The Chosen ~ S02E02 “I Saw You”

Greetings Dear Reader,

There will be spoilers.  This is your only warning.  This BLOG series will walk through each episode of the first two seasons of the amazing show The Chosen available free to watch at the link.  If you have not seen it, I encourage you to do so.  It is by far the best adaptation of the Gospels to film I have ever encountered.

In this episode, we encounter Phillip and Nathanial.   I love how Phillip is presented as experienced because he has been working with John the Baptist already.  He immediately finds ways to help the others with work.  What he does also is begin to see the value in Matthew even though Simon insults him.

He stresses to Matthew the truth.  It is not our past that matters once we encounter Jesus.  He listens and has compassion when Matthew explains his difficulty in relating to other humans.  I find this moment so reflective of how Jesus sees the unique value in each of us.  Phillip validates Matthew’s uniqueness and reassures him of his place with Jesus.

The ground is level when we come to Christ.  We are all in possession of the same need.  We all have to learn how the way in which we are created is a gift to the Kingdom designed by the Father.  Our uniqueness is what Christ chooses.  When we try to mute or change who we are created to be, we fail and are miserable.  When we reject others based on who they are, we fail to love the Father and the person as we are meant to love.

When Matthew expresses his doubts, Phillip tells him, “Jesus chose you.  That is where your confidence comes from now.”  Phillip is the first disciple willing to guide Matthew into understanding who he is to Jesus.  We must all be this way.  The quirks and foibles of others are never a good reason to reject them.  Their sinful past must be forgiven to the degree we need forgiveness.  We all had the same disease and it was terminal.  Without being called by Christ, it would have killed us eternally.

This means I must love everyone if I am to follow Christ.   It requires me to lay aside judgment and replace it with grace and mercy.  It is in following without regard to another’s past we find the capacity to leave behind our own.  Yesterday is gone.  It cannot be changed or altered in any way.  Still, the Father in his omniscience chooses to forget our sin when it is forgiven.  We must see all who come to Christ as new creatures.  My only relationship with their past must be helping them to recover from the damage done by it, Dear Reader.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
