Greetings Dear Reader,
We have to leave Abraham in the dust. Four thousand years ago though, the Father made promises to him that are still growing toward completion. We will stick with his family because the promise that matters finds its growth in them.
For reasons that are too lengthy to go into here, Abraham’s great-grandsons move to Egypt during a plague. Eventually, they are enslaved by the Egyptians and remain so for 400 years. Then, in an obvious show of power and direction, the Father uses a year of supernatural plagues to free over a million descendants of Abraham and begin the journey back to the land that is promised to them.
On the way there, their leader, Moses stops by Mount Sini to meet with God and establish the Law. They have been led by pillars of fire and cloud. The people have seen all the plagues. Mana rains down every morning to feed them. Rocks give them water when they are thirsty. None of this, however, is enough for them.
They decide that Moses is taking too long and build a calf out of the gold provided for them when they left Egypt. Being daily witnesses to the provision and care of the Father is not enough. Moses finds them worshiping the calf when he returns from getting the Law from the Creator.
The first commandment is to love the Father with all that we are. He finds witnesses to the power of God rejecting him. They cry aloud that he is not enough. All he wants from them is loyalty. He only asks that they love him. We all pridefully say we would not worship the calf; that all of that would be enough for us to remain faithful. I want to be that faithful.
Let us then suppose that we agree that what they do is wrong. What do you suppose is a golden calf in our lives? There are things for each of us that easily have us refusing to love the Father with all we are, Dear Reader. When I am in the midst of my own heart and its desires, I do not always remember to love the Father as I should. We are too smart to worship a shiny metal calf. We worship things like kickoff time, shoe sales, and motorboats instead.
The reality is that we turn many good things into golden calves. We would not call it worship but it gets our love, time, and attention. We compromise our love for the Father for the sake of that event, possession, or person. In that, we are no different than those wandering in the desert four thousand years ago. All of those supernatural events are not enough. They should be. The Father provided their example for our benefit as well. But wait; there is more.
So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt – Keith Green
So you wanna go back to Egypt
Where it's warm and secure
Are sorry you bought the one-way ticket
When you thought you were sure
You wanted to live in the land of promise
But now it's getting so hard
Are you sorry you're out here in the desert
Instead of your own back yard
Eating leaks and onions by the Nile
Ooh what breath for dining out in style
Ooh, my life's on the skids
Building the pyramids
Well there's nothing to do but travel
And we sure travel a lot
'Cause it's hard to keep your feet from moving
When the sand gets so hot
And in the morning it's manna hotcakes
We snack on manna all day
And we sure had a winner last night for dinner
Flaming manna souffle
Well we once complained for something new to munch
The ground opened up and had some of us for lunch
Ooh, such fire and smoke
Can't God even take a joke? Huh? NO!
So you wanna go back to Egypt
Where your friends wait for you
You can throw a big party and tell the whole gang
That what they said was all true
And this Moses acts like a big shot
Who does he think he is?
Well it's true that God works lots of miracles
But Moses thinks they're all his
Oh we're having so much trouble even now
Why'd he get so mad about that c-c-c-cow (that golden calf)
Moses seems rather idle
He just sits around; he just sits around and writes the Bible!
Oh, Moses, put down your pen!
What? Oh no, manna again?
Oh, manna waffles
Manna burgers
Manna bagels
Fillet of manna
Manna-Cotti
BaManna bread!
Wishing you joy in the journey,
