The Path of Peace ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

It seems that we have forgotten how to work for peace, peacefully.  I am surprised how quickly those who are to turn the other cheek instead work to justify their violence.  Whether it is speech or action, we speak of hatred and killing.

I have heard both sides of the salient issues talk of violence toward the other.  I hear those who are supposed to be setting the example of love and kindness make demeaning jokes about those who need that love to overcome their anger and hurt.  There can be no peace when Christ-followers fail to love and Jesus loves.

It really does not matter what our opposition does.  We are supposed to respond with love and kindness. We are required to always draw a circle to take in others.  We are to work for peace through caring for others no matter what their affiliation.  The journey home is difficult enough without making things harder.  The quest for peace must be couched in my determination to respond to everything with love, grace, and peace.

As we journey on to the next thing, Dear Reader, I hope to do so with an eye toward the peaceful solution to everything.  For those who hate, for any reason.  I offer you an ear, some understanding, and love that does not require you to give up anything to be loved.  For me, the path of peace is refusing to be offended for the sake of my pride and position.  It is making sure that I set love for others as my primary focus.  The journey home will end in peace.  Perhaps we can work at it now to make the transition easier.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ Why Prayer Matters

Greetings Dear Reader,

I spent the day yesterday with my good friend and avid supporter, Adam.  We talked most of the day about the challenge of living out our love of the Father and loving other humans in a practical way.  We discussed family, friends, and churches at length.

The talk consistently returned to the subject of love for others as a way of loving the Father.  It also reminded me that I must make prayer for guidance and strength from the Father a constant conversation.  I spent time pondering how much I need to ramp up my prayer and practice of loving others no matter who they are as part of my faith and following,

I was reminded of the song that a dear friend shared with me a couple of weeks ago as part of his journey to grow closer to Christ.  His desire is to live out this song as well as asking the Father for the things in it.  I leave it with you, Dear Reader as a part of our Sunday Morning.  I am headed down the road again today and carry you with me always.

The Prayer – Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli

I pray you’ll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

I pray we’ll find your light, and hold it in our hearts
When stars go out each night, remind us where you are
Let this be our prayer when shadows fill our day
Help us find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

A world where pain and sorrow will be ended
And every heart that’s broken will be mended
And we’ll remember we are all God’s children
Reaching out to touch you
Reaching to the sky

We ask that life be kind, and watch us from above
We hope each soul will find another soul to love
Let this be our prayer, just like every child
Who needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
Needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ The New Normal

Greetings Dear Reader,

We keep hearing about the new normal that is rising in our culture.  I think that if we are going to abandon things, we must know that to which are we going to make normal.  I think that we need to also ask if what we seek is an honest product of our methods for getting there.

It could be that we have forgotten that only love yields love.  I hear so much hatred from conservatives and progressives regarding each other that it saddens me.  Hatred never yields love. It never yields peace but we convince ourselves that it does. We want our new normal and convince ourselves that any method of getting there is acceptable.  We are willing to hate in order to get it,

As long as we hate those who oppose us, we cannot build a normal that is free, loving, and sustainable.  We are unable to birth peace through hatred and violence.  It could be that some have forgotten this and that some have never learned it.  Still, the division is so great in our society that we have not tried to fix it through the things we all value,

I would submit that everyone needs to begin by loving others from the heart.  We need to see that we all want peace and freedom.  We need to also admit that we want that defined by our own creed and not to include theirs.  I want every human to embrace Jesus and follow him.  I am not willing to deny their needs and freedom to choose to get that desire met.

The hard and narrow path to walk is to give others the freedom necessary to this thinking and realize that they may still do horrible things.  The deeper truth is that they will do horrible things and call them good.  The path to peace is to love so deeply and consistently that evil makes itself evident.  It is our love and kindness that must radiate to others.  Our righteousness and doctrine will need to be what we carry and not what we insist others adopt.

I must make others remember what it is like to be loved.  I must push them to the place where love is what they want.  That push itself must come from our demonstrated love as well.  Our words only matter when others feel so loved that they insist to know from whence we acquire that love.  We can then stir the memory or create the knowledge that Christ loves them to a depth that cannot be measured by our minds.  Only then, Dear Reader should we speak of the difference from the selfish methods we all pursue to that path of peace Jesus asks us to walk.  Only then can we create a normal that works for everyone.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ The Primary Choice

Greetings Dear Reader,

Today is one of those days that is very important to me.  My younger Son, Bezel, marks another journey around the sun.  I will get to see him later to celebrate him.  I have been pondering what it is in him that is so amazing.

He and I do not agree on all matters of faith and following but the thing that matters most, he gets.  He understands and practices that we must always deal with every human from a perspective of love.  Even though my failures, he shows compassion and love for me.  We have talked through my difficulties and it has brought us closer.

I see his compassion for anyone who is struggling.  I watch his care for the needs of others.   I see his ability to approach others, even those he sees a wrong, with love and respect.  I think that his light and influence do much to draw others to this same thinking,

His life furthers my thinking that the path to peace is always through love.  Even when we are wrong, we can work our way through it with love and kindness.  We can be the kind of people who love first, Dear Reader.  I am honoring my Son, Bezel, and the Father by working in every moment to be that man.  I am thankful for the love of my Son and his life, happy birthday, Son.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ Dried Up Wells

Greetings Dear Reader,

The home I had before I lived alone was over one hundred years old.  Its water source was a well.  That water was the second-best water source I have ever experienced.  I commented to a colleague once that my well water was sweet and he was skeptical.  I brought him a gallon of it and he agreed.

The idea of well water is always pleasant to me.  I have only once gotten to reel up a bucket dropped in a real well.  That too was memorable water.  That same well dried up a few years later and the owner explained that the water table beneath his land had shifted during an earthquake.  The idea that he no longer had his water source concerned me.  He reassured me that he had a team coming to drill him a new well.  Still, his rustic stone well with the little birch roof and bucket hoist became an unused decoration.  His spouse filled the bucket with flowers that draped over the side of the well.  It is lovely but not the source of life-giving water it once was.

When I try to replace my love of Christ with anything, I am trying to drink from a dry well.  When any love distracts me from loving the Father with all that I am, that is me worshiping an idol.  The things that replace our faith and faithfulness are modern-day graven images to the gods of entertainment, greed, and desire.  We drink from these wells and wonder why we are not at peace, why we are not satisfied, and why we still thirst.

Jesus says that he is the water of life.  He reminds us that all our satisfaction can be found in him.  We look for it elsewhere.  We struggle against the truth and replace other things for love of the Father.  I must only find my delight in the Father and following the Son.  I must not place anything else in the cup of Christ.  Only through this can I hope to journey well.  Only in this water will my thirst and yours be satisfied, Dear Reader.

Dried Up Well – Mustard Seed Faith

All through this life
You wander here and there
Looking for something anything someplace where people care
You search for meaning in a dark and dying world
You get no smiles except from those you know so well
And it's so hard
To even tell
You're trying to drink
From a dried-up well!!

And through the years
The many roads you take
The many dreams you had the life you tried to make
The precious moments the suffering and the pain
The many times your happiness became tears that fell like rain
And the emptiness you feel inside
Is like a bird
That that hasn't learned to fly!

And now a door
Opens wide for you
The door is Jesus
Won't you come and walk on through?
His living waters will fill your dried up well
And overflow it with a love that you can tell is the answer you're looking for
All you dream of
And so much more!

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ When God is Silent

Greetings Dear Reader,

When I first arrived back in the North Georgia Mountains, I was very broken.  It was during this time that a song surfaced that carried me through those first few months as I confronted who I was and who I wished to become.  To me, the Father had been silent for some time.  I had no internal peace and those who loved me had gone to war with me.

To be clear, their complaints were merited.  I had refused to see the depth of my failures and the length of my distance in following Christ with my whole heart.  As my life fell apart around me, it seemed that the Father was silent.  In truth, however, he was speaking and I did not like what he was saying.  He was calling my name and I was refusing to hear it.

I think that pride acts like earplugs. We cannot hear when we are being warned or even clearly told that we are no longer on the path to peace.  We build a path that may look or feel similar to that of following in faith and humility.  We convince ourselves that we are carrying love and peace with us.  What we are doing is growing further and further from who we are meant to be and hurting those we love in the process.

When the Father seems to be silent, we need to listen harder.  I know that I find that silence more tolerable now than I ever have.  I use it better and it no longer harms me.  It is the silence of God that draws me closer to him instead of me filling it with noise that means nothing.  We need to recall that there is a truth.  God is never silent.

The world sings to us of his presence and power all the time.  It is always our ears and never God’s voice that is the problem.  We must become better listeners if we are to remain on the path of peace.  Job reminds us that the Father’s mind is fixed on us.  He constantly thinks of each of us.

