Greetings Dear Reader,
I wonder what you think of when you think of power. Is it the people who control the wealth of
the world? Perhaps it is that person in
the family that directs everything. It
could be the boss at work who micromanages to the point of exhaustion for everyone.
As I journey away from valuing power and control, I learn that they are enchanting, enthralling, and addictive. My purposes for controlling things were logical to me at the time. It was fear that drove me, but we will speak of that later this week. I mention it now because it was not the power I craved but rather the ability to control things due to my fear.
There are those who thirst for power. They would rather have it than love or
money. They spend their energy obtaining,
holding, and using it. They are enchanted
by the way in which they direct and control others. They think that they wield power when, in
truth, it is power that controls them.
They become thralls to the keeping of power once they have acquired it. Power may be easy for them to obtain but it
is very difficult to hold and wield on its own.
I have found that leaving power and control behind is difficult. It is also important that I not leave a void
where it was. Replacing it with something
more enthralling and enchanting is the key.
We cannot simply leave power behind but must find the power that
sustains, builds, and fulfills. That
power is love.
When we fill the void of power with love, we find
freedom. We discover that love, wielded in
the Spirit of Christ, crushes our need for control. It fills the void in us. It gives perspective to all of our thoughts
and actions. It shows us that the Father
is in control of all things.
When I see that control is an enchanted illusion, I can
recognize that the Father controls all things. I can focus on my love of the Father and
looking for his direction through the Spirit and in following the Son. In a world where so many are enchanted with grasping
for power, I can leave it behind. I can,
instead, love others in hope that they will see and embrace the power of love
and its freeing enchantment. That is power
worth wielding, Dear Reader.
The
Things We Leave Behind – Michael Card
There sits Simon, so foolishly wise
Proudly he's tending his nets
Then Jesus calls and the boats drift away
And all that he owns he forgets
But more than the nets, he abandoned that day
He found that his pride was soon drifting away
And it's hard to imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
Matthew was mindful of taking the tax
And pressing the people to pay
Hearing the call, he responded in faith
And followed the light and the way
And leaving the people so puzzled he found
The greed in his heart was no longer around and
And it's hard to imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
Every heart needs to be set free
From possessions that hold it so tight
'Cause freedoms not found in the things that we own
It's the power to do what is right
With Jesus, our only possession
And giving becomes our delight
And we can't imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
We show a love for the world in our lives
By worshiping goods we possess
Jesus has laid all our treasures aside
And love God above all the rest
'Cause when we say no, to the things of the world
We open our hearts to the love of the Lord and
It's hard to imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
And when we say no, to the things of the world
We open our hearts to the love of the Lord and
It's hard to imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
Oh, and it's hard to imagine the freedom we find
From the things we leave behind
Wishing you joy in the journey,
