Greetings Dear Reader,
“For our captors there required of us songs”
There is a scene in the movie, “The Return of the King”
where Pippin is required to sing for Denethor the mad steward of Gondor. Denethor is feasting whilst his only surviving
son rides into battle against great odds.
That Denethor requires entertainment is sad enough. Further, the song expresses the hopelessness
of the moment. Having never been in such
dire circumstance I cannot fully understand the pain in that moment for Pippin
or for the people of Jerusalem held captive in Babylon.
We must remember that Babylon was a beautiful city whose
gardens were one of the great wonders of the ancient world. It is vital to our understanding that it is
likely the rulers of that city thought they were being kind to their
captives. We know from Daniel that they
were given work and often well rewarded for faithfulness in that work. We also know that there was madness to spare
in those kings.
I see forms of madness in our culture. I see the dire nature of the world as it becomes
increasingly dark. In the imposing and
impending darkness, we find ourselves on the edge of night as well. The darkness will eventually fall and the
world will be in dire straits. We also
are required to sing as the darkness closes in on us.
The difference, Dear Reader, is that it is the Father who
wishes us to sing. He wishes for us to
be “filled with the spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and
songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always
giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ.”
We can sing to ourselves as we walk through a world filled
with challenges, struggles, and hardship if we choose to remember that in doing
so we are walking with Christ. We can
sing one of the songs of Zion for our captors and perhaps help them see what it
is we love about the one we follow.
Nothing here is permanent expect the love we give and the
hope we offer. It is hard at times and
even painful. We still must remember to
find the faith to follow and obey. I can
tell you from experience that music is one of the primary ways I find my way
out of the darkness. It is why I pay close
attention to songs that get stuck in my brain.
This is not yet the answer to my current earworm, but it
reminds me that the response to being asked to sing a holy song should always be
to do so in faith that it will aid someone if it is only me. Pippin’s Song is sad but it reminds us that
we are not at the end of our journey yet.
He reminds us that even when it seems deeply dark, we have a Light to
follow. Shall we keep walking together
Dear Reader?
Pippin’s
Song: Edge of Night – Return of the King
Home is behind, the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight.
Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade
All shall fade
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight.
Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade
All shall fade
Wishing you joy in the journey,
