Desperado, why don't
you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
We all have reasons why when we resist love from others. It may be that we have been hurt once too
often. It could be that that we are
angry or bitter about the past. For, we
may have seen too much or been through too much. We all have our reasons why we are hard and
ride fences.
The thing we rarely see is that we are not thinking
well. We have taken leave of our senses
when we resist love. It does not
work. Being hard-hearted only damages us
over the long haul. I can tell when someone
has hardened his or her heart. It is
always wrong. It is not that the pain is
invalid or the damage is not real. It is
that the only thing that heals is love.
We think that we can resist love but the resistance does more
damage. The hardness hurts us. It grinds away at our being until we become
convinced that our hardness is normal.
Our reasons that are lies become reasonable to us. We do terrible things to each other in order
to protect our fences, walls, and barriers.
Things that should feel good to us cause pain.
We cannot be hard and survive even though we became hard to
do so. That hardness is not armor. It is an iron mask that hides who we really
are. It does not want love. It cannot survive the presence of real
love. The things that guard our heart
are crushed by genuine love. Yet we choose
to remain angry, bitter, and hard toward those we are supposed to allow to love
us.
I have no challenge here Dear Reader except to ask that you
examine the hard places in your heart and ponder their value. Look at the things that keep you out riding
fences and ask if they are honestly reasonable.
Are they healthy? Do they make
you a better human; a better Christ follower?
I know that mine do not.
I have my reasons for the fences I ride and the hard places in my
heart. They all become invalid in the
light of honest love. It then comes to
me to choose if I am going to remain hard and solitary or if I am going to
allow love to heal me. More on this
tomorrow.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
