Why Church ~ Where is the Focus?

Greetings Dear Reader,

When we attend church there is usually some kind of corporate worship.  The style of that worship varies depending on the flavor of the church.  One can find everything from formal seated hymn singing to rolling in the aisle, pew jumping abandon.  None of these are wrong.

It is not the style of worship that matters as much as the focus.  The church should engage in corporate worship.  The type of engagement that matters is completely internal but has an external expression.  This means that as I look at church, I must consider if the corporate worship is done in a way that truly gives glory and praise to the Father.

In order for this to be true, worship must proceed from our spirit.  It must be the eternal part of us reaching for the eternal Father.  Our corporate worship has to be the spirit of every individual yearning to connect to the Father in recognition of who he is.  That communication can be verbal, melodic, or physical but it must rise from the spirit.

The other aspect of worship that must be present for it to be genuine is that it must be done with integrity.   It is impossible to do this without the former condition being true.  It is also vital that the worship flow from a place of honesty.  This means that hypocrisy, distraction, or disingenuousness preclude worship.  Only an honest soul can worship the Father effectively.

This all means that if we view a church to check it out or to understand the purpose of church, we must look at the worship in terms of its focus and integrity.  If the focus is on the  Father it will be obvious.  It must be about the Father and not our wants and needs.  It must be about our love of the Father responding to his love for us.

The point is that the church is a place we gather to worship and, therefore, it has a purpose.  If we do not engage in the worship, that is our own fault.  We must be in the presence of our fellow travelers to engage in corporate worship.  It is a part of the purpose of the church and we are obligated to fulfill it.

I enjoy worship and do not always participate in the same way that those around me do.  This is part of making sure that I worship in truth.  There are other reasons that the church is vital but connecting to the Father is primary.  One of the ways in which he wishes that connection is when we join together to worship him.  Listen to the pronouns, Dear Reader.  They will help you see what the focus of worship is.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
