Happy Christmas Dear Reader,
I realize that not everyone feels that he or she is
creative. I think that all humans have
creativity in some area. A great mechanic
is as much an artist as a talented musician.
We are all creative in some way.
I also think there is another proof of this. It is one of those things that puts our
thinking into perspective. It is also a
way to deal with some of the problems we face when confronting anxiety. You see, when we worry, we are being
creative. We are using the creative part
of our mind and spirit to imagine things that are bad and create anxiety over
things that may never happen.
Please do not think I am downplaying the reality of anxiety
and the burden it creates. I am,
however, offering a way to carry the spirit of Christmas that may mitigate some
of it. Proverbs 12:25 tells us that “Anxiety
in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” We see others weighed down by the burdens
they carry.
We can invest in lifting the spirits of others just by being
kind. A few months back when I was in a
local shop, I saw a worker there crying.
I did not know the person. I
offered this, “I am not going to pry into your business. I do want you to know that I care.” The individual smiled and thanked me. The next time I was in that shop this person
saw me and came directly to me explaining that my simple act had made a
difference.
Over the months we have become friends. What is not known is that I was worrying
about something far beyond my control that day we met. By being creative about meeting another
person’s needs, I was able to redirect my own creativity from form worry to
help.
If we imagine our way to good thoughts instead of fearful
ones, we are better off. We can lighten
the burdens of others by offering encouragement. Creativity directed toward kindness is never
wasted effort. After all, even if the
other person insists on resisting, it does us good to have done the good
thing. It distracts us from our own
worry.
Further, and more to the point of our discussion, we can
carry Christmas all year round by being a source of encouragement for
others. Tidings of comfort and joy are
not only for December. We can fend off
our own fears by embracing the hope we find in Christmas and sharing it daily
with others. Being creative in being
kind will keep us from wasting creativity on anxiety and fear.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
– Annie Lennox
God rest you merry,
gentlemen,
Let nothing you
dismay,
For Jesus Christ
our Saviour
Was born upon this
day,
To save us all from
Satan's power
When we were gone
astray:
O tidings of
comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of
comfort and joy.
In Bethlehem, in
Israel
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
From God our
heavenly Father
A blessed angel
came,
And unto certain
shepherds
Brought tidings of
the same,
How that in
Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by
name:
O tidings of
comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of
comfort and joy.
Fear not then, said
the Angel
Let nothing you affright
This day is born a Savior
Of a pure Virgin bright
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's pow'r and might
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Let nothing you affright
This day is born a Savior
Of a pure Virgin bright
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's pow'r and might
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
The shepherds at
those tidings
Rejoiced much in
mind,
And left their
flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm
and wind,
And went to
Bethlehem straightway,
This blessed Babe
to find:
O tidings of
comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of
comfort and joy.
But when to
Bethlehem they came,
Whereat this Infant
lay,
They found Him in a
manger,
Where oxen feed on
hay;
His mother Mary
kneeling,
Unto the Lord did
pray:
O tidings of
comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of
comfort and joy.
Now to the Lord
sing praises,
All you within this
place,
And with true love
and brotherhood
Each other now
embrace;
This holy tide of
Christmas
All other doth
deface
O tidings of
comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of
comfort and joy.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
