Greetings Dear Reader,
When considering carpentry in the Middle East one must think
about the wood available. Oak and cedar
were often employed. Pines and fir trees
are part of what has always been there.
Olive wood was used for decorative or special pieces. Other wood from around the region was
available via the trade routes.
The point is that a carpenter must select the proper raw
materials for the project at hand. He
must learn and understand what wood is right for each use. The application determines what is
needed. It is not just choosing hard or
softer wood. One must consider how a
wood ages, takes to shaping, or looks when finished.
The raw materials must then be prepared for a specific
use. Each wood, once chosen must be culled
from the tree, cured to the proper dryness, and cut to suit the application. Sometimes the wood is treated to withstand
the weather. Sometimes it is stained or
sealed. There is a journey that must occur
before the wood can be used for the purpose the carpenter intends. Jesus learned this from his father in preparation
for his work as a carpenter.
We all start off as raw material. We all have the potential to be crafted into something
useful and beautiful. If you define
beauty as only that which is aesthetically pleasing, then you are missing the artistry
of a carpenter. A true beam that is strong
and supportive, a well-balanced wheel, or a door that is plumb both ways are
all expressions of artistry.
The idea that we are this same beautiful potential escapes
us. The purpose of the Carpenter in part
is to show us that he can make something beautiful out of us even without
flaws and blemishes. Every life can
become something amazing when shaped and cured by the Carpenter. We are all material worth using and Jesus
will never relegate us to the scrap pile.
Dear Reader, I long to see the beauty that is you as the Master
Carpenter crafts you to his purpose. I
think if we anticipate this in each other we will find it easier to be more
loving and gracious.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
