Greetings Dear Reader,
Yesterday we delved into the delivery aspect of our need for
moment by moment following. The thing
from which we seek delivery is evil. Some
translations render this “the Evil One.”
Either way, we need delivery from evil even when we do not see it.
Even though many deny it, we live in a broken fallen
world. Our evil acts turned our biosphere
from a life-based to a death-based one.
In my life, I have seen things that are inherently evil accepted as common
and even called good. I will not debate
the individual items that evidence this here but you may ask me about it if you
wish. There is evil that we confront in
almost every moment of the journey.
It is also true that the greatest trick of the Evil One is
to get us to believe he does not exist.
We hear this and chuckle at it.
Still, he roams, “like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” He never takes a day off, is on vacation, or
post an out of office message. Because
that is true, he works every moment to deter us from the journey home.
When Jesus asks us to request delivery from evil, he is
asking us to allow the Father to protect us.
He is asking us to follow him so that we can be protected from the Evil One. He is showing that there is a way out of the
mess; that we can be armed and armored to be protected from it. Faith and following is not simply a method of
living. It is not simple mysticism to
get us through our struggles.
We are in a conflict and it is truly on a universal
scale. It is a conflict for us. We have manufactured and accepted countless
distractions to keep us from the reality of it.
We are at risk in every moment.
We are in danger every day. If
that sounds paranoid or delusional so be it.
I am not asking that we be fanatical.
I am asking that we see that there is a battle for our hearts and minds
and the one who truly loves us is asking us to choose.
We choose always. We often
choose without thinking. It is up to us to choose wisely. Even if I am absolutely wrong, choosing to
love and be kind and good is wise. It is
not doing all the things we should not that is the focus. It is following the one who loves us and his
example to love others. This is the
greatest way to help others be delivered from evil.
