Second Thoughts ~ Updates and Mandates

Greetings Dear Reader,

As I have felt so much unrest over the last month, I think that I should give you an update so that you can more intelligently pray for me and interact with me.  I have felt a great deal of longing to be on the road.  If you read the Second Thought on Sehnsuhct, you have seen my best attempt at explaining the feeling.

I continue to wish to be free of working my tent-making job.  A friend said that I would likely always be a “starving artist.”   I am not starving but I do wish the time I spend at my job was spent writing.  I dream and imagine all the time of the ability to be traveling and writing, free to see old friends and make new ones.  Until the Father deems it so, I will be content to be here and do all that I can to enrich the lives around me.

Here is how the writing will unfold for the remainder of the year.  Thoughts and Questions on Galatians is out and available.  I will wait if you wish to go buy yours right now; just click that link.  Magi: The Gift Bearers will be available in later October or early November for your Christmas enjoyment.  I plan to write Thoughts and Questions on Philippians in November as well.  It will be out in the Spring of 2021.  My next fictional novel, about Judas, will be the fall book for 2021.  Look for a contest announcement about that book coming soon.

I am still working on Project Tortoiseshell and you may pray about that as well if you are willing.  I keep learning and preparing for the time when the road is open to me and I carry my home on my back.  It occurred to me that I will post my 4000th blog post before the year is out. This will also mark eight years without missing a daily post.  This means that if you read my blog daily you have had over 3000 straight days of my morning meanderings.  No, I will not pay for your therapy.

As I write about writing this week, the longing is deeper to write more and spend less time away from it.  If you would like to know what you can do to help, it is simple.  Pray that I can sell 10,000 books annually and remember me when you are doing your Christmas shopping.  The links at the end of every post will get you to me or my books.  For now, Dear Reader, I am going back to getting things ready for you and our next adventure together.  Thank you for your company along the way.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

November Interlude ~ Closing Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Tomorrow the quest begins in earnest.  This interlude has allowed me to clean up some of the flotsam and jetsam of the things floating in my head.  It has also allowed me to fine tune my perspective on things I must navigate over the month of December.  I must say that I was not prepared for the changes both good and ill or the coldness of the Southern November rain,

Before I venture into tomorrow, however, I wish to sew up the remains of November.  I am not sure what I expected it to feel like three months into this vast change in my life.  Some things have unfolded as I thought they would and most things are still unknown to me.  There is more pain and more joy in the journey thus far.

I am starting to get an image of how things will be going forward but I still have no clear answers.  As with many great quests, I know where I need to get to but have very little idea of how to get there.  I know what I wish the world to look like but since it involves so many variables, I do not have any clear answers.  This fits with my need to learn to live in the moment and be driven by the Spirit.  Even my need to plan and know what I am doing must give way to the direction that is best for my journey home.

On balance, my month of November has been filled with things for which I have great gratitude.  I will continue in that attitude through the end of the year whilst adding some very practical thoughts on questions still taxing my heart.  Your company, Dear Reader has filled me with deeper gratitude and peace.  Your thoughts and questions help me to balance my approach and attitude toward this journey.

As I close out this interlude, I ask that you join me as we turn our faces to the brisk winds of winter, hoping that we see it through well and revel in the further blessings that abound in following Christ.  I will need you to get through this season and your contact and communication encourage me in ways you do not perceive.  Please continue to pray for me and my needs Dear Reader.  I will continue to do the same for you, collectively and individually.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

November Interlude ~ Thanksgiving Leftovers

Greetings Dear Reader,

It has already been a week since Thanksgiving.  Most of us have decorated for Christmas.  The remaining turkey and sides have been consumed, re-purposed, or discarded.  Sage and stuffing are a fading memory as we recover from our feasting and promise to go fasting at some point.

The time with my children was too brief and too absent.  The work I do is there no matter the season, climate, or location.  I turn to it with gratitude in my heart as the words seem to flow more freely this time of year.

