Slow Down ~ Turn the Page

Greetings Dear Reader,

I promised to suggest some things to do with your time.  According to the Pew Research Center, in 2019 roughly a quarter of U.S. adults (27%) say they haven’t read a book in whole or in part in the past year, whether in print, electronic or audio form.  As an author, this really hurts my feelings.  This means that for one-quarter of you, there is a zero percent chance of you buying my books.

Since we are to shelter in place as much as possible over the next fortnight, I would suggest that you take advantage of Amazon’s amazing delivery options.  You can order many books to journey through and catch up on your reading time.  This link will take you to my Author Page on Amazon and this one will take you to My Publisher.

What is more important, is that you read.  Reading feeds the mind and nurtures the soul.  It takes our focus off of the problems and allows us to escape from worry.  Books do not have commercials or news breaks.  One can dive into a world where anything can happen.  In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Guinan, the Enterprise bartender says, “Books can take you places a Starship can never go.”  Ponder that for a moment.

Some of you are thinking “but I do not read books.”  No one does a good thing until they do it.  Your past need not be your future.  There are great books out there that can take you on adventures whilst you sit in your comfy chair and enjoy your favorite beverage.

Books change us.  They teach and guide.  They reward and warn.  If you dare you should read more.  I know I am going to do so.  I would prefer that all of you buy my books and read them.  I care more that you read.  As always, I would suggest that you share your thoughts and questions with me, but if you get lost in a book and forget to, that is a great reward.  You give me more insight when we share our book adventures together.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Second Thoughts ~ Thoughts and Questions Long Overdue

Greetings Dear Reader,

I am trying to increase the number of my literary children.  Today my sixth child came into the world.  It is not a work of fiction like my other offspring.  Rather, it is an application focused devotional titled, Thoughts and Questions on Ephesians.  The title link will take you to my publisher’s sale page.  It will be on Amazon soon and I will update you.

This is the first in a series of books focused on application of the text.  The first four focus on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians.  These four epistles teach us a great deal about how to follow Christ in a non-following world.  The format is to walk through the text sentence by sentence.  Then you can, Dear Reader record your own thoughts and questions on the topic just as I have.  We can have a conversation about letters penned two thousand years ago without ever being in the same room.

If you wish an autographed copy with some swag, feel free to write me at the email address below and I will arrange payment.  Please include a postal mailing address with your email request.  I am happy to do the leg work to get you a personalized copy.   aramisthorn@aramisthorn.com

As always, I treasure any interaction you may have with me regarding my thoughts on the text.  I will not, however, indulge in arguments over things that do not matter eternally.  Enjoy the book.  Post an Amazon review for me if you will.  Remember that I write for the joy of it but also wish to make my living this way.

Coming soon – The Twelve Tales of Christmas and an updated edition of Sheetrock on the Road.  Keep reading, sharing, and communicating with me.  I treasure every interaction.  If you want to host a book signing or media event, let me know and we will arrange it.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts ~ Monthly Marketing Moment

Greetings Dear Reader,

Christmas novels must be
written before Christmas
Someone told me recently that I should not call this a “marketing moment” because people will not read it.  I am choosing to be open about it because I do not desire to “trick” anyone into reading my marketing posts.  I also owe it to those who support me to be accountable for my promise to work harder to market my work.

If you stop here Dear Reader, I will not be offended.  Here is an update and my marketing needs:

The Twelve Tales of Christmas is complete and being edited.  Cover design is in progress and should be complete by the end of June.
Magi: The Gift Bearers will be complete by the end of June if things stay on pace.  Cover design for it will be complete by the end of July.
I hope to have both to the publisher by the end of August.

Here is what you can do to help Dear Reader:
  • Comment on and Share my BLOG:  http://aramisthorn.blogspot.com/ .  Going to the actual blog page is the best but Facebook, Google +, Twitter, and Medium are helpful as well.  Every time you share or comment on my blog it raises my visibility.  Whilst you are there you can also follow me on these sites.
  • I also have a kids BLOG: https://aramisthornkids.blogspot.com/ .  Always friendly and kid safe.  The youngsters in your life can interact with a real author.
  • Read my novels.  You can get them HERE.
  • Post reviews after you read my novels.  I would love to know when you have done this. Please send me a link.
  • If you want me to come talk to your book club, social circle, writer’s group, or any other group you think would be interested you can reach me at aramisthorn@aramisthorn.com..  I would be happy to share my journey and experience in hopes of encouraging others along the way.

Thank you as always Dear Reader for your support and kindness.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Second Thoughts ~ Christmas Joys ~ What to Give?

Happy Christmas Dear Reader,

“When you don’t know what to give, give a book.”

As a writer you can imagine that this is one of my favorite ways to spread joy.  If we were to truly remember the value of reading we would be richer for it.  I give books and not just my own as gifts often.  Feel free to give some of my works as gifts.  You can get them here.  The reading is the important thing.

