Greetings Dear Reader,
I can hear some of you pondering the title. Is that the number of emails he has gotten
praising his Christmas book, The
Twelve Tales of Christmas? Perhaps
that is how many speaking invitations he has for the coming year. Maybe, those are how many people asked
questions about his BLOG.
Sadly, it is none of these.
I would welcome any and all of those.
That number, however, is the highest number of emails waiting for me
upon return from a vacation. This was
many years ago and I hope to never eclipse it unless it is one of the aforementioned
situations. In the job that supports me
currently, I do hear others returning from holiday talking about the vast
number of emails through which they must wade.
This is part of getting back to a normal that I feel is more abnormal
every day.
I am thankful for the work I have that provides income until
I can make my living from writing alone.
I believe, more and more, that we have constructed a world where we work
for money and get very little joy out of it.
I know that my “money job” makes a difference in the lives of others and
provides for my needs. I do believe that
were I not pursuing the life to which I am called that I would be miserable.
The normal we have created of trading life for money so that
we can squeeze in some leisure and some things is not satisfying. So many people are trading five days for two. Once they reach the two, they have nothing
left with which to enjoy it. I work with
people who spend their two days off still working. These are good people doing good work but
they always seem tired.
I would say that if we are to find lives that fulfill us, we
must see what it is that gives us joy and pursue it. I am not saying to be irresponsible. I am suggesting that we can construct lives
where instead of trading our time for crumbs of leisure, we build towards
finding our way in the things that ignite and inspire us.
I have a friend who is a construction worker. He goes from site to site preparing it for
the laying of a foundation. He works
with a small crew for a large company.
He loves what he does, therefore, not feeling spent and tired at the end
of the workweek he also chases his dreams.
If you visit his home though, he will show you his workshop where he crafts
beautiful cutting boards and plaques from hardwood. He has begun going to trade fairs on the
weekends and will soon eclipse the money he makes preparing foundations with
the art he enjoys. He builds every
single day toward the normal he wishes.
This is what we all must do, Dear Reader. We must find that which we love and pursue
it. My Grandfather used to often say, “Do
what you love and the money will come.” If
we are going to create a new normal, we must reject that we have to do the
uninspiring with our lives. I think that
part of the great disquiet we carry is when we reject the idea that there must be
something more. There is. It calls to us and we grow weary from
resisting it.
I am taking steps to pursue this life with greater energy and
speed. I see the turn of the tide toward
what I love being all that I do in life.
It takes courage, work, and determination but it is possible
always. Before too much of the new decade
slips through the glass, we must follow on toward that which we are called to
become. We can encourage each other along
the way and so, make the journey lighter.
The
Great Adventure – Steven Curtis Chapman
Saddle up your horses!
Started out this morning in the usual way
Chasing thoughts inside my head
I thought I had to do today
Another time around the circle
Try to make it better than the last
I opened up the Bible
And I read about me
Said I'd been a prisoner
And God's Grace had set me free
And somewhere between the pages
It hit me like a lightning bolt
I saw a big frontier in front of me
And I heard somebody say let's go
Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa
This is the great adventure
So come on, get ready for the ride of your life
Gonna leave long faced religion
In a cloud of dust behind
And discover all the new horizons
Just waiting to be explored
This is what we were created for, yeah
Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the Glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa
This is the great adventure
We'll travel on, over mountains so high
We'll go through valleys below
Still, through it all we'll find that
This is the greatest journey
That the human heart will ever see
The love of God will take us far
Beyond our wildest dreams
So, saddle up your horses
Let’s get ready to ride
Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Saddle up your horses
We've got a trail to blaze (we've got a trail, we've got a
trail to blaze)
Through the wild blue yonder of God's Amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the Glorious unknown
This is the life like no other whoa, whoa
This is the great adventure
Saddle up, saddle up your horses
Wishing you joy in the journey,