I find that even though I am missing many of the things that make this season my favorite I have a heart filled with love and anticipation.  My usual habits and haunts are unavailable to me.  My traditions are subject to my lack of means and material to bear them out.  Still I have so many things left over for which I am thankful.

My circumstances must never meter or mitigate my gratitude.  Were I to spend the entire year writing about the things for which I am thankful, I should not run out of grist for my writing mill on a single day.  I yearn for the familiar but I also know that I do not want to do so when I may miss the new and exciting adventure that today holds.  I am not at home.  I am headed there.  The road I travel is both terrible and lovely.

As I miss my children, I will remind myself that even parted from me they are under the watchful loving eye of the Father and his plan for them is what matters.  I have gratitude to render for his providence, his love, and the freedom to care for others with the time I have.  As I near the end of this odd November, I have so many things for which I am still thankful.  How about you, Dear Reader?  Tell me a story…

Wishing you joy in the journey,

November Interlude ~ The Person You Want to Tell

Greetings Dear Reader,

We all receive good news and bad news.  This can happen regarding large or small things.  Life events and the daily crossword puzzle can give us that yearning to share what we have learned, discovered, accomplished, or heard.  Now think for a moment about that occurrence.

I saw a meme recently that read: “When you get good news or bad news the person you want to tell first is the person you love.”  This stuck a chord deep inside of me.  It was a major chord.   It was immediately followed by a dirge in a minor key.

One of the things I enjoy the most is sharing good news with those I love.  The same is true that I reach out for those I love when I get news that distresses me or hurts in some way.  The truth of the meme was echoed by the daunting fear of learning to be alone.  This is simple.  When you are alone and have these things to share, what do you do?

It is my fear that gives voice to the minor key in worry and complaint.  It is my faith that needs to take the major chord and run with it.  It is my heart that must recognize that those I love will find out when it is the proper time.  I do not need anything in the moment other that the Father.  He is enough.

I suppose this translates to everything.  We are not designed to be alone but that does not mean that social interaction must happen on our schedule.  What is urgent, whether good or ill to us is still subject to the availability and will of others.  It may be why we post so much on social media.

Our desire for instant social gratification drives us to forget that our news is not necessarily important to others.  It might be but we do not get to determine that.  The meme may be a great way to identify how we feel about someone or it may be that the individual is the one who speaks our language, nods to our opinion, or feeds on our gossip.

I am supposed to depend on the Father to hear my every thought and concern.  I am counting on him to know what my social needs are and to meet them.  When the good things come and the bad news appears, I want my habit to be to turn to my Father first.  He will already know but wants to hear from me just the same.  I do promise to share the really important things with you Dear Reader and I always want to hear your news, good or ill.  You matter to me.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

November Interlude ~ Garment Tags

Most of us completely ignore garment tags.  Some of us remove them immediately.  Some read them and follow the instructions.

I am in the ignore them except for when I first buy the garment category.  They contain arcane laundry symbols that scare me.  Those symbols have meaning but there is no handy guide in the shirt pocket to tell how to wash the garment without summoning a bogey.

The idea that one can get life advice from a garment tag never occurred to me until I began to see memes about it.  To save you some tag reading here are some of the thing your clothes want to tell you.

  • This garment was tested on animals; it did not fit.
  • Do not slap pandas.
  • After the aforementioned arcane symbols:  Or just give it to your mother, she knows what to do.
  • Can be washed by both men and women.  Share the load.
  • Keep away from fire; especially when wearing.
  • It is never so hot that you have to take off your shirt; don’t be that guy.
  • Always wear me on a first date; you will do awesome.
  • Made on earth (for those of you who are cautious about alien wear).
  • Wash this when dirty.
  • Do not wear for sumo wrestling.
  • You can dance if you want to.
I am not sure that we can navigate life via garment tags.  I do think that putting humor in such a mundane place is a pleasant surprise for those who discover it.  I also admire those who put creativity in such an overlooked place.  I am not sure that I will search for garment tags with life lessons.

I do know that we find interesting, humorous, and encouraging things in odd places.  As I walk through this interlude between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I am searching for just that.  It is in the searching that I express my hope and determination.  It is also good practice as I have much searching yet to accomplish.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

November Interlude ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

I am still steeped in sage and stuffing.  I have thus far had two Thanksgiving feasts and enjoyed them both.  I have no shopping plans for today but look forward to time with my children and grandsons.

I have my theme planned for December but will not get into that now.  What I am going to do is address the flotsam and jetsam of things that have me asking some deeper questions.  All of them will have to do with filtering my thoughts and questions through my faith in order to know what I think about things.

Since I avoid avarice, I will take a moment to remind you Dear Reader that as you do your Christmas shopping my books make excellent gifts.  I will even have a gift offer in my Patreon page for December.  It is a good thing to remember artists and local businesses when you do your shopping.

That is all of your time I will take today Dear Reader.  I hope that your weekend is filled with family and fun.  I am still so very thankful for you.  Tomorrow we will talk about robots, androids, and social obligation.

The first is that I have set up a Patreon page so that those who have expressed a wish to or those who do wish to can support my efforts.  The patron amounts go from $3.00 to $1000.00 (if you sign up for the $1000 one I will come thank you face to face wherever you are.).  Patreon Page: www.patreon.com/aramisthorn

If all of my blog readers signed up for the $3.00 option I could meet all of my obligations and put out two books per year.  There are also rewards for the upper tier options.  Please consider supporting me even if it is just because you like my BLOG.  I have also set up support goals that will benefit all my patrons should I reach them.

The Mail We Discard

Greetings Dear Reader,

I am relating this tale as told to me by Michael Sharp, my closest friend and deepest confidant.  The puzzle dragon was also present but all she cares about is books.  She had no comment as she considers trusting the Father a given.  The names are fictitious to guard the anonymous.  The events reported are pure fact.

It is my experience that we get about three million pieces of junk mail for every item we get that matters.  I have long held the practice of keeping a rubbish bin by the mail table so that I do not handle junk mail twice.  Today the events unfolded thusly:
  • At nine in the morning I informed by realtor that I could not make my monthly payment as I did not have the funds.
  • At five that evening I received a note assuring me that I would lose my home in five days if I did not pay.
  • At five ‘o two I reassured my daughter that even though I felt discouraged I refused to give up on my faith.
  • At five ’o seven my daughter prayed for the Father to show me how he would meet my needs so that I would not worry and so that I would sleep.
  • At five fifteen my daughter left for her child care job and I checked the mail.
There were three pieces of mail:
  1. The first item was a cardboard mailer from the local grocer promising me wonderful deals on excellent food, Cokes, and Easter Candy.  I could not buy food this week because I might not have a place to put it next week.
  2. The second item was an offer from a lender offering me $20,000 in a signature loan if I would just confirm my employment.  (I do not think that “unemployed” would do the trick).
  3. The third item was a plain white envelope with a window for my address, a return address in numbers and arcane symbols, and a metered mail postal payment reading $00.27.  I thought that they could at least let me know who they are if they were going to spend 27 cents to send me the letter.  Then again, I considered, since they had invested more than a quarter getting the letter to me I should at least open it.

I carefully opened the mail and was gravely disappointed.  It was almost as plain as the envelope.  The first third of the single tri-folded page was the date (February 16, 2018).  I received this on March 5th and wondered where it had gone for two weeks.  The rest of the third of the page was blank save for my name, mailing address, and more arcane numbers.

The second third contained an invitation to log in and update my investment portfolio.  I laughed at God’s sense of humor at sending this to me and started to throw it away in the rubbish.  It was good enough that I had been reminded that my needs were not met by any portfolio but by a Father who loves me.

As I tossed the letter and envelope in the rubbish something happened that I NEVER ignore.  That small spot on the left center rear of my neck began to ping.  Not “one ping only” but pinging like a closing torpedo.  The kind of pinging that is all the alarms going off at once.  Some people, even some who do not believe in God refer to this as the “God Spot”.  Whatever it is I never ignore that ping, once or otherwise.  Listening to that ping has saved my life at least twice.

If only to stop the pinging I retrieved that letter and read the bottom third VERY carefully.  It was this line for which the torpedo was intended: “Please contact us immediately regarding the disposition of your OLD 401k account”.   I said to myself, “I do not have any old 401k accounts.  What could they mean?”
I dismissed it and thought to return the letter to the rubbish.  I heard the pinging ramping up at just the thought.  Instead I called the investment institution’s 800 number.  I spoke to a lovely southern lady named Carol.

She took me through 3,721 security steps to verify I was the person to whom they had intended to send the letter.  I thought how glad I was that the letter had been so short as this process was so very long.

I was very glad that I remembered what street I lived on when I was seven (Crest Hill).   I struggled but recalled that the first car registered in my name was my Grandfather’s 1965 Dodge Dart.  I was nervous for a moment when I had to verify that I have never had a license to be a beautician in Phoenix, a chiropractor in Bangor, or an insurance sales person in Opelika.

Having passed all of the steps, Carol explained that an error had been made when transferring my 401k from one company to another and there was money in the old account but since I was not employed they needed to resolve the account.  She intoned sweetly that she had one more question for me.  She asked me how I would like to deal with the funds in the old account.  I nervously asked her how much it was, hoping it would be enough to cover my housing for the month.  It was more than that.  I began to weep.  I began to tell her without reservation that I had been praying for God to sustain me.  Carol began to cry as well.

I am sure that the Father got a good laugh out of my concern for March when he had already mailed me the answer in February.  I am certain that he got a kick out of me joking with my daughter, “I better check the mail in case someone sent me some money” (that happened this week and last week so I have learned my lesson about joking concerning it).

The gist is this: God does care for me.  He does know what he is doing.  He will reward my faith and the work I do to show that faith.  I thank Aramis for his platform to share this adventure in the journey.  I thank my friends and family who pray for me and wish me well.  I am humbled by the ones both anonymous and known who have given to help me.  Faith works.  God is good all the time.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Losses Not Our Own

Greetings Dear Reader,

I have mentioned often my favorite diner.  I go there Friday mornings for breakfast.  Since my first visit a particular waitress has been accepting and kind to me.  She is good to my children and grandchildren.  She always treats us well.

Angel of Grief - Daniel Hartwig
Yesterday as she poured my coffee she informed me that her mother had just passed away.  Tears filled her eyes as she accepted condolence and comfort from me.  She if from Israel and will not be able to return home for the family funeral.  She sat with me for a few moments and expressed her pain and loss.

Last year my dear friends Ashley and James lost a daughter suddenly and unexpectedly.  As a parent who has lost a child I can tell you that this inconsolable pain.  As they worked through their grief I could see the love and faith they carry.  There was little I could do for them but pray.

I think that this is a very central piece of following Christ that we carry a bit of the losses of others with us.  Every man’s death diminishes me.  Every soul is a soul that is God’s and he calls it back to his presence when he wishes.  We do not understand or accept always.  It is up to us to care for each other until acceptance is possible.

My friends’ losses are my losses.  Their pain must be my pain as well. I cannot feel it the way they do but I can assure them that I know loss and accept theirs with love and compassion.  Not knowing what to “do” for those in pain must not keep us from loving, listening, comforting, and praying.  It must not drive us away but pull us closer.

There is not loss of life that does not impact me.  Death keeps me honest by asking constantly if I care.  It keeps me honest by reminding me that everyone I encounter deserves my best in love, compassion, and kindness.   Any hope of faithfully following Christ must include for me the sure knowledge that there are no losses that are not my own.  After all, there are no losses that are not Christ’s as well.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn
