Prologue to Epilogue ~ The Lower Bulb

Greetings Dear Reader,

A few evenings ago, the temperature was in the low seventies and sunlight cascaded onto the porch that wraps around the house where I currently reside.  I went outside for a bowl of my favorite Black Cavendish and to ponder how to deal with a particularly troublesome character in my current novel.  The warm sun and the song of a bird I did not know soon lulled me into a nap as the last of the Cavendish embered away in my bowl.

I dreamt of the charter I was pondering and resolved my confusion as to how to deal with him.  I awakened inspired and ready to return to the page and keys.  Then my mind turned to the nap itself.  I do not like taking naps.  The birdsong and the warmth called me to close my eyes further and continue to sleep in the light.  I quickly noted the solution to my dilemma and closed my eyes again.

My mind turned to less pleasant musings and filled with the things in the past that haunt me.  When I awakened again, the sun had slipped behind the mountain and the temperature had descended as well.  The bowl of Cavendish and I were both chilled.  My mind was filled with thoughts of the past that were painful and resurging guilt for failures in my rearview that I cannot change.

The lower globe of the hourglass is the past.  It is where the ashes of time that have passed through the pinch fall.  It is filled with memories awful and ill, joyous and beautiful.  It is not something through which we can sift without danger.  The past failures and hurts lie there wanting to rob and accuse.  They desire to steal from us in every way possible.

We are forgiven of our failures.  We are loved beyond compare by the God of the universe.  We allow the past to overrule these truths.  Our minds dwell on things that not only waste imagination and energy, but they hinder and damage our journey.  Regrets tear at us.  Ashes of our failures choke us.  We dwell on the past and wish for things that we cannot change.

The past longs to devour the future.  It hungers for attention and demands that we waste our time on it.  Instead, we must let the past be what it is.  We must allow it to be the repository of things we remember fondly, the blessings we have had, and the lessons we have learned.  Guilt and shame must be fleeting motivators to deal with our failures properly, positively, and permanently.  Loss, pain, and suffering are not things on which to dwell.  They are opportunities to seek the Light in the darkness.

Instead, Dear Reader, we return to the nap.  We go back to sleep in the light and dine on that which poisons us.  The lower globe is a trap.  It is a place where the ashes of the past will bury and suffocate us if we remain there.  It is never where we belong.  It is the place of death and destruction where we are asleep in the light.

Asleep In The Light – Keith Green

Do you see?
Do you see?
All the people sinking down?
Don't you care?
Don't you care?
Are you gonna let them drown?
How can you be so numb?!
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes,
And pretend the job is done

"Oh, bless me, Lord!
Bless me, Lord!"
You know, it's all I ever hear!
No one aches,
No one hurts,
No one even sheds one tear

But, he cries,
He weeps,
He bleeds,
And he cares for your needs
And you just lay back,
And keep soaking it in
Oh, can't you see such sin?!

'cause he brings people to your door,
And you turn them away
As you smile and say,
"God bless you!
Be at peace!"
And all heaven just weeps,
'cause Jesus came to your door,
You left him out on the street

Open up! open up!
And give yourself away
You see the need,
You hear the cries,
So how can you delay?!
God is calling,
And you are the one
But like Jonah, you run
He told you to speak,
But you keep holding it in
Oh, can't you see such sin?!

The world is sleeping in the dark,
That the church just can't fight,
'cause it's asleep in the light!
How can you be so dead?!
When you've been so well famed
Jesus rose from the grave,
And you!
You can't even get out of bed!
Oh, Jesus rose from the dead!
Come on, get out of your bed!

How can you be so numb?!
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes,
And pretend the job is done!
You close your eyes,
And pretend the job is done!
Don't close your eyes,
Don't pretend the job is done

Come away! come away!
Come away with me, my love!
Come away from this mess,
Come away with me, my love!
Come away from this mess!
Come away with me, my love!
Come away,
Come away with me my love!

Wishing you joy in the journey,