There is something in those silent patient companions that endures.  The stories are always there to be retold and reread.  Adventures new and old await the time when you take them from the shelf and wander through them with the flicking of the finger.

It is wise to take time during the Christmas season to read a tale or two.  It relaxes the body and distracts the mind.  It is a good thing to read a book.  You learn, grow, and become more than you are.

Read to your children as well.  Teach them early on of the value of the habit.  Put more time aside for them to read to you as well.  This will carry life long rewards.  Think about this when you think about what to give others.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Second Thoughts – Reading

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

From my earliest memories I love the stories that unfold from books.  I was blessed that my primary school required summer reading.  I was further blessed to be in a home that held many books.

I see that love growing in my Grandsons as they reach the ages where they can learn to read.  They have reading time with their Dad that they treasure.  They are getting to know excellent books.

March 2nd is the National Education Association Reading Awareness Day.   I of course would love it if you were reading my books.  Whatever you choose to read, I care more that you do read.  Knowing a book broadens your life.  It gives you new places to stand and go.  It makes one a richer person.

There are so many genres and types of tales.  There are so many educations and adventures to be had.  Please Dear Reader, read.   Read to each other.  Read to your children and grandchildren.  Become of lover of good words, well-crafted into grand adventures.  Learn new things.  Think new thoughts.  Tell me of your journeys and I will share mine.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Second Thoughts – What Am I Going To Do

Greetings Dear Reader,

Sometimes I will end the day with thoughts that are important to get out.  Usually I just write them and put them in my journal folder.  I have chosen that on occasion I will share them with you Dear Reader.

Whilst walking outside today enjoying the sunshine I fell in step with four young ladies who were on break from a convention.  The walkway on which we trod could easily carry twenty abreast so walking beside them was neither cumbersome nor awkward.  They were talking about social media and their various levels of addiction to it.

One mentioned that she is constantly stressed over making sure that her Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are up to date.  My thought was that there was a way to automate that.  I refrained from telling her.

Another of the ladies spoke about the week she has lost her phone and how lost she felt without it.  She went on to say how long it took her to catch up on everything.  I refrained from mentioning that she could use a computer to keep current were her phone unavailable.

A third young lady in the group gasped at this.  She speculated that she would be horrified were she to be off of Facebook for a week.  She actually said, “I have no idea what I would do with my time.  I would have nothing to do at all.”

My thought was, “They make the odd rectangular objects call books.  As long as one has light one can read them and learn things or go on great adventures in our minds.  Books can take you places a starship can never venture.”  I did not refrain from telling her this.

Her response was that she has to read books for college so she does not want to read when she does not have to read them.  It saddens me greatly that as a species we are losing the value of reading for leisure and pleasure.  It saddens me more that social media is more important than books.

The value of reading is so important to our society.   I have a friend Ben whose example as a reader constantly challenges me to do more.  I assure that I read so that my brain has fodder for my writing.

Books change us.  They teach and guide.  The reward and warn.  If you dare you should read more.  I know I am going to do so.  If you are looking for a book or two to get you started I have some out there.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

On Giving Thanks – Writing

Greetings Dear Reader,

As I sit here free to put down whatever words I wish I want you to how much that fills my heart with gratitude.  Not only does it help me work through the mess in my head, it also allows me to create, make a modest income, and share my journey with Christ.

There have been times when I thought to walk away from the blank page.  I think that if I did I would retire to Bedlam.  I work toward doing a certain amount of writing every day.  I work at disciplining my mind and developing my craft.  I pray that my writing helps others.

Much of what I write is fiction.  This daily send-up that you are reading is my way of chronicling my thoughts and questions along my journey.  Writing allows me an honest opportunity to work out my troubles and struggles.   It allows me to express my joy and hope.  It allows me to speak of things in a way that is safe.

I am thankful for the writing and for your input Dear Reader.  I read, save, and ponder every comment.  As I give thanks for the gift of writing I give thanks for you as well.  I try to choose every word to honor the living Word.  Each word is the essence of communication.  I am thankful for words.

On Giving Thanks – Books

Greetings Dear Reader,

In the office where I do most of my writing I am surrounded by hundreds of books.  As a writer I know the value of reading books.  I read much more than I write.  I read across the centuries.  Fiction and non-fiction are both vital to reading.  I have difficulty making the adjustment to reading digitally.  I love the feel of a book in my hand.  There is not a room where I spend waking time where there is not a bookshelf of sorts.

It needs to be clear that what I love is reading and not just books.  There is a difference.  I know people who collect books and those who collect reading.  I am the latter.  For me books are the collection of the thoughts and questions of others.  It is a chance to see this world or an imagined one through the eyes of someone else.  I have the opportunity listen to and learn from people long dead and in the midst of history.  I get to feel how they felt in the moment.

