Greetings Dear Reader,
In the short-lived series Firefly, one of the central characters,
Kaylee may be one of the most genuinely optimistic people written. Among a crew that is jaded and grim, she is
the one who sees the shiny in things.
She is the one who cares more about the people than the plunder. Shiny to Kaylee is something that is good or
beautiful and not possessions.
Over the years people have used this application of the word shiny for different things. Some people are attracted to shiny possessions and refer to Kaylee when they see something they want. The problem with being enchanted by possessions is that they do not satisfy. They lose their shine and we need something new to get back the feeling of having, of possessing. We become enchanted with the getting and that too is not shiny.
Another kind of shiny is more spiritual. We embrace whatever thought is new or systems
of worship that are popular. We follow Christ
in our own way instead of the way he prescribes. We think that the shiny new way somehow includes
that original one. We turn our faith into
idolatry by following the Christ our culture demands instead of the one who is
real. No matter how shiny it may seem, we
can only follow Christ if we do so in reality.
That is where the real shiny is anyway.
We must not get distracted by shiny things that are not true
or of real value. The quest for shiny
must be like Kaylee. It must be for
things that are good and genuine. It
must be that what we find shiny is that which is founded in the love, grace,
and mercy of Christ.
I long to possess things and most of the time I am
disappointed how quickly their shine diminishes. I am also one who used to be drawn to
theology that fits my proclivities. I
want to be enchanted by that which is eternally shiny. I want to seek that which will not wither,
fade, or rust. I wish to possess
optimism based on hope and faith.
What I must do is follow the light of Christ in all things and
not be enchanted or distracted by lesser reflections that deter me from the
path. Where I must seek is in the genuine
character of Christ and not in the versions of him that are popular or
new. If I can do this, Dear Reader, then
things will be truly shiny.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
