Greetings Dear Reader,
We have all heard it.
Whether it is “well-meaning” or insipid we have heard others say things
like, “oh he is always late.” Perhaps
the phrase was more sinister, “I would not trust her,” or “he starts things but
will not finish them.” Sadly, I have
even heard parents say things like this about their own children.
I have already discussed gossip. This is one of the mental exercises that we employ
that is a seed to gossip. We put people
in boxes in our minds. We categorize them
by their faults and predispose others to think the same of them. We carry an image of them in our minds that
is neither kind nor loving.
We do not wish the same for ourselves. Being judged by the weakness we indulge is
not the suit we wish to wear. We long to
be known by things other than our weaknesses yet we see others through that
very lens. Thus, we are guilty of hypocrisy
and worse, we violate the command to love others as we would be treated.
It is in this paradox of contradiction that we all find
ourselves at times. It is in this very box
that we place others where we do not wish to dwell. It is, therefore, imperative that we change
the lens to that of love, kindness, and grace.
It is our duty to be above the boxes and instead make room for others to
rise as well. Our portion is to love
others and see beyond their faults to better things.
An exercise of mine when I find myself putting others in
boxes is to ponder good things about the person. It is all too easy to see only the faults and
forget the positive. I know several who
take on an offense over something and any good that preceded it is wiped away
as if it never existed. It is necessary
Dear Reader that we see to Christ’s example and follow him in seeing all people
equally. There are no boxes in Christ,
only the freedom to become our better selves.
In this, we can give others the love and the right to change.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