If we are to remain on the path of peace, we must draw closer to Christ when he seems silent.  We must listen without interference.  I must remember those lessons I have learned about listening and about silence.  I must ignore those who like I used to, pretend that everything is fine.  We are not fine, Dear Reader.  We are not OK.  We will be but we have a way to go to get there.  We must listen, hear, and help each other when we are weak.  I am thankful for your company.

The Silence Of God – Michael Card

It's enough to drive a man crazy; it'll break a man's faith
It's enough to make him wonder if he's ever been sane
When he's bleating for comfort from Thy staff and Thy rod
And the heaven's only answer is the silence of God

It'll shake a man's timbers when he loses his heart
When he has to remember what broke him apart
This yoke may be easy, but this burden is not
When the crying fields are frozen by the silence of God

But when you have to listen to the voices of the mob
Who are reeling in the throes of all the happiness they've got
When they tell you all their troubles have been nailed up to that cross
Then what about the times when even followers get lost?
'Cause we all get lost sometimes...

There's a statue of Jesus on a monastery knoll
In the hills of Kentucky, all quiet and cold
He's kneeling in the garden, as silent as a stone
All His friends are sleeping and He's weeping all alone

And the man of all sorrows, he never forgot
What sorrow is carried by the hearts that he bought
So, when the questions dissolve into the silence of God
The aching may remain, but the breaking does not
The aching may remain, but the breaking does not
In the holy, lonesome echo of the silence of God

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ Make me an Instrument

Greetings Dear Reader,

There exists a piece of music that is my favorite in all the strains of melody I have ever heard.  It has no lyrics and is a full six minutes of beauty and delight.  I will leave a link for you so that you can carry this loveliness with you as well.  The Inner Light by Jerry Goldsmith; enjoy it and use it to calm your soul.

For me, that piece of music is the answer when I am losing my piece.  During times of great trial or distress, I have slept with it playing over and over.  Those instruments are used to create peace in me.   They calm my spirit and soothe the beast within.

As I listen, I often recite the Prayer of Saint Francis.  We cannot prove that it was written by him but the truth is still there.  I wrote about this at length some years ago.  You can find that here.  The first line is my focus today, “Lord make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred let me sew love.”

The picture with my blog today is one of a statue of Saint Francis.  He would make it clear that African American lives do matter if he were here.   I think, however, that he would do so in love and peace.  He would want monuments to hatred uprooted but he would do it peacefully and in love.  He would deal in hope when others despaired.  The entire idea of following Christ is that we do things peacefully, lovingly.

No matter what the issues are, or which side you are on, I see far too little of that today.  It means that I must approach everything with this goal in mind.  I must live a life that promotes peace in every situation and at every turn.  It is me that must become the instrument that plays a song of peace to others.

It is not easy and I have much to learn.  It still is the way of wisdom.  It is the path to home.  There are no limits to what we can accomplish if we become instruments of peace.  We can find this peace in our determination to be lovingly unoffendable.  It lives in our ability to be the conduit of Christ’s love in every situation.  It is up to us, Dear Reader.

As we make our way through these interesting times, I plan to focus more deeply on peace and letting that be the song I play.  I urge you to do the same.  If they attack you for being peaceful, you are not the problem.  The weapons that work on the war against hatred and violence are love and grace.  Patience and kindness yield peace.  It is what we must be about today and every day.  It is this that will put us in the place to play the song of love through the instrument of our hearts.  If I strike up the tune will you sing with me, Dear Reader?

Wishing you joy in the journey,

The Path of Peace ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

I suppose that if we are going to call for others to live peaceably, we must provide them with the way to get there.  It seems obvious to me but as I am often told, I am an idealist.  I know that the thinks that I think can work in the real world but too often we use what others might do as an excuse to do it first.

We live in a world where the value of the golden rule, “do to others what you would have them do to you” is lost.  Instead, we live by rules of lead such as, “do to others because they might do to you”, or “do to others because they have done to you.”   The leaden responses carry us into violence, hatred, and war.  They rip away peace and love.  They deny our obligation to walk on a foundation of loving grace.

We see a further reason here to be unoffendable.  If we respond to every offense with love and grace, we create the possibility for peace.  There will never be a place in our journey that does not offer anger and hurt.  We choose where we step no matter how bad the circumstance.  The idea is to choose peace through love at each step.

I need to think through what keeps me on the path of peace.  I want to be sure that I focus ahead of time on what my responses are so that I use them in tense situations.  We are often told that we just react to things.  Whilst this is true on some level, we react with the responses we have learned.  It is, therefore, necessary to train our minds and hearts to love and grace so that we react in peace.

