of business drives us to forget that other humans need the beauty of our kindness and love in every situation.

I must have a laser focus on my love and kindness for others.  I must be so engaged in loving others that everyday offenses that harden my heart are ineffective.  I must yield to the Spirit moving me to keep the law of Christ in everything.  The law is founded on this, Dear Reader: loving the Father with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and loving other humans unconditionally.  If we do this, our hearts become tender.  We may be hurt or saddened by others but we will not take up offenses.  I know that this is the path I must walk.  I hope you can keep me company on it.  I love you and treasure your companionship.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Back to Normal ~ 4,162 Emails

Greetings Dear Reader,

I can hear some of you pondering the title.  Is that the number of emails he has gotten praising his Christmas book, The Twelve Tales of Christmas?  Perhaps that is how many speaking invitations he has for the coming year.  Maybe, those are how many people asked questions about his BLOG.

Sadly, it is none of these.  I would welcome any and all of those.  That number, however, is the highest number of emails waiting for me upon return from a vacation.  This was many years ago and I hope to never eclipse it unless it is one of the aforementioned situations.  In the job that supports me currently, I do hear others returning from holiday talking about the vast number of emails through which they must wade.  This is part of getting back to a normal that I feel is more abnormal every day.

I am thankful for the work I have that provides income until I can make my living from writing alone.  I believe, more and more, that we have constructed a world where we work for money and get very little joy out of it.  I know that my “money job” makes a difference in the lives of others and provides for my needs.  I do believe that were I not pursuing the life to which I am called that I would be miserable.

The normal we have created of trading life for money so that we can squeeze in some leisure and some things is not satisfying.  So many people are trading five days for two.  Once they reach the two, they have nothing left with which to enjoy it.  I work with people who spend their two days off still working.  These are good people doing good work but they always seem tired.

I would say that if we are to find lives that fulfill us, we must see what it is that gives us joy and pursue it.  I am not saying to be irresponsible.  I am suggesting that we can construct lives where instead of trading our time for crumbs of leisure, we build towards finding our way in the things that ignite and inspire us.

I have a friend who is a construction worker.  He goes from site to site preparing it for the laying of a foundation.  He works with a small crew for a large company.  He loves what he does, therefore, not feeling spent and tired at the end of the workweek he also chases his dreams.  If you visit his home though, he will show you his workshop where he crafts beautiful cutting boards and plaques from hardwood.  He has begun going to trade fairs on the weekends and will soon eclipse the money he makes preparing foundations with the art he enjoys.  He builds every single day toward the normal he wishes.

This is what we all must do, Dear Reader.  We must find that which we love and pursue it.  My Grandfather used to often say, “Do what you love and the money will come.”  If we are going to create a new normal, we must reject that we have to do the uninspiring with our lives.  I think that part of the great disquiet we carry is when we reject the idea that there must be something more.  There is.  It calls to us and we grow weary from resisting it.

I am taking steps to pursue this life with greater energy and speed.  I see the turn of the tide toward what I love being all that I do in life.  It takes courage, work, and determination but it is possible always.  Before too much of the new decade slips through the glass, we must follow on toward that which we are called to become.  We can encourage each other along the way and so, make the journey lighter.

The Great Adventure – Steven Curtis Chapman

Saddle up your horses!

Started out this morning in the usual way
Chasing thoughts inside my head
I thought I had to do today
Another time around the circle
Try to make it better than the last

I opened up the Bible
And I read about me
Said I'd been a prisoner
And God's Grace had set me free
And somewhere between the pages
It hit me like a lightning bolt
I saw a big frontier in front of me
And I heard somebody say let's go

Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa
This is the great adventure

So come on, get ready for the ride of your life
Gonna leave long faced religion
In a cloud of dust behind
And discover all the new horizons
Just waiting to be explored
This is what we were created for, yeah

Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the Glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa
This is the great adventure

We'll travel on, over mountains so high
We'll go through valleys below
Still, through it all we'll find that
This is the greatest journey
That the human heart will ever see
The love of God will take us far
Beyond our wildest dreams

So, saddle up your horses
Let’s get ready to ride

Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze (we've got a trail, we've got a trail to blaze)
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the Glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa

This is the great adventure
Saddle up, saddle up your horses

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Back to Normal ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have already heard this phrase in conference calls, at church, and at social gatherings over the last few days.  It is part of the annual liturgy of the common man (we will get to that later in the month).  This particular cant goes something like, “Well, it is time for things to get back to normal.”

People are bundling away decorations and special holiday traditions in favor of what they have established as normal, day-to-day appearance, actions, and attitudes.  From October through December is the time we transform so many things.  Then, when the timer reaches the socially agreed upon day or hour, we put it away.  The difficulty is that we put away our higher levels of kindness and good will to some degree.

The difficulty is that there are things about our lives that we treat as normal that may not even be intended for us ever.  We are meant to be people filled with love and joy.  Instead, we choose to walk in some awkward form of calm and common.  Kindness, generosity, and good will seem to have their most abundant portions packed away with the decorations and December dishes.

I would like to ponder for some days the idea that what we have accepted as normal is not, but rather an almost global acceptance of a way of life for which we were never meant.  There are things we have normalized that devour joy and love in our lives.  Let us begin our journey through this new decade with the idea that we do not have to settle.  We do not have to live lives of quiet desperation or oblique sadness if we would rather choose lives of joy and love.

We are laying the foundation for a year in which we are going to learn something much more important.  For today, let us ponder that we do not have to put away joy and mirth to get through the long dark winter.  Rather, Dear Reader, we can choose to become humans who stride above the normal. Our foundation of love can lift us through the normal to be humans who carry good will, kindness, and generosity through the year.  It is in this that we can follow Christ more closely.  It is in this that we can create a new normal in a new year that makes our love and joy unassailable.  Please share your thoughts with me as I seek a higher path forged in love and humility.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Winter Transitions ~ Closing of the Year

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is cold.  I am sipping my last cup of coffee for the year.  I have closed out many of the things that need closing.  I am not a party person.  My New Year’s Eves of late have been spent quietly watching the year drift in and then retiring to a long winter’s nap.

The year has not unfolded at all as I expected.  I am not sure how the coming year will unfold at all.   I am at peace with all of that.

As I close this year I recount some losses that have grieved me.  Tonight, I will lift a glass to absent friends with the hope that their journey goes on walking a much brighter path.  I feel their absence and do not wish them back but wish I could see them.

I have improved in some things that I wished to do.  I am closer to some of my family and this is precious to me.  I have had more time with my Grandsons and that is a treasure.  Watching them grow is a beautiful experience.

The sand has slipped through the pinch.  New experiences have marked some of the days.  There has been almost enough baseball to satisfy me.  I feel a little older.  Since the end of my year is not far past the end of the actual year I mark it well.

As I write this I have my real hour glass sitting before me.  I can see all of the sand but I am focusing on the grains in the pinch.  It is hard to do so.  It takes discipline.  That, however, is how we are supposed to live; aware of the past, an eye on the future, but focused on the moment.  I have been trying to hone this over the last few months.  If one works at it one can do it.  Like all thing that matter, however, it takes discipline.

Thank you for your company this year Dear Reader.  As the New Year unfolds I will begin by looking at the difference between being led and being driven whilst still following.  Your companionship is most precious.  I hope we have many more discussions along the path next year.  The journey draws us ever onward.  Happy New Year Dear Reader.

Closing of the Year – Wendy and Lisa

If I cannot bring you comfort
Then at least I bring you hope
For nothing is more precious
Than the time we have, and so

We all must learn from small misfortunes
Count the blessings that are real
Let the Bells ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year

Let the Bells Ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year

Up on the knees of a Sergeant Major
Ride through the woods with the wind in your hair
Silver bells on a golden reindeer
As they race to the castle over there

If I cannot bring you comfort then at least I bring you hope

Now all the winter bells are ringing
Hear them echo through the snow
And the children’s' voices singing
On the streets so far below

This is a time to be together
And the truth is somewhere here
Within our love of people
At the closing of the year

We'll walk in the sun
With all of the faith
And all of the Patience
All of the way
With all of us right
And all of us saying
"No one an island"
We'll fly in the arms of time
Walk in the waves, never fall
Don't fall...

At the closing of the year...
At the closing of the year!
If I cannot bring you comfort, then at least I bring you hope
Then at least I bring you hope...

Winter Transitions ~ Dreams

Greetings Dear Reader,

We all have dreams of some kind.  I am not talking about the night dramas that play in our heads when we try to rest.  I am talking about the things upon which we pin our hopes and if brave enough our efforts.

I have some that I have begun to put hands and feet on.  For some time may have passed them by in a way this makes them unattainable.  One of the transitions that occur as we transit to the new year is we reassess our dreams.

Too often we cast aside the courage to pursue them.  We get caught up in the business and busyness of getting by instead of building our dreams.  I dare to dream of great things.  I am becoming better at working at those things and believing that I can get there.

The thing I intend to do is to do something every day to get there.  The transition to make is to build something.  Create something that is you.  If I am truly following Christ then I will find my way in his shadow.  As I hone the gifts I have and shed the things that hinder me it becomes clearer that I must awaken from the dream that keeps me from my dreams.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Winter Transitions ~ Time is Fleeting

Greetings Dear Reader,

Two years ago today I lost a friend very suddenly.  He went to work and died.  He had plans to fulfill and promises to keep.  He was only a building away from me.  I saw the ambulance and it did not occur to me that I was losing a friend.  I did not learn of it until an hour later when someone called me.

The world moves at its constant consuming pace and two more years slip through the glass.  The entire idea of time becomes more precious as the sand migrates downward.  I like Pratchett’s imagery of our lives being represented by an hour glass that will eventually run out.  It is often too late that we realize every grain matters.

As I make my winter transitions this year I realize how much time I have to pursue things that really matter.  I am becoming better at doing so.  It is still there, the wish to go back and redeem some of the time lost and not used.  That wish is also a waste of the present.

The transition to the New Year is the time marker we all share.  Starting the New Year gives us all some measure of hope.  It is also the scapegoat for our wasted time from the previous year.  Time is given to us as a gift.  I must not squander it further.  The bell will one day toll for me.

Time – Pink Floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Winter Transitions ~ Analysis

Greetings Dear Reader,

One of the things we drift into during the doldrums of the week between Christmas and the New Year is an analysis of things.  We begin to weigh the gains and losses of Christmas whether they be financial, material, social, or the scale.  We begin to think about the coming year.

Some find that they have overextended.  Some have overeaten.  Some had hopes that were realized and some had expectations that never can be so.  There are friends who walk through this time for the first time without a loved one.  I have been through this pain and it is inconsolable.  I would carry  it  for them if I could.

Whatever our situation we do some analysis over the past year and look into the new one.  We prepare for the transition with the balance of our lives waiting.  Most of us determine that this will be a better year.  Most of us do not have the courage to make is so.

What we do not analyze is what keeps us dong the same things over and over when our dreams call for us to come live differently.  As we analyze our transitions we must see the things that hinder us and determine how to dissolve the hindrance.  It may not have to be drastic and take the guillotine drop of the New Year ball.  It may be that we need to slowly change the trifles that lead to our greatness.  Sometimes we can effect great change by changing the little things.

With his back against the San Francisco traffic
On the bridge's side that faces towards the jail
Setting out to join a demographic
He hoists his first leg up over the rail

A phone call's made, police cars show up quickly
The sergeant slams his passenger door
He says, "Hey son why don't you talk through this with me?
Just tell me what you're doing it for."

"Oh, it's a little bit of everything
It's the mountains, it's the fog
It's the news at six o'clock
It's the death of my first dog."

"It's the angels up above me
It's the song that they don't sing
It's a little bit of everything."

There's an older man who stands in a buffet line,
He is smiling and he's holding out his plate,
And the further he looks back into his timeline
That hard road always led him to today,

Making up for when his bright future had left him
Making up for the fact his only son is gone,
And letting everything out once, his server asks him
"Have you figured out yet, what it is you want?"

I want a little bit of everything
The biscuits and the beans
Whatever helps me to forget about
The things that brought me to my knees

So pile on those mashed potatoes
And an extra chicken wing
I'm having a little bit of everything

Somewhere a pretty girl is writing invitations
To a wedding she has scheduled for the fall
Her man says, "Baby, can I make an observation?
You don't seem to be having any fun at all."

She said, "You just worry about your groomsmen and your shirt-size
And rest assured that this is making me feel good."
I think that love is so much easier than you realize
If you can give yourself to someone, then you should

'Cause it's a little bit of everything
The way you joke, the way you ache,
It is getting up before you,
So I could watch you as you wake.

So on that day in late September,
It's not some stupid little ring,
I'm getting a little bit of everything.

Oh, it's a little bit of everything
It's the matador and the bull
It's the suggested daily dosage
It's the red moon when it's full.

All these psychics and these doctors
They're alright and they're all wrong,
It's like trying to make out every word
When they should simply hum along

It's not some message written in the dark
Or some truth that no one's seen
It's a little bit of everything.

Winter Transitions ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

For some Christmas is “over”.  Things may be put away.  Some will tell you it is over if you are dressed in Christmas attire or humming a Christmas hymn.  I hold onto the celebration until Epiphany.  I hold onto Christmas all year long.

Wherever you land on the spectrum there are transitions this week.  The changes come whether we wish them or not.  Some transitions are locked into our method or marking time.  Some are just habitual because of tradition or convenience.

The transitions can change things around us or even change us.  We all make them.  We do not all or always embrace them.  Change and transition is still the constant in our lives.

Walk with me a bit as I examine the transitions that are common.  There will be some positive notes and painful reminders.  The thing that I hope never transitions is the comfort of your company in the journey Dear Reader.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Loving What We Will Become ~ What Brought Us Here

Greetings Dear Reader,

When we fail to love what others become through the years we must examine ourselves. It is not that we must love things that are inherently wrong or allow abuses.  It is that in the people we love we see their good less and their faults more.

This error can be fought by considering what brought them to where they are.  Who is the person we began to love?  Where have they gone?  What of that person can we love and revive?  What brought them to this person they have become?  What part did I play in that becoming?

When I see only the faults I lack understanding.   We forget that we need not fully understand to be understanding.   I must seek to understand and love whilst seeking it.  We fail at the command to love first.  When I fail to love first I fail to the potential.  I fail to see the possible.

Beyond that I am required, no matter what to love what they become.  There is no caveat to that.  This applies not only to marriage but to parenting, it applies to friends, neighbors, and any that we interact with.  My responsibility is to be the one who loves no matter what the cost.

What brought the person to who he or she is now?  How can I mitigate the pain?  How can extend my heart past the defenses?  What can I do so that the love of Christ crushes all barriers?  If I am unwilling to ask these questions and live out the answers then I declare that I am unwilling to love.  This is not allowed.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn
