The Names of God – First Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

Names are amazing things.  They have a great deal of power.  If someone knows your name they can communicate in a unique way.  Names have meaning and in some cultures a name changes over time to reflect the person.

Recently a friend gave me a framed list of some of the names of God.  It is beautiful and hanging in my office as I write this.  It caused me to ponder some of the ways in which God is addressed by others.  If I truly wish to know God then I must consider who he is within the names he provides for us to know him.

God is limitless in who he is.  Plumbing the depths of this is beyond me, but perhaps through the journey of his names I can learn how to better love him.  Walk with me if you wish.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkahmka na Adonai,
We will praise and lift You high,
El Shaddai.

Through your love and through the ram,
You saved the son of Abraham;
Through the power of your hand,
Turned the sea into dry land.
To the outcast on her knees,
You were the God who really sees,
And by Your might,
You set Your children free.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkahmka na Adonai,
We will praise and lift You high,
El Shaddai.

Through the years You made it clear,
That the time of Christ was near,
Though the people couldn't see
What Messiah ought to be.
Though Your Word contained the plan,
They just would not understand
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of Your Son.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the name.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkahmka na Adonai,
I will praise you 'till I die,
El Shaddai.

Wishing you joy in the journey,

Aramis Thorn

Mat 13:52 So Jesus said to them, "That is why every writer who has become a disciple of Christ’s rule of the universe is like a home owner. He liberally hands out new and old things from his great treasure store."
