Greetings Dear Reader,
We are all hearing news about COVID-19 or the
Coronavirus. With each serious problem
comes the flood of memes, jokes, and lampoons that seem to entertain us in the
midst of trouble. As I ponder the
problem, I also consider the things that are the real concerns with this
pandemic.
It troubles me greatly that the Coronavirus has actually
impacted the sales of Corona Beer negatively.
This beer from Mexico has been erroneously connected with the COVID-19
virus. A recent survey suggested that
16% of the people polled could not dissociate the beer from the virus. How do we reconcile that people actually believe
that the two are connected in any way? This
points to the lack of practical education in our society. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that the
beer is from Mexico and the virus is from China.
Another posted meme made it clear how much we need some
comic relief from the fear of the virus.
It seems that an Amazon employee in Seattle has a confirmed case of
Coronavirus. The meme pointed out that
if we ordered within two hours, we could all have the virus within two days.
My genuine concern here is that there will be 16% or more of
my fellow humans who will think they can get Coronavirus from shopping on
Amazon. If this happens, I may fully
choose to believe that we are doomed as a culture. It seems plausible that there are those who
will see ordering online as a viable virus transmitter; especially if their
antivirus is not up to date.
There is also the reminder to wash our hands. We are supposed to do it for twenty seconds
and there are songs to sing whilst doing it.
Then we can liberally apply hand sanitizer if we can find any left in
the stores. I saw one place selling a 16-ounce
bottle for $800. Let the profiteering
begin. Oh, and if you buy it by the case
it comes in bubble-wrap inflated with air from China.
Other questions plague me relative to the virus. Does this mean that we will see a lag in
popularity for Weird Al because of his 9 Coronas parody? Will lime sales be hurt with the decline in Corona
sales? Will we learn from this how
little control we have over the world?
Perhaps we can take another approach and be sensible. Washing our hands is good. It is wise to be vigilant about our health in
a reasonable way. We may wish to avoid
Chinese beer but a cold Corona is a good idea.
What is most important is that we realize just how foolish we will look
with masks that cover our faces and not our fear. Have we already forgotten the image from the
summer of SARS? Do we believe that our
worry and panic will protect us?
I have to believe that the Father even has his hand on
this. I know that it will be difficult
for some. Caution and care are wise. Worry is worthless. I will focus on the things that matter. I will laugh at the memes. I will care about the lives impacted by
actually being sick. Perhaps we should
just keep calm, have a Corona, and wash our hands whilst recalling that God is
not surprised by any of this.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