Please walk with me as I process how I am going to recognize, accept, and walk the path that allows me to live peaceably with everyone.  It will not be easy, Dear Reader, but it will be simple.  The journey home will not be a short one until we learn to walk in peace together.  Even if we have to struggle with every step, we can learn to do so with love and grace in our hearts and minds.  Please walk with me and share your thoughts and questions.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Sentinels ~ And Justice for All

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is not just the police or courts that must be sentinels of justice.  Whether it is legal or social justice, we are all responsible that it be made equally available to everyone.  We live in freedom under a system that is supposed to deliver justice to everyone.

We rarely discuss Divine justice.  It has been made clear that if we claim to follow Christ then we have a deep obligation to both civil and social justice.  We are not supposed to treat anyone unjustly.  We do.  We do more often than we admit.  For those of you who do not share my faith, you are always free to hold us accountable to this truth.

We have replaced an understanding of justice with an attitude of fairness in our culture.  I have said before, I do not believe in fairness when it comes to human needs.  I believe in justice.  I am not talking about this at the legal level even though that applies.  We cannot be “fair” to everyone.  There is no way to make everything equal.  We can be just with everyone if we choose to be.

The duty to stand sentinel over justice includes tempering it with love, grace, mercy, and kindness.  The idea that justice should be blind may work for legal issues but not for social or moral ones.  First, one cannot legislate morality.  I will leave that there and pick it up another time.  When it comes to social justice, the blindfold has no place.  We are supposed to consider the needs of others for the very purpose of dealing with them justly.

It is sadly funny and deadly serious that when we turn a blind eye to the needs of others, we are in fact being unjust.  We have the ability to help and we choose to walk by instead.  As Christ followers, we are obligated to care for others.  We may not be able to help everyone.  We can, however, help more than we do.  We walk in injustice more than we should.

As sentinels of justice, we wield not a sword but love and kindness.  We deliver grace and mercy in the name of being just about our debt for the grace and mercy we have received.  We cannot be blind to the needs of others and deal justly with the gifts we have received.

The church over the ages has hammered others with God’s justice whilst failing to temper it with his love and mercy.  We have beaten others with it instead of dealing in grace.  We must be just in our application of all things.  It must flow from our standing watch over the needs of others and not our judgment of those in need.  We have failed greatly by relegating our obligation for the social justice needs or our neighbors to our government and then not demanding that they do it well.  We have turned a blind eye to the needs of others and written on the eye patch is “there are government programs for that.”

Justice must be viewed as something provided to those in need and not just a way to get what we think we are due.  If I see things honestly, I owe more than I am due, therefore, I must focus first on dealing out loving, merciful, kind justice to others.  If my faith is real, I can count on the Father to justly meet my needs.  How about you Dear Reader?

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Injustice Collectors ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

It is easy to find things about which to be offended.  It is common to feel slighted or injured by the actions of others.  We must not allow that to be our banner. Injustice wil exist as long as there are people involved.

Our response to injustice is to right it.  We can do this through love and kindness if we choose to do so.  If I am to show love to the world then I cannot afford to be easily offended or thinking of myself first.  I cannot be harsh or offensive on behalf of others.

Following Christ requires humility and patience.  It insists that I consider the needs of others over my own.  It calls for me to be good to others and more so when they are being unkind to me.  I must always work toward real justice and fight the injustice of judging and trying to control others through injustice collection.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Injustice Collectors ~ Easily Offended

Greetings Dear Reader,

I grew up in a culture where one did not dare to show when one was offended.  It was not polite.  As a young adult my response to that was to be offended by everything and let everyone know about it.

By grace and discipline, I have learned that being offended is a choice.  I have also learned that most of things that try to offend me are a matter of my own pride or prejudice.  I tell people who worry about my being offended that I am easily embarrassed but difficult to offend.

We are not supposed to be easily offended.  Taking up offenses is just another way of controlling others and collecting injustices.  The power of this control is dangerous and wrong.  I am supposed to respect the sensibilities of the weak but not required to do so for the manipulative.

Being easily offended is also a form of judgment.  It says that I deem your actions unacceptable and choose my standards over your freedom.  It says that you must cater to my feelings even if it tramples on your liberty.  Again, I must respect the needs of the weak but am not required to cater to the control of the whiney.

I realize that these are strong words.  I understand that I may be trampling on some tender toes.  I choose to speak the truth.  I choose not to be easily offended and to love those who do things that are offensive.  I expect the same of others.  We miss so much good when we wander the world looking for the next thing that will offend us.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn
