Second Thoughts ~ Eevee Evolutions

Greetings Dear Reader,

This weekend was the Community Event for Pokémon Go.  It was a six-hour event spread over two three-hour times.  The challenge was to catch as many Eevee as possible and especially the special “shiny” ones.

I had the good company of my friend Kelly on the first day.  We had a successful hunt yesterday.  Today, however, the folks who were going to join me had to do other things and I went it alone.  The venue I chose for my hunt was one that affords both comfort and opportunity.  I was alone but in a vast crowd of my tribe.

There happened to be a comic book convention in the same building where I set up my Pokémon blind.  The comic convention was designed as a family event to introduce children to comics.  This resulted in a stream of costumed children filing by as I was catching Eevee.  Many of them stopped to see what I was up to.  I was please to have conversations with small versions of Wonder Woman, Batman, Spider Man, Batgirl, the odd wizard, and a few Pokémon characters.

The prize moment for me was when a wee lass dressed as an Eevee ran up to me very excited.  She whispered loudly, “I will let you catch me as long as you don’t crush me to candy or evolve me to a Jolteon.  They are just too spikey.”

I pretended to toss a ball and she pretended to be caught.  Her parents watched bemused.  Small children free of inhibition touch my heart in a unique way.  I promised to not evolve her or crush her to candy.  She went on her way not knowing how much she salved the deep loneliness with which I struggle today.

A silly game and the introduction of children to comics is not much taken by itself.  If, however, we consider the way in which both events can build community from strangers there may be something more there of value.  If I keep thinking beyond the obvious I see how aid came unknown when I needed it.  That is a lesson in faith that is no small thing.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – Drooling Stinkweed and Others

Greetings Dear Reader,

Fuzzy Peacock
Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

Balloon Bunny
After the last couple of days I need a little something to ease my mind with laughter.  Since the release of the second wave of critters for Pokémon Go I have decided to replace some of the names with what I think the creatures are.  I have included pictures for the confused.

From the original series launched last May I have noticed a vast increase in the number of Fuzzy Peacocks.  They are easy enough to catch.  They evolve into the Fuzzy Golden Peacock and seem desired by many.

Drooling Stinkweed
I also found the Balloon Bunny to be plentiful.  I guess you want
those so you can make the big Balloon Bunny and use him to bounce off other critters.

One of the more unpleasant looking first gen critters is Drooling Stinkweed.  He evolves from a cute little plant and turns into a fairly nice looking large flower.  The middle form, however, is repulsive to me.

Angry Bird
In the new generation that was released last month there is an Angry Bird who evolves into a larger Razor Blade Bird.  It seems that this is the Pidgy or Spearrow of the group.  He looks mad and hops around a bit but otherwise seems useless.

Sad Glider Bunny
The most common of the new lot so far is the Sad Glider Bunny.  Every time I see one I want to sign him up for therapy and call suicide prevention.   He evolves into one of my favorites, the Furret if he can survive his obvious depression.

I realize that this is a lark (not one of the new Pokémon) but it was relaxing for me and a glimpse into my craziness Dear Reader.  Let me know if you got a laugh.  You deserve it.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts – Pokémon is Going

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

Last month I dipped my toe into the river of movement that is the new game Pokémon Go.  I find it very entertaining but there is more.  I have walked more in the last month than I the last six combined.  I have found something far more valuable.

I found a place where there are three PokeStops that are in close proximity to each other.  It is in a small park with easy access to parking by a beautiful lake.  I went there first by myself and then took my Daughter there on another occasion.

One of the residents of the street made it clear that I was not welcome.  He really has no say as it is a public park and public street.  He just happens to be blessed or cursed depending on one’s perspective to live across the street.

The thing that impresses me most is that this small park has evolved a small community out of complete strangers.  People, most of them younger than me drift in and out of the park chasing Squirtels and   Pidgies.   They greet each other.  They chat and share information.  There is the occasional geeky braggart who has the lowdown on everything Pokémon Go.

The diversity of this group is outstanding.  What is more outstanding is their care for the park.  After six visits, one for an entire afternoon (don’t judge me) there is not litter in the park.  The people there to catch invisible creatures on their phones pick up the real trash.  They are polite to each other.  They are even considerate toward the guy who thinks he owns the park.

I wish those who follow Christ could learn the lessons available in this little Pokémon Park.  We can do so much better at loving and accepting each other.  We can do so much better at treating each other and the environment with kindness and respect.  If we don’t how will we ever catch ‘em all?

Second Thoughts – Pokémon Go

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

If you live under a rock or somewhere where there is no internet you may not have heard of Pokémon Go.  My Grandsons seem to enjoy playing it with their dad.  I realized as they explained it that it was a game that could motivate me to exercise more.

I tried it this weekend.  You see I like walk but not simply for exercise.  This got me to walk in search of something.  It motivated me to travel from point to point playing a game.  I walked over two miles without realizing it.

I also shared the game with someone who had asked me to try it.  That made it twice the fun. I was able to inject some fun into someone else’s day.   It also prepared me to try and build an adventure for my Grandsons.

There are some simple things of which one should take heed.

Watch where you are walking
Watch your data consumption
Take along a spare charger or battery
Be respectful of others using the space
HAVE FUN

There is more I could say but really I just wanted to share my new discovery.