So much about reading is immersing one’s self in the mind of another.  For a time we become selfless in a fashion.  We give the mind over to the way in which another sees, thinks, and feels.  Even if it is fiction we are seeing the world through the eyes of the writer.  I am so thankful for the many authors who have taken the time and risk to share their thoughts and questions with me.

I pass on this gratitude by giving books to others.  It is with thankfulness that I reach to my shelves for relaxation or research.  It is with a grateful heart that I pick up a tome for some time away from this world.  It is with anticipation that I read to learn a new thing.  It is with yearning for understanding that I read what others have written about God.

Throughout our history when evil men wish to oppress others they take away books.  I am very thankful that I live in a world where my books are mine to read, enjoy, share, and even write.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

On Giving Thanks – First Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

November is here and my thoughts are firmly fixed on the season for celebration and holy days.  This month I try to daily ponder the many blessings in my life and express gratitude for life I have.

I know people who spend so much time wishing for what they do not have that they are losing, neglecting, or throwing away what they do have.  They are miserable because of what they lack instead of seeing the joy in what they already possess.

In hopes to not becoming this person ever I need to spend time recalling the many blessings in my life and loving others.  A constant focus on gratitude also helps me keep perspective when I am in the midst of pain or troubles.

I invite you to walk with me through a season of gratitude.  I would love to hear your responses to those things for which you are thankful as well.  As always my heat if filled with gratitude for you Dear Reader.  Walk with me as we count our blessings.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

A Stack of Books and A Leap of Faith

Greetings Dear Readers,

Very often we want things for a good reason. Sometimes, along the way the wanting of the thing takes the place of the reason that we want it. For years I have wanted set of books that I only used briefly in the mid 80's. Over the years of wanting them the depth of my understanding of their purpose gave way to just wanting to possess them.

As my beloved wife Avalon leaves me for what she thinks is a better life, I have asked the same question of my feelings for her. Do I really love her or am I just trying to hold onto something I want having forgotten what it truly is? The true and harsh answer is both. I want MY WIFE. I do not want to go through the rejection, betrayal, violation of promises, and pain involved in a woman who vowed to stay with me for life deciding she does not have to abide by that promise. The last I checked I am not dead.

On the other hand, I truly do love her and know the meaning of that love. I have listened to others, as I go through this process, say things about Avalon that they would not say while she was in my life. The hard part is that the things that are being said are true. They are not pretty nor are they things I would allow myself to think about her. As I admit that there are some very unlovely things that are true about my departing spouse, I also realize that beyond on them I truly love her. It was an error to blind myself to those things and to not seek Christ's healing of my fears and her flaws in our marriage. It is necessary to never stop loving her, to see her as she is and constantly remember why I loved her from the beginning.

It is also necessary, for the sake of my own healing, to see her as she is, warts and all. I have done a good job of owning my own sin and failures. I have not been willing to remember that she is just as fallen as I am and that she has chosen a path contrary to the expressed desires of Christ. I must love her even though she rends me. I must remember the real reasons I loved her from the beginning and no matter what she does, see her as she is and continue to lover her.

I recently bought the books I spoke of earlier. I can see them from where I sit. I have delved deeply into them and remembered why I love them so much. They have something to teach me on every page. I bought them to remind me that you do not go into things so that you can blind yourself to what they are, but rather in faith see things as they are and work to make them more as God intended. Each time I study from my new books I intend to check on my faithfulness to seeing things as they are and not as I imagine or wish them to be. I will still look toward what they can become in Christ, but will do my best not to be blind to the wounds that need healing first. I failed Avalon in not seeing what she needed and I failed my sons in not seeing how those needs effected them and my relationship with them.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
Aramis Thorn

Falling on my Knees

Greetings Dear Readers,

I have spent a great deal of time recently studying the ins and outs of what it means to be truly a follower of Jesus Christ. At the church I attend we have just begun studying the twelfth chapter of the book of Romans. I know some of you have no idea what I am talking about and that is just fine. Here is the gist of what falls into my thinking.

Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

The question with which I wrestle is, how do I truly make sure that I am a living sacrifice to Christ? Part of my answer is that I must live in the moment, constantly checking to see that my backside is still firmly planted on that alter; that I am sacrificing all that I am to Christ in every moment. This is not accomplished by obeying rules or following a plan. It is accomplished by realizing that I am never going to be content anywhere else.

