Greetings Dear Reader,
“Desperado, oh, you
ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home…”
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home…”
We are driven every moment even when we do not realize it. Time rushes through the pinch in the
hourglass at the constant unrelenting speed of life. We are pushed by our pain and hunger toward
home even when we do not know where or what home is. When we resist love and are hard toward it,
we become driven by that void.
The first thing that one should consider is that we are all
headed home. Nothing about the world we
live in is home even when we create a semblance of it. There are many who are driven by their need
for home without realizing that is a need.
When we find our home anywhere but in Christ, we will never be truly
satisfied. When we reject love the pain
of it is multiplied.
Our hunger to be loved and the pain of feeling unloved drive
us to terrible things. I can pin almost
every terrible decision in my life to feeling unloved. I see this hunger in others and the things
they do to feed it. I see the pain in
others but not always soon enough. I have
been often blind to it until I did things that did not satisfy it. I have made wrong choices due to the pain and
hunger of a hard heart. Imagine the impact
if we saw every failure in others as a facet of their need for our love.
It is this pain and hunger that is at the heart of our selfishness
and pride. It is the search for a cure
to that pain that drives us to our hard-heartedness. We range far away from love looking for a
substitute that will never ease our pain or satisfy our hunger. Damaged and starving we see time run through
us becoming an increasing reminder that we do not have what we need.
The moments all become the same as the call of love reminds
us that what we need has always been available to us. It is there, down the trail, at the home we
are all heading toward. We choose to try
and get there alone and it does not work.
The pain of isolation increases and we repeat the patterns of foolish
choices.
It is the same pain and hunger that are intended to drive us
to the Father. His love always satisfies
but we refuse to let him. His love always
comforts but we seek comfort in other ways that instead mock us. We indulge in things that harm us thinking they
will feed us and ease our pain. We feel
the mockery of false substitutes and instead of relenting we amp up our pride
and harden our hearts further.
Nothing but genuine love will satisfy. When we give love and allow love to be given
to us, even the hardest heart will soften.
It is in love that we must do all things Dear Reader. We must even accept love when we do not want
to because it may be another hard heart trying to become flesh again. Time will slip away and no matter how hard we
have become we will find that we can no longer resist the call to cross into
that undiscovered country that has as its foundational law to love and be loved. Why not be prepared for it before we get
there Dear Reader?
Wishing you joy in the journey,
