Second Thoughts ~ The Wandering Traveler

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you, Dear Reader.

In an odd turn of events I have picked up friends or family at the airport three of the last four weekends.  Unlike many this airport has very cheap parking and a comfortable waiting area for meeting arrivals.  One of the perks is that one can see the only escalators that service the entry and exit area for the terminals.

So it was that two weeks ago I sat waiting in the early morning for a flight that was on time.  As I took up a seat in the waiting area, I chose the one the furthest to the left facing the terminals.  I could clearly see the doorway out of the terminals and the stairs framed by up and down escalators.  A crew had cordoned off the down escalator with a yellow barrier whilst they worked at repairs on it.

My friend’s flight was not due for fifteen minutes so I got comfortable and waited.  The airport and human nature combined to offer me some excellent entertainment.   As passengers exited the terminal of another flight I watched them approach the stairs and escalators.  There was a clear delineation of presence of mind and mindfulness in their actions.

The first group were those that either saw that the escalator was unavailable and chose the stairs or were going for the stairs as a matter of course.  The second group consisted of those who approached the escalator, saw it was out of order, and adjusted to the stairs or in one case the elevator. Then, there was a third group.

About half a dozen people individually did the same thing over a period of fifteen minutes.  Each would approach the down escalator and stop at the barricade that informed one that is was under repair.  Then he (2) or she (5) would walk past the stairs to the up escalator.  Each person stared for a moment at the open escalator moving in a direction opposite to his or her current need.  There were then the following responses:

  • Two immediately chose the wide staircase between the two escalators
  • One person turned and went to the elevator behind him.
  • Three people checked their phones, walked back to the down escalator, returned to the up escalator, and then chose the stairs.
  • The last individual walked back and forth between the escalators four times pulling her bag and checking her phone. Finally stopping at the out of order down escalator, young lady queries one of the workers as to when the repairs will be done.

The worker informs her that it is an “all day” job.  She responds with a wail, “But I have to get down to get a cab.”  The worker looks at her confused for a moment and then points toward the stairs before going back to work.  Still bewildered the young lady walks back and forth one more time before dragging herself and her luggage down the moving up escalator.

After reaching the bottom she heads toward the exit and stops short of the automatic doors that lead outside.  She turns around and looks back at the closed down escalator and mutters, “well it looks just fine from this end.”

I am not sure what particular challenge kept her from using the stairs or the elevator.  There could be many reasons why she did not grasp the simple solution or chose not to use it.  From the outside looking at her actions what I gained was some entertainment and little perspective.

I often get so focused on what I think should be unfolding that I do not leave my mind room to adjust to changes.  I must be certain that I am in the moment enough to see what is going on around me and aware enough to adjust.  The journey is made up of moments.  I must be in them fully even if I have to change my path to do so.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

I Can Only Imagine ~ Love

Greetings Dear Reader,

Yesterday I spoke about the love between father and son.  I talked also about the love that the Father has for us that he would send his Son to redeem us.  It goes further than that.

The Father bases everything on love.  It was out of love that he found a way to satisfy his justice and righteousness without destroying us.  It is love that motivated him to create a way for us to be rescued from our wanderings.  All of the law and the prophets are supposed to be founded in love.

But wait, there is more.  You see it is enough that the Father rescues us from our failings.  He goes further.  He builds in us the ability to love.  He gives us the command to love as our prime mover.  He allows us to be a part of the greatest thing that there is and wants us to share it in purity without guile.

I have read so many reports of those who were thought dead and returned.  The most significant thing is that so many report the depth and expanse of the love felt.  Again, we see that love is a predominant experience with God.

If we accept this then we can begin to truly change the world.  If we choose individually and collectively to act out of love for others then we find the resources to meet the needs of others.  We will be moved to combat poverty, hunger, and injustice.  We will not argue over supplying health care for those in need.

If we were to embrace the love that we are supposed to live we could change the world.  Like the depth of the love that the Father has for us, we have no idea how boundless love can be if embraced.  The impact that I can have if I do this in all things could be vast.  The impact if we all do, I can only imagine.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

I Can Only Imagine ~ Father and Son

Greetings Dear Reader,

With the exception of Holy Week and Christmas my posts are rarely planned more than a week in advance.  I want the writing to be an honest reflection of my current journey with Christ.  This allows for life to interact with the thinking I am processing.

