Chameleon ~ Opening Thoughts

Greetings Dear Reader,

When I was younger there was a time when the world of Christ-centered music went through a great change.  This change began when folks like Larry Norman started making what would be called Jesus Music.  Some of it was great and some of it was mediocre.

What emerged was a move to make Jesus music in every genre.  As part of that growth, a band called Petra gave us some serious rock anthems that reminded us of who Jesus is and what we are supposed to be as his followers.  If you dislike this music, I will ask that you grant me a little indulgence.

I have about half a terabyte of music on my phone.  If you do not know what that means, I will explain.  I could listen to music all day and night without repeating a song for about thirty days.  I have loaded a great deal of my favorite music to listen to as I travel.   Yesterday one of Petra’s songs from the 1981 album, Never Say Die had its turn and it astounded me.

The song, Chameleon is below.  The relevance it has for today overwhelms me.  I was talking with my friend, Samantha and she recalled that Petra was one of her favorites as a teen.  The song stayed in my head most of yesterday and I was ruminating over the things in it that bear pondering.  Please give it a listen and join me as we take a few days to look at the ways in which we either blend in or stand out as Christ-followers.

If you are new to Petra, you may find some delight in a band that produced music spanning four decades that is mostly excellent.  Later I will list a few of my favorites.  As we journey through this song, we will see some things that are frightening, Dear Reader.  We will also discover ways to follow Jesus more closely.  That alone is worth listening to some old rock and roll.  After all, as Petra and KISS reminded us, God gave rock and roll to you.

Chameleon - Petra

You want the best of both worlds
You're not getting either
You seem content to ride the fence
When you know which side is greener

Some run hot, some run cold
Some run from their maker
Some run the risk of losing out
With lukewarm friends and fakers

Chameleon - You blend with your surroundings
Chameleon - No one knows where you come from
Chameleon - You change with every situation
Compromising dedication

You compromise each word you say so inoffensively
You only want to hide behind your anonymity
You struggle for acceptance
And it takes you to extremes
The smile you hide your face behind
Is not all that it seems
Chameleon - You blend with your surroundings
Chameleon - No one knows where you come from
Chameleon - You change with every situation
Compromising dedication

Come out, come out
Come out from among them
Come out, come out
Come out and be free

There is no gray, no neutral ground
There's only black and white
And nothing in between the two
To turn a wrong into right
There is no time for your charade
You've got to make your stand
When salt has lost its savor
The world becomes so bland

Chameleon - You blend with your surroundings
Chameleon - No one knows where you come from
Chameleon - You change with every situation
Compromising dedication

Wishing you joy in the journey,
