I want you to imagine with me for a moment. You are considered to be the friend of God. He comes to have lunch with you. He talks with you about his plans and even considers your opinion. This is the case with Abraham.
So, at lunch one day God brings up the subject of children. You do not have any and you and your wife are old. God says you are going to have a son. Your wife laughs. God says you are going to name your son Isaac, which means laughter. Then, after knowing God in person you make a choice. Your wife, Sarah, tells you to have a child with her servant. You listen to your wife when God has promised you face to face that you and Sarah will have a son. You now have two sons. As is God’s way, he keeps his promises. He promised to make your son a great nation. He does so for both. They grow into nations that are constantly at odds with each other.
It was not enough that God made you, thinks about you constantly, gave you land big enough for a nation, and promised you face to face that you would have a son. You decided to tweak the deal to hurry things along. The Father is still going to keep his promises to you but you have sent the message loud and clear to your friend. His promises are not enough.
I have the advantage of a record of God keeping his promises. He asks me to have faith. He asks that I love him and have faith that he will keep his word. The Father is showing love through his actions with Abraham and promised that I would benefit from it. He has kept this promise through Jesus and there is more yet to come.
That Father is constantly asking that I see that he is enough. Through Job and Abraham, the Father shows me that he is enough. He asks me if his working with both of them, one in secret at first and one always openly is not enough. I should make this all that I need to see the Father a sufficient to all that I need. The truth, Dear Reader, is that we do not. God is enough for all that we need and he proves it through Abraham. But wait, there is more.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
