Happy Christmas Dear Reader,
Whilst running errands yesterday I could already feel the difference. I was at both a small local shop and a large
store. It was one of those gray rainy
days where the air was too warm for snow and too cold for comfort all at
once. The diner where I took mum for
dinner was abuzz with talk of decorating and shopping.
The gray day and march of time have people already anxious
about getting things done. In the midst
of that care when I am out and about, I look and listen. My shopping is already complete. I visit the shops to be among other people
seeking and searching. Looking for
opportunities to help or encourage, I search for a few simple odds and ends
that I need. Whilst doing so, I hum a
Christmas song. I try to be loud enough
for the music to reach others but not so voluminous as to be intrusive.
I imagine the Ghost of Christmas Present sprinkling the
Spirit of Christmas among the people. I
consider that there are so many needs of which I am unaware. I pray as I walk to find the person that I
can be of practical assistance to whether it is a small help or something
grander.
It takes my mind off of my own concerns. The practice pushes my spirit to walk among
my fellow travelers and see their need for Christmas joy and all that comes
with it. I never do this without finding
someone to encourage, praise, or help. I
experience many single-serving friendships that I carry as reminders of the
good this effort provides for me and for others.
If I carry Christmas in my heart every day, I can remember to
make mankind my business. It creates a situation
where I can give gifts to strangers and never worry about reciprocation or
personal gain. I want my trade to be in
love, grace, and kindness. Creating
space for it to be a reality is a great way to carry Christmas with me always.
If we are going to accomplish this goal, we must do it intentionally
Dear Reader. I promised you some
practical ways to unlock Christmas as always in our hearts and this is one of
the keys. I would love to hear your
stories of “random” opportunities to share the joy of Christmas with
others. We must never share this venture
to boast, but to encourage others to follow in this joyful part of the journey. If I make mankind my business above all
things, am I not giving Christ what he truly wants.
What
does God Want for Christmas – Darius Rucker
Old man playing Santa Claus
Blue in a town with old Jack Frost
Now he's handing out candy canes and smiles for free
People scoring with their lists
Rushing around to buy those gifts that will
End up wrapped up underneath the tree
I'm sitting at this red light looking at a manger scene
Watching snowflakes kiss that baby
And it makes me think
I wonder what God wants for Christmas
Something that you can't find in a store
Maybe peace on Earth, no more empty seats in church
Might be what's on His wish list
I wonder what God wants for Christmas
What do you give someone
Who gave His only Son
What if we believe in Him
Like He believes in us
I wonder what God wants for Christmas
What might put a smile on His face
Every bubble with no dust, the devil given up
Might be what's on His wish list
I wonder what God wants for Christmas
What kind of gift from you and me
More sister, more brother, more lovin' one another
Yeah I wonder, I wonder what God wants
By now we oughta know what God wants for Christmas
Wishing you joy in the journey,