This happened in an interesting juxtaposition yesterday.  My younger Son called to chat and we began talking about the real essence of the Gospel.  His intelligence and ability to articulate things is beautiful.

It put me in mind of what I imagine it must have been like for the Father to part with the Son.  I love my Sons dearly.  Being away from them is always difficult for me.  Enjoying things with them keeps me spirited and alive.  It brings me back to thinking about the relationship between the Father and the Son.

In case you do not see the understanding of God behind it, the Father and Son are two manifestations of one God.  They have been that way always.  They act in harmony and always share everything.  They created the world together.  They saw the thing that was good unfold into being not good.

Then the plan came into reality.  In the fullness of time the Son departed from the Father to live with us for a space.  He showed us how to live out love for the Father and for each other.  Then what is arguably the darkest moment of all history came.  The Father allowed the weight of all wrong that will ever be done to rest on his Son so that we could be redeemed.

I cannot imagine sacrificing my Sons for anyone.  What pain it must be to see your Son falsely accused and condemned, beaten and killed by the very people he came to rescue.  For years we have heaped all manner of conditions on top of this act.  We have added baggage to the Gospel and been bad examples.

It really is this simple:  The Father allowed the sacrifice of his Son to redeem us from our own failures.  All he asks of us is that we accept this sacrifice by faith.  All he wants is for us to love him and each other.  What it felt like to give so much I cannot understand.  He did it knowing he would still have people malign and reject him.  All he asks that we act out of love and we reject and abuse him further.  How that hurts, I can only imagine.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

I Can Only Imagine ~ The Departed

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have mentioned that there are those who have already reached the end of this journey who I long to see again.  The first that come to mind are my Grandfather, my Sister, and my Daughter.  There are others.  Other family members that have gone on and absent friends.

This is one of those areas where we do not know what really happens.  Death is not the end.  To die is to be directly present with the Father.  We do know that.  We know that things will not get really rolling until Jesus returns to make all things good again.

It is not given to us what the departed are doing whilst waiting for things to play out.  I do not think we will be sitting around singing endless praises for all eternity.  The Father is just too creative for that.  We will be able to do this if it is what we wish.  Remember, however, that even in Eden we had work to do by tending the Garden.

Anyone telling you that they have it all worked out is mistaken.  I do not think that they watch us.  There is no sorrow there and I know when I fail it would bring sorrow to my family.  I am sure there is much more about which I have no idea.

I know that whatever the Father has in store for us it will be amazing.  My Grandfather used to talk with me about it often.  He would also say he did not know what Jesus was up to but he looked at it this way:  If God made such a beautiful world as ours in seven days, then I needed to consider the time.   Jesus said he was going to prepare a place for us and he has been working on it for 2000 years.  Let that sink in for a bit.  I can only imagine.

I Can Only Imagine ~ That Undiscovered Country

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is one of those questions that plagues us almost as soon as we begin to reason.  What happens when we die?  I am not foolish enough to attempt to answer it.  I know that we have specific promises.  None of them, however, maps out the forever part of things.

As I mentioned yesterday, I know that it will be far beyond anything we can imagine.  That is part of the promise.  That is not enough for some people.  I simply try to imagine more beautiful things every time I think about it.

Then there are the people who think they know.  They describe cities and mansions.  Some even go so far as to build a system of merits, rewards, and crowns based on minimal evidence and grand conjecture.  None of this is beneficial.  We are not supposed to know the whole story.  We are supposed to follow Christ home in faith.

We are on a journey of discovery.  We are following someone who knows the answers and holds out love and hope for us.  We are not promised all the answers until we get home.  We are promised home.  We are promised to know as deeply as we are known.

As a ground rule for this discussion I promise not to offer anything as an answer that is not guaranteed by Jesus.  The point is that we will be with him.  Faith will no longer be necessary.  Just typing that brings joyful tears to my eyes.  Even though I find the faith part of following easy, I long for the time when it is no longer required.

