The Right to Change ~ History

Greetings Dear Reader,

We all have a history.  We have all heard the history of others.  I grew up in an era where they taught that Columbus was a great explorer and that he discovered America.  He did demonstrate that the world was not flat.  He also demonstrated that one man can systematically destroy an entire culture.

We all know that we get history from those in power at the time.  We learn about what happened through the lens of power and politics.  What I think we fail to see is that we do this on a lesser scale as well.  Our opinions on the history of others become our view of them depending on the winds of favor and family.  We see others through the eyes of their past, often denying them a different future.

Perhaps one of the reasons we are required to forgive daily is so that we do not carry another’s failures into a new day.  Perhaps our issues with anger, resentment, and relationships all have tendrils into the current day because we fail to let the past be passed and give it new life.  We allow history to be the determiner of the present and even reach into the future.

We all have reason to hold over hurts and harm that others have visited upon us.  We are, however, commanded to love and forgive every single day.  We are required to leave that which is past where it is and moved forward in kindness, mercy, and grace.  Columbus had been one of my heroes as a boy.  I had to work through my anger at what he had done and allowed to be done.  I had to forgive and realize that all of our resentment at things past serves only to harm today.

Whether it is global or local, we cannot undo what has been done and we need to allow others the dry ground to change.  We need to let love and grace own the present at every turn.  Love has the power to overcome anything if we allow it.  Allowing may need to be active, intentional.  We have to demonstrate our love toward others by holding nothing against them and allowing them to change.

No matter how hard we wish it, we cannot undo the past.  We can, however, see that today includes the hope that we and others can change for the better Dear Reader.  Further, there is nothing gained by failing to forgive the dead.  That can only harm us and it will not reach them, for they can no longer change.  Any power they have over us is the power we give them today.  If this is true, perhaps it is time for us to change.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
