The Chosen ~ S02E01b “Thunder:”

Greetings Dear Reader,

There will be spoilers.  This is your only warning.  This BLOG series will walk through each episode of the first two seasons of the amazing show The Chosen available free to watch at the link.  If you have not seen it, I encourage you to do so.  It is by far the best adaptation of the Gospels to film I have ever encountered.

Season two opens in Sychar.  This Samaritan town figures highly in The Judas Scroll, and will even more in A Thieves’ Tale.  Two prongs of this episode set in Sychar tug at my soul.  The first is the clear way Jesus includes the Samaritans in his ministry.  He erases the lines of prejudice so long-held between Samaritans and Jews.   He teaches them, loves them, and serves them.  The second prong hinges on this one.

The brothers, James and John are sent to plow a field and plant it.  They discuss how much they hate Samaritans whilst they are doing it.  This thread flows throughout the episode culminating in them wanting to call down lighting on some Samaritans who insult them.  Jesus restrains them and names them The Sons of Thunder.

In blinding contrast are the Samaritans who have recognized Jesus as the Messiah.  One of them gives Simon a free skin of wine saying, “Anything for him.”  The town of Sychar is accepting Jesus on a large scale.  That is not enough to break the pride of the brothers.  They make jokes about Samaria having too many Samaritans.

I hear these same voices among my fellow Christ-followers.   They reject others over doctrinal differences.  They make memes and jokes about what others believe instead of using their voice to promote the love of the Father realized through the Son.  Even to jest negatively about the beliefs of others is a failure to love.

If we are of real faith and following, we cannot afford to let our idle words mock anyone.  We are to be identified by our love for our fellow followers.  Our division, even when lighthearted keeps those who do not believe from seeing Jesus.  I must not engage and this.  I must seek to be a peacemaker with all who love Jesus and seek to follow him well.  I do not have to agree with him or her but my obligation to love and compassion is irrefutable.

If we fail to love those who love Jesus, our faith ignores the essence of who we are called to be.  We are not following in faith.  We are taking the name of Jesus for our own purposes.  We will give an account for every idle word we say, post, or pontificate that is unloving toward another believer.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
