Rounding Third

Greetings Dear Reader,

I realize that baseball is in the midst of its long winter’s nap.  It is the proper metaphor, however, for the day.  The last day of November holds the moment when we begin the year’s journey toward home.

This may be literally for Christmas and family.  It is also the closing of the year and this year; it is the closing of a decade.  The first fifth of the twenty-first century has slipped through the glass.  It is also the month that marks my very favorite time of year.

Tomorrow, I will begin my true writing about Christmas.  Today though, I want to focus on the opportunity that only comes once a year in popularity but can be employed every day if we wish.  It is Small Business Saturday.  I have already made one small business purchase for a Christmas gift.  I will only buy from small businesses today; but wait, there is more.

Another aspect of today is that I begin my reflection on how I have improved in carrying Christmas in my heart throughout the year.  I can see improvement but there is so much more that I can and will do in this area.  The sand is drifting through the glass and soon thoughts of Christmas and the New Year will fill our focus.  I mean to take a breath and see the day for what it is.

Even though my life is also rounding third, I need to see that I am where I am supposed to be and that things are unfolding as they should.  The long dark of winter is not a dreadful dark anymore to me.  Each grain of sand matters.  I will round third but pause just long enough to see the value of third for what it is.  It is almost home, potential in motion, and whatever lies ahead on the path is going to be just what it should.

The Father is calling us all home, Dear Reader.  Eventually, there will come a Winter with a Spring that I shall never see.  There will come a Christmas where I do not get share my joy with you.  Today, however, I want to remind you that wherever we are in the passage, there is always time for another Christmas song.

Another Christmas Song – Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson

Hope everybody’s ringing on their own bell, this fine morning.
Hope everyone’s connected to that long-distance phone.
Old man, he’s a mountain.
Old man, he’s an island.
Old man, he’s awaking – says,
“I’m going to call, call all my children home.”

Hope everybody’s dancing to their own drum this fine morning –
the beat of distant Africa or a Polish factory town.
Old man, he’s calling for his supper.
He’s calling for his whiskey.
Calling for his sons and daughters, yeah – calling, calling all his children round.

Sharp ears are tuned in to the drones and chanters warming.
Mist blowing round some headland, somewhere in your memory.
Everyone is from somewhere –
even if you’ve never been there.
So take a minute to remember the part of you, that might be the old man calling me.

How many wars you fighting out there, this Christmas morning?
Maybe it’s always time for another Christmas song.
Old man, he’s asleep now.
Got appointments to keep now.
Dreaming of his sons and daughters and proving, proving that the blood is strong.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Black Friday

Greetings Dear Reader,

I will be seeking out one thing this morning.  It is a gift for someone else.  It is in hope that I can obtain what I need and then get to my morning prayer time with ease.

I have little use for the shopping side of Black Friday.  Last year it was a day of quiet and rest for me.  I had completed my NaNoWriMo work and was not wanting to pursue much else.  Today I have much to do and not enough time to do it.  I will find a way.

Still, as I ponder those who will spend the day seeking things, I wonder if we are too far down the path.  We rush for items and go into debt trying to please others when we could find better ways to show our love.  I miss some of the things that were my traditions for years regarding this weekend.  I miss bell ringing at the grocery store I frequented.  Putting up my decorations was part of this week each year.

I continue to ride the wave of gratitude for all that I have learned and gained since last Thanksgiving.  My heart is fully turned toward Christmas and celebrating the Advent in richness and joy.  Much of what I value about Christmas is intangible and so the rush to buy and obtain has little purchase where I am concerned.  I will spend the day working, praying, and thinking about the joy that is mine because of friends and family.  I will miss those I cannot see and fill my heart with hope for days when we can all be together.  Even if that is not until the end of our journeys, I know it will be worth the wait.

Be careful out there today Dear Reader.  No bargain is worth even the slightest slight of another human.  Be at peace with the day and find ways to encourage others.  Kindness given is always a good bargain.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ Closing Thoughts

Happy Thanksgiving Dear Reader,

Let me begin today by saying again how thankful I am for you and your constant encouragement in our journey home.  This past year has been filled with changes, blessings, and learning.  Everything is not as I wish it to be but, in every day, I find blessings and the presence of Christ.

I would like to close our walk through simple gratitude with a few specifics.  Last year at this time I was still unemployed with a will-o-the-wisp of hope on the horizon.  I now work daily and have the ability to share with others.  I still wish to get to the place where my income is independent of anything but writing.  This does not diminish my gratitude for a job and all that it provides.

I have a clearer vision than ever of where I wish to be and how to get there.  It involves waiting and learning; other things for which I am grateful.  I have learned a great deal from The Well: House of Prayer and my time of focused prayer there has been beautiful, painful, and instructive.  I find great joy in the Life Group that I am in and am thankful for Rachel and Tripp as leaders.

My gratitude for my new publisher and their publishing of two new books, The Twelve Tales of Christmas and Thoughts and Questions on Ephesians is huge.  The team there is supportive and kind.  They have also republished Sheetrock on the Road at a lower price.  I am on pace for two new books in 2020 and 2021.  Book sales are trending up and I have clear numbers that I need to achieve to eclipse my salary and write full time.

I am grateful for my Brother and Sister-in-Law.  They and their children have shown me love and support at a level I could not imagine when I arrived here.  It is a blessing to get to know my NiecePhews and watch them grow.  It is also joyful to sit at a table where Christ is preeminent.

I am so deeply thankful for so many things over this past year.  I could spend the day writing about them but I have other things to which I must attend.  I would leave you with this, Dear Reader; gaining a stronger grip on gratitude is worth the effort.  This month has strengthened my automatic response of a thankful heart in situations where it is warranted.  It has deepened my ability to be grateful in situations where I may foolishly think gratitude is out of place.

The sum is that there is always something for which to thank the Father.  There is always a way to find gratitude in the moment if we are seeking Christ and founded in love.  This is our journey.  This is where we must be to get where we are going Dear Reader.  Happy Thanksgiving.  I love you and cherish you.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ NiecePhews, Pies, and Pumpkins

Greetings Dear Reader,

As I promised yesterday, I will get back to the pies today.  First, I should explain the term, NiecePhews.  I grow weary of always having to type nieces and nephews so, as is my right as an author, they are NiecePhews.

Later today, I will be making pies for Thanksgiving with my younger NiecePhews.  The lad wishes to be a chef one day after he first wins MasterChef Junior.  The young lass wants to be a part of anything that I do with her brother.  We will be making pumpkin and mincemeat pies.  I have everything ready and am looking forward to guiding younger minds through the pie making journey.

My gratitude is for the opportunity to teach, the making of the pies, and the actual pies themselves.  I am filled with joy at the anticipation of moving young hearts along a path they enjoy.  My gratitude is for the much better place I am in this year as we approach the day set aside for giving thanks.  Not only is my practical situation more secure, but my heart is also in the rebuilding stage of a complete reset.

My mind is on a fresh path.  I have written two books this year and will complete a third by the end of the week.  Two of my new works, The Twelve Tales of Christmas and Thoughts and Questions on Ephesians were both published this year.  I am working daily to move to make my living only from writing.  My second devotional will be published in early Spring and my novel for Christmas 2020 will be back from the editor in a fortnight.

As I make pies with family today, I realize that I will have much for which to be simply grateful.  Part of that gratitude, Dear Reader is learning to be thankful for what is in front of me at the moment.  In trying to do this, I have realized that there is always something for which to be grateful.  There is always a blessing in the moment as it unfolds.  Christ is present in every instant if we seek him.  At this moment, I am also thankful for you and your company on the journey home.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ Dreams

Greetings Dear Reader,

I had slated to write about pies this morning but awakened with a heart filled with gratitude for something deeper.  I do not wish to neglect the pies so I will speak about them tomorrow.  This morning, however, I wish to speak of dreams.

I often have dreams and I have far fewer nightmares than even a year ago.   In fact, I have not had a nightmare in almost seven months.  That is part of my gratitude.  Last night I dreamt about Project Tortoiseshell.  I dreamt it was a reality.

I was laying on the back bed of the caravan, looking out at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.  The sun was shining like honey on the formation.  In my dream I knew I was on my way to Washington to visit John and Lori.  The part that brought great joy to my heart and a smile to my awakening today was that I was not alone.  Everything about the dream was a fulfillment of the things for which I have been praying.

I am not claiming the dream as prophetic or building more into it than is just there.  What I am doing is recognizing the joy it brings me to see a mini-movie of what my heart desires.  I also found new gratitude for the reality of my dreams.  What I mean is that they are so real that I often must take a moment to reorient when I awaken.  That too is something that was a hindrance when there were nightmares but is a blessing now.  The reality of this dream to me is so deep that I am filled with joy that I can imagine this life I seek so clearly.

I am thankful for dreams Dear Reader.  This one filled my tank to keep pursuing writing, my caravan, and only making my living from the words I string together for you.  I saw a clear vision of what can be if I remain faithful and continue to work hard.  I saw what fills my heart as a reality and it fueled my hope, desire, and faith.  I am learning to live simply.  I am practicing enjoying the “inconveniences” of travel and the rhythm of the road.

Today, I wish to express my gratitude for dreams of hope and faith.  I want to share them with you since you have been so patient with me through the nightmares.  I am looking forward to the days when they become reality.  I promise to share that with you as well Dear Reader.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Simple Gratitude ~ The Rundown

Greetings Dear Reader,

In case it has not escaped you, one month from today is Christmas Day.  I realize that this realization comes with both joy and panic.  I find the rundown to Christmas exhilarating.

There are those who do not like the time and find it stressful.  There are even those who dislike Christmas.  I wish to express simple gratitude for the time and for all the facets of feeling surrounding it.  I long to express this gratitude by being aware of the feelings toward Christmas that others carry.

It is not my place to make you love Christmas.  I will, however, love it enough for both of us until you come around.  I do want to show you why I value it so dearly.  I also want to understand anything the holds you back from the joy of the season.  Whether it be anxiety, bad memories, or your view of the season, how you feel matters.  I care about you and only wish the best for you Dear Reader.

I am thankful for this time when I can express my joy more freely and share it with others.  One of the ways to show that gratitude is to love everyone, no matter how engaged or disengaged he or she is from Christmas.  The intent is to pass on the good tidings of great joy intended for everyone.  Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but it is intended for each of us, collectively and individually.

This is why I am thankful for the rundown to Christmas.  It gives me an opportunity to show the spirit of the season that I try to keep all the year.  I put up my tiny tree in my car for my journey north.  Someone at a coffee shop there recognized me as the “guy with the Santa hat.”  She said that I made her feel “like Christmas.”   If the sum of what I impart to others could always be that, then I would be truly blessed.   My desire is for you to feel like the perfect Christmas morning every day Dear Reader.  As we walk toward it, I will offer some ways to take up this mantle as I seek to better carry it myself.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ Sons

Greetings Dear Reader,

This will be brief and maybe not too insightful.  I have two sons that I love dearly.  They are both intelligent, capable, and good men.  I was privileged to see them both this weekend.

What I was pleased to see was both of them genuinely smile over things.  I saw them enjoying their friends and family.  I saw the love they share with others and the way in which they are able to make others feel accepted no matter the situation.  I primarily drove 1600 miles round trip to celebrate my Grandson’s birthday.  Seeing my Sons, however, makes the journey worth it.

Sunrise of Your Smile – Michael Card

Reject the worldly lie that says
That life lies always up ahead
Let power go before control becomes a crust around your soul
Escape the hunger to possess
And soul-diminishing success
This world is full of narrow lives
I pray by grace your smile survives

For I would wander weary miles
Would welcome ridicule, my child
To simply see the sunrise of your smile
To see the light behind your eyes
The happy thought that makes you fly
Yes, I would wander weary miles
To simply see the sunrise of your smile

Now close your eyes so you can see
Your own unfinished memories
Now open them, for time is brief
And you'll be blest beyond belief
Now glance above you at the sky
There's beauty there to blind the eye
I ask all this then wait awhile
To see the dawning of your smile

For I would wander weary miles
Would welcome ridicule, my child
To simply see the sunrise of your smile
To see the light behind your eyes
The happy thought that makes you fly
Yes, I would wander weary miles
To simply see the sunrise of your smile

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Simple Gratitude ~ Gatherings

Greetings Dear Reader,

One of the things that permeates our lives this time of year is gatherings.  Whether it is family for Holy Days or friends in celebration we gather.  We eat and drink.  We talk and catch up on what has transpired in our lives.

When I arrived in town, I got to see a dear friend whom I have not seen in two years.  Then I was pleased to dine with my younger Son and visit with his family.  I was privileged to have breakfast in my favorite diner with another precious friend.  I got to give a copy of the Twelve Tales of Christmas to the waitress mentioned in one of the stories.  I visited some shops where people know me from years of my custom there.  Gatherings do not have to last long to be rich and precious

Since this trip is a short one, I do not have the time to see all who I would.  Even not being able to see everyone I wish reminds me to be grateful for them.  It reminds me that when planning gatherings, I need to be careful that I show this same understanding for others.   I need to be as inclusive as possible. I need to make sure others feel welcome.

Later today, I will begin the journey back south.  I will return here for Christmas and have a longer time to visit with others.  I long for the freedom that project tortoiseshell will provide to be anywhere I need to be and gather with friends to celebrate the progress of their journey.  I also plan to keep a piece of my heart looking forward to that final gathering, Dear Reader.

My Grandfather, in his very Southern style, referred to it as the Big Dinner. He would tell me about friends and family he longed to see again when we all gather with Jesus.  It is with an eye toward this that I treasure every gathering.  As we draw closer to the day set aside for giving thanks, I want my simple gratitude to be for the many ways in which we gather to show love for each other.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ Orion

Greetings Dear Reader,

This time of year, I am always enchanted by the constellation Orion hanging low in the chilling sky.  It was one of the first constellations I noticed when I was young and my Grandfather used to make up stories about the hunter and his faithful dog companion.

Some pictures depict him with a bow.  This is where I first began to love the bow and wish to learn to use one.  My Grandfather taught me archery because of this.  We would sit in the early-morning darkness when hunting together. He would whisper stories of the hunter to me including the surrounding constellations as his foes and companions.  For most of my young life, seeing Orion was a connotation to my past that I cherished.

Then, in 2010 my astral hunter friend became all the dearer to me. After much anticipation, on this day, my Grandson, Orion was born.  I love him with a depth that I cannot plumb.  He is intelligent, kind, and creative.  He is one of the great joys of the future that I see.

Each time I see his starry namesake, I whisper like my Grandfather used to whisper in the early morning.  My whisper, however, is not a story but a prayer.  I ask the Father to pour out his love on both my Grandsons and help them to see the richness of that love.  I express my gratitude for the things that are possible because Orion is in the world.  I see the potential in him.

Today, my simple gratitude is that of being able to be reminded of the beauty that exists between grandfathers and their Grandsons.  I will celebrate him all that I am able and will constantly pray for him to see the grace and mercy available to him through Jesus.  Look up at the stars Dear Reader.  Find Orion and see his beauty.   Perhaps, you too can find something for which to be grateful.  Happy birthday Orion.

Orion – Jethro Tull

Orion, won't you give me your star sign
Orion, get up on the sky-line
I'm high on my hill and I feel fine
Orion, let's sip the heaven's heady wine

Orion, light your lights: come guard the open spaces
from the black horizon to the pillow where I lie.
Your faithful dog shines brighter than its lord and master
Your jeweled sword twinkles as the world rolls by.

So come up singing above the cloudy cover
Stare through at people who toss fitful in their sleep.
I know you're watching as the old gent by the station
Scuffs his toes on old fag packets lying in the street

Orion, won't you give me your star sign
Orion, get up on the sky-line
I'm high on my hill and I feel fine
Orion, let's sip the heaven's heady wine

And silver shadows flick across the closing bistro.
Sweet waiters link their arms and patter down the street,
Their words lost blowing on cold winds in darkest Chelsea.
Prime years fly fading with each young heart's beat

Orion, won't you make me a star sign
Orion, get up on the sky-line
I'm high on your love and I feel fine
Orion, let's sip the heaven's heady wine

And young girls shiver as they wait by lonely bus-stops
After sad parties: no-one to take them home
To greasy bed-sitters and make a late-night play
For lost virginity a thousand miles away.
Orion, won't you make me a star sign
Orion, get up on the sky-line
I'm high on your love and I feel fine
Orion, let's sip the heaven's heady wine

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Simple Gratitude ~ Travel

Greetings Dear Reader,

Editorial Note:  I wrote this, this morning when I stopped for breakfast.  The Internet failed just as I was ready to post.

In order to be sure that my posts reach you daily, I have to plan more carefully when I am traveling.  As I write this, I am using WIFI from a generous restaurant.  I am thankful for this and the ease with which my writing can get posted when I am living the life of a nomad.

What I am grateful for today is the travel itself.  The miles slipping beneath my wheels is one I treasure.  I can drive for hours without stopping, though I always stop without complaint for companions who profess the need to drop off or take on liquids.  I enjoy the journey.

Slipping out of a meeting I attended with people I love, slipping into the driver’s seat, and joining the slipstream of other travelers is a beautiful thing.  I set up my music, make sure I have water at hand, and yearn to be on the freeway.  There is a song that relates this so deeply for me that I will share in December as I journey again to the northern Midwest.

The simple gratitude, Dear Reader, is to find that travel is something to be treasured.  Every mile has something in it to enjoy and value.  My dad used to always say, “Look now because it will never be the same.”  The truth of this grows in my understanding constantly.  Each fleeting moment is one in which to find and value the gifts from the father that surround us.

Today I will enjoy breakfast at a place I know and love from many years of driving this highway.  I will have time to pray for those who I know have needs without worrying about the clock.  Later I will see a dear friend whose presence is always a blessing to my life.  It is the journey that provides the joy if we allow it.  Your thoughts and questions are part of that well Dear Reader.  Tomorrow I will write to you from a colder place with a warmer heart.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Simple Gratitude ~ Unnecessary Kindness

Greetings Dear Reader,

At least once every day someone is kind to me without it being necessary.  It takes many forms and comes from differing sources.  We have a duty to kindness that is inherent in our duty to love others and show them grace and mercy.  One of the ways we demonstrate that love is through kindness.

I am not, however, talking about our duty to kindness.  I am speaking of my gratitude for acts of kindness that are spontaneous, unplanned, and almost instinctual.  Whether it is my young niece insisting that she open a door for me or a friend reaching out because he or she is praying for me, the act is encouraging and uplifting.  It fuels my heart to be kinder as well.,

Over the last year, as I have focused on cementing love as my hard deck for all operations, I have seen so much kindness in small things.  A friend brought me Nehi soda after he read my post about Nehi soda.  Another person gave me salad when they had no idea I had been talking to the Father about missing salads.

The idea of kindness given when it is not necessary is at the core of dealing with all people in love.  It is a way to help people along the path so that for a moment the journey is easier.  It is the unnecessary kindness that sets us above the manners and social mores that we are supposed to observe.  When someone responds to my kindness with “you don’t have to do that”, my response is, “you are right, but I get to do it and that makes me happy.”

As the Holy Days begin to build momentum, things will become harried and rushed.  If we look for and give out unnecessary kindness, we will find more peace, patience, and joy.  I am thankful for kindness when it is shown to me Dear Reader.  I am also thankful for the opportunities to show it.  It may be that this is one of the areas where it is truly better to give than to receive.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn
