Happy Christmas Dear Reader,
There but by the grace of God go I. We hear this often. Sometimes we believe it and sometimes we do
not. If you do not understand it the
explanation is a simple one. Were it not
for God’s grace we would be sick, poor, homeless, or in any other number of unpleasant
situations.
The first thing that this should evoke is gratitude. It is by the Father’s grace that we have
anything. It is he that sends the rains
on the just and the unjust. It is from
the Father that all good things flow.
The primary thing I seek when I consider this is
compassion. When we see others in
plight, we must allow compassion to arise within us. We must not ignore the needs of others. The season of giving must include the
reminder that “thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of
thousands are in want of common comforts”.
There are so many ways to help others available to us through
organizations. If this is the only path
you see, it is enough.
I long to go deeper still.
I want to see the needs around me and find a way to meet them. I never want to turn a blind eye to need or
even to want when it is not out of greed.
I long to be used to comfort and care for others. We can carry Christmas in our hearts throughout
the year by seeing that his attitude about the needs of others is at the heart
of Christmas.
We must remember, Dear Reader, that in the eyes of God we
are all in want. Putting our hearts in
line with helping others is putting our hearts in line with the entire purpose
of Christmas. It is in aligning with meeting
the wants and needs of others that we find that we honor the baby we celebrate.
I promise that if we open our eyes and ears, we will see
needs that we can meet. It becomes then,
a matter of action. It is in the choice
to do something to help others. I do it
in secret whenever possible. We can
haver about the season all we wish but if we do not act, then we are only passing
the time with pleasant thoughts that carry no substance. We could do so much if we only try. Every gift given in the spirit of generosity
and love will make a difference. It will
make a difference to the receiver and to the giver. It will train our hearts to carry Christmas
throughout the year.
Jack Frost and The Hooded
Crow – Ian Anderson
Through long
December nights we talk in words of rain or snow,
While you, through
chattering teeth, reply and curse us as you go.
“Why not spare a
thought this day for those who have no flame,
To warm their bones
at Christmas time?”
Say Jack Frost and
the Hooded Crow.
Now as the last
broad oak leaf falls, we beg: consider this:
there's some who
have no coin to save for turkey, wine or gifts.
No children's
laughter round the fire, no family left to know.
“So lend a warm and
a helping hand,”
say Jack Frost and
the Hooded Crow.
As holly pricks and
ivy clings, your fate is none too clear.
The Lord may find
you wanting; let your good fortune disappear.
All homely comforts
blown away and all that's left to show
Is to share your
joy at Christmas time
With Jack Frost and
the Hooded Crow.
Through long
December nights we talk in words of rain or snow,
while you, through
chattering teeth, reply and curse us as you go.
Why not spare a
thought this day for those who have no flame
to warm their bones
at Christmas time?
Say Jack Frost and
the Hooded Crow.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
