Carpentry 101 ~ Qualifications for the Job

Greetings Dear Reader,

So, if I got up one morning in the first century wanting to be a carpenter, what would I do?  Unfortunately, that is not how it usually worked.  If your father was a carpenter, you learned to be a carpenter.  Trades were passed on from father to son.  Farmers taught their sons to farm.  Shepherds passed on the caring of sheep.

What then, did a young carpenter need to be successful?  Since modern carpentry tools were not available, he would need strength.  Wrestling raw timber to form beams, boards, and planks took strength and skill.  One would need to also perform these transformations with patience.  It takes time to go from timber to table.

One would need to learn how to tell good from bad raw wood.  It would require intelligence and wisdom to choose which wood to use for which project.  The entire idea of turning wood into useful and artful things requires creativity and vision.  Carpentry is a trade that is also artistry.  It is creation using that which is provided by the Creator.

It would require one to learn how to join things with strength and harmony.  The fitting together of joints and joists demands careful measuring, cutting, and melding.  The fasteners used to must be suited for the wood and intended use of the item.  That which was created must not be easily taken apart.

This benefits us because we see that the human aspect of Jesus lived a vocation that required a balance of creativity and skill.  There is a balance to this profession that requires thoughtful persistent attention.  Care and skill must combine to bring forth the practical and the beautiful.  I will say this often during this series Dear Reader.  It is no accident that Jesus was born into the family of a carpenter.  We must all learn from what it takes to be a good one.  I must see the beauty and grace in the creation of things from wood and allow the Carpenter to shape me as well.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
