The Quest for Peace ~ What Do You Hear?

Greetings Dear Reader,

I mentioned earlier the concept of two ears and one mouth; we should listen twice as much as we speak.  We discussed the need to understand and how vital it is to genuinely see other humans.  It is time to take inventory of what we are hearing.

On the surface, there is this ugly crusty layer of humanity that we all see when others are acting up or acting out.  We can easily see and hear the faults of those around us.  We often fail to see our own foibles unless someone points them out.  Still, they are there.  We can learn if we choose to hear what others are saying.

When I interact with people, I constantly receive messages in the way others respond or speak.  If I truly listen the information is there regarding their needs, wants, opinions, and condition.  There is a wealth of understanding to be had if we choose to hear others rather than filter them through our own thoughts and opinions.  We can see others better and, therefore, love them more deeply if we set aside our perspectives and hear them.

This is beyond listening.  It is putting into play our whole being to hear the needs of others.  When we make those needs our concern, we can make strides for peace.  The surface things are rarely the answer.  It is what others truly need that we must discern.  Sometimes it requires meeting the felt need first.  It is always love that will let us see through to the real needs.  It is the selflessness of grace and kindness that will help us hear what others are saying.

Selflessness is at the heart of hearing others.  Love is what allows us to become selfless.  The desire for others to have peace is the beginning of a great act of love.  As we turn the desire into part of our lifestyle, we become harder to offend and we seek the good of others over our wants.  We begin to replicate the beauty and grace of Jesus in our limited capacity.

If I can daily put on this attitude of selflessness, I can begin to love others in the pursuit of peace.  I can see people for who they are and not what I wish they were.  It can reveal the potential they have and I can help them become who the Father created them to be by loving them and meeting them where they are.  In doing all of this, Dear Reader, I can move closer to who I am supposed to be as well.  Let us look beneath the noise together and you can tell me what you hear.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