Joy Williams has a recorded a song that I have listened to as a mantra for the last week or so. I want it to permeate my heart and mind to the depth that it becomes my anthem. Here are the lyrics and a link to the song. Give it a listen before you continue reading if you will.

www.esnips.com/doc/4157f16d-50de-4ad8-b787-906d7cf7a4ea/Joy-Williams---Hungry-(Falling-On-My-Knees)

Hungry

Hungry, I come to You, For I know You satisfy
I am empty but I know, Your love does not run dry
So I wait for You, So I wait for You

I'm falling on my knees, Offering all of me
Jesus, You're all this heart, Is living for

Broken, I run to You, For Your arms are open wide
I am weary but I know, Your touch restores my life
So I wait for You, So I wait for You

I'm falling on my knees, Offering all of me
Jesus, You're all this heart, Is living for
So I wait for You, So I wait for You, So I wait for You

I'm falling on my knees, Offering all of me. Jesus, You're all this heart, Is living for

And I'm falling on my knees, Offering all of me. Jesus, You're all this heart, Is living for

Hungry, I come to You, For I know You satisfy

I think the tone of my posts will be changing, but I will still give you the light and airy as well. If you pray for me, and I hope you do, please pray that I never lose the moment I am in right now. If I can keep this heart and this mind, all else makes sense. I love you all, collectively and individually. RJ thanks for the feedback.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Do not call me Christian

Greetings Dear Readers,

I know that those of you who know me personally may be shocked by that title. I do have a reason for what I am saying. Over the last decades, I have seen, as have others that the label "Christian" has lost much of its power and respect. In the words of my pastor (yes I have one of those), I believe the word no longer communicates. My faith has not changed but what I call myself has.

I regret that some who claim the name Christian do so much to hurt the image of God that Christ brought us. God does not hate anyone and commands his followers to love even their enemies. So I have chosen to leave the label behind me so that I can communicate better that which I am commanded to:
  • Love God with all my heart, soul, and mind
  • Love my neighbor as myself

Anything else is just footnotes. This means I do not hate you just because your life is different than mine. It means that I do not care about many of the issues Christians rally around. I do have feelings and opinions about many things, but I will not reject anyone just because they disagree with me. I apologize for those who identify with Christ and then hate others. That is not who Christ is. Please do not judge Christ by the poor examples of his followers you encounter. If you read my blog, you are much too intelligent for that.

If you must find a way to label me, try Christ Follower. I do not feel that I am worthy of that title, but it is my heart's desire to become a man who can be seen that way. I am not as good at this as I wish to be but I also know that today, in this moment, I am following Christ as best I can, and that is all I may honestly offer you. For those of you who do not know about my faith, here it is in a brief explanation.

I am, like all persons, a fallen sinful human.
I know that God exists and he loves me.
I know that my sinfulness separates me from that love.
The only just penalty for my sin is eternal separation from God.
God would rather die than live without me.
He chose to live in the form of a human as Jesus Christ.
As that God/man he never sinned but paid the price of his unjust death for my sin.
I can do nothing to merit God's favor, but by faith I can avail myself of this payment for my sin.
It is by faith alone that I find my relationship with God the Father through his Son, Jesus.
He offers this free gift to anyone who will accept it

So please, when you talk about me or my writing, do not call me a Christian. If you wish to discuss this feel free to email me, aramisthorn@aramisthorn.com, or you can comment here on the blog. Other than that, I as always wish you the same thing.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Warm Winds and Hot Snow

Greetings Dear Readers,

As the temperatures rise and we near air conditioning weather I am surprised to look out my window and see it as white as January. In our back yard stands an old and vast cottonwood tree. Each spring it spreads its fairy-like seeds across our lawn literally covering it.

Today is that day. The fairies dance upon the wind that whips about the tree that was their home. When I was a boy I used to catch these and make wishes on them. They will cover the newly mown lawn by sunset and the anticipated rain will melt them away tomorrow.

This is a day unique in so many ways but the greatest for me is the dance of the fairies on the wind telling me that Spring has passed its zenith and summer looms on the horizon. It says that soon the sound of fans drawing cool outside air will be replaced by the AC providing quiet cooled inside air. The cool season has been long this year and I am thankful for it. My allergies have been quiet and I am more thankful for that. The world is warming and soon I will swim and enjoy the cool waters.

For today, however, I am content to sit and write with the fan trained on me and the cottonwood fairies knocking on the screen door begging refuge from the coming rains.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Coming Soon...

Greetings Dear Readers,

The wait may finally be over. I heard from my publisher yesterday and you may be able to get The Praetor before summer officially begins. Since my oldest son is getting married this summer, I would caution you not expect too many appearances of the author before fall.

On another front, I am almost finished with the rewrite of second installment of the Annals of the Four Horsemen, Chronicles of Polaemos The War Bringer. I will post a chapter on the web site in the near future. Hopefully we will have cover art by the end of summer.

I am currently writing to novels at once. Remind me some time to tell you how I structure this as there are currently 33 books outlined and ready for writing. If someone could tell me how to extract the stories directly from my brain without going through the keyboard or my microphone, please let me know.

Until then I will pound away crafting new tales for you letter by letter. As always, I am grateful to my readers and their support.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
Aramis Thorn