Hope will not be a part of things any more either.  Our hope of home, peace, and love will be realized.  The world will be good again.  Things will be as they are supposed to be for us.

The point of an undiscovered country to journey there to discover it.  There is joy in that journey but it is nothing compared to what will be when we arrive.  When I get world weary I ponder this.  Not in a negative or destructive way, but in a hopeful, faithful, positive vein I ponder what Christ is leading us to.   How beautiful and fulfilling will it be?  I can only imagine.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

I Can Only Imagine ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Yesterday my Daughter took me to see I Can Only Imagine, the movie about Bart Millard, the writer of the song by the same name.  I have included the song below.  I am still sorting out all the things it brought up in me.

As I walk through memories of my birth father and his interactions in my life I know that I have forgiven him but a great deal of pain is still there.  The movie brought up so much that is difficult to ponder.  That part I will get back to before this part of the journey is complete.

The other thinking that the movie stirred in me was that of what comes next.  As it is my focus to love God with all that I am I consider what Paul told the Corinthians.  “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ the things God has prepared for those who love him.”

I view this as a challenge.  I try to imagine what the Father has in store for us.  What can be on the horizon?  Just having my faith become sight seems like enough.  The potential of reunion with my Grandfather, my Sister, and my Daughter is the kind of joy that I dream about.

Give this song a listen and let us walk together for a bit concerning the things that we can only imagine.  Let us do it with the understanding that the better we imagine the better it will be.  Here is my reasoning on this.  If he is going to do better than we imagine, then the better we imagine the better it gets. As always, your thoughts and questions are invaluable to me.

I Can Only Imagine – Mercy Me

I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk, by your side
I can only imagine what my eyes will see
When you face is before me
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

Surrounded by You glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus
Or in awe of You be still
Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

I can only imagine when that day comes
When I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine when all I would do is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine hey ya ah

Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine hey ya ah
I can only imagine yeah yeah
I can only imagine
I can only imagine ey ey ey
I can only imagine
I can only imagine when all I will do
Is forever, forever worship You
I can only imagine

…and Historical Smoking

Greetings Dear Reader,

Yesterday the movie Chappaquiddick premiered across the country.  It is a historical take on the Ted Kennedy incident from 1969.  I do not know if I care to see the film or not.  I am disturbed by something.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) issued the following in rating the film.  “Rated PG-13 for thematic material, disturbing images, some strong language, and historical smoking”.  It is the historical smoking bit that disturbs me.  Do we not all know that people smoke?  Do we not all know that they did so in the past in public places, work places, and pretty much anywhere one wished?

Perhaps this is a new kind of safe space to protect those who are offended by the idea of anyone anywhere smoking ever.  It may be a way for the MPAA to further manipulate the movie industry to bend to their will.  I get the warning on the pack of cigarettes.  I get that smoking is dangerous.

What disturbs me is the level of sex, violence, drugs, and greed that fill the screen and there are those who think “historical smoking” is an issue.  What do we do then with Gandalf and Bilbo blowing smoke rings?   We may need to reevaluate the entire movie rating system.

We may need to warn that there are sugar soft-drinks in films.  Perhaps scenes where people are eating candy and cake need a warning too.  There may need to be posts that people are driving non-electric vehicles.  Should Wonder Woman have had a historical polluting warning?

We can perhaps make a list of “situations” such as high cholesterol, intense leather wearing, and potential political incorrectness for those who might be traumatized.    IMDB provides a lovely parental guide page for movies.   Perhaps they can provide another one for the perpetually offended among us.

I care about the sensibilities of others.  I work hard not to offend when I speak of my beliefs.  I am, however, completely finished with catering to those who see being personally offended as a way to manipulate society to their will.

People do things we do not like. If I ranted about everything I dislike my posts would be much longer.  Here is the gist for me.  I hear my faith bashed and my beliefs disrespected in our culture almost daily.  My response is to do my best to live a life of love and respect for others even when they mock, ridicule, and disrespect the God I love.  I also think that it is good to know that the “smoke filled room” was a real thing and that we do not need to fear it nearly as much as what often comes out of it.

Memories and Forgiveness ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

We will have memories that harm us.  That is unavoidable if we are to live among humans.  Those memories can be mitigated and tamed if we work at it.  They can be managed even if it takes time and effort to do so.

What we must do is forgive and keep forgiving if necessary.  Feeling the feelings associated with the things that caused us pain does not mean we have not forgiven.  It may be that the memories launch new anger and even hatred.  We must forgive again.

There are things in my past that used to immediately launch fear and pain the moment I thought of them.  There is still sadness there but no longer anger and fear.  Every time it occurs I remind myself that the person who harmed me is forgiven and that I must forgive him anew if necessary.

I must also be sure that when someone approaches me for forgiveness that I am kind and compassionate.  I must forgive.  I must be good to the person.  I do not have to trust or put myself in danger but I must lovingly forgive.

It is in this that we find the key to our own healing.  We also need forgiveness for things.  They may not be great things but we need forgiveness.  It is in forgiving that we see that we are also forgiven.  It is in this forgiving that we see the needs of others for love and compassion.

I must always forgive, even when I must make myself do it.  I must focus on love and forgiveness for others so that I do not become bitter.  I must focus on it so that I remember how I am in daily need of forgiveness.  When we were taught how to pray the conditional was this:  Forgive our trespass as we forgive those who trespass against us.  That alone should be enough motivation for me.

Second Thoughts ~ Fish Feet

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you, Dear Reader.

Recently I was sitting in an old theatre whilst my Daughter browsed jewelry at a in-theatre flea market.  Sitting in front of me was a three-year-old girl with her grandmother.  They were waiting for her dad.  She turned around backwards in her chair, held up a crisp, and looked me in the eye.

She spoke with great authority, “I am Violet.  I am three.  Fish DO have feet.  I am eating Dori’s toes!”

My first thought was that if this is true then it makes the entire premise of The Little Mermaid invalid.  Then I thought about how to explain that to Violet.   Before I could further pursue the exchange, my Daughter returned from her jewelry perusal.  I tried to explain the conversation to her but failed.

I would have you ponder with me a bit Dear Reader.  This wee girl had the good sense to not only make a pun but to share it with me.  This is one of the reasons that I always listen to small children when they wish to speak to me.  They have so much to share that can enrich our world.

It would be wonderful to have more time to do this.  I also find that they tolerate my puns much more willingly.  Now I just need to figure out the real Little Mermaid premise.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Memories and Forgiveness ~ Toxic People

Greetings Dear Reader,

People will come into our lives or may even be a part of the reason we are alive who are toxic.  Their lives are so centered on self and strife that they are passively or worse actively dangerous to others.  The danger may be emotional, physical, or both.  A balance we must find is in forgiving these individuals and protecting ourselves from harm.

I have a person like this in my life.  I genuinely love this person.  I would like it if we could be closer.  There are many great qualities about this human.  This person is also extremely narcissistic and manipulative.  This individual has been this way for years and refuses to see it or address it.  The problems are misunderstandings, someone else’s fault, or allowable in this particular case.

I have truly attempted to work things out with this person.  I have seen the places in my life that needed improvement relative to these areas and work to change.  This person, however, has been shown how the actions taken damage others and refuses to do differently.

It is a tough tightrope to walk between forgiveness and choosing to distance oneself from another human.  I have had to make this choice for my own safety and to prevent furthering this individual’s damage.  This person thinks that I hate him/her.  That is not the case.  I love him/her.  I also have seen how damaging proximity is for me and others.

The choice of social distance is the only thing that seems to work to protect me.  It saddens me.  It saddens me more that this person is cut off from good things due to a refusal to see the depth of his/her difficulties.  How then do I know that I have forgiven?

I know because it is not anger or bitterness that is in me.  It is compassion and a refusal to enable.  It is love and prayer for this person to see the truth before it is too late.  It is a willingness to try again if change is seen.  It is my commitment to forgive every day if necessary.

I do not want to stop without saying that there was a time in my life where I was like this as well.  A combination of nature and nurture taught me to be this way.  My children and my counselor helped me see the path I was walking.  Through the grace of God, I work daily to no longer be self-serving.  This too is why I know that I have forginess and love for others.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
