Questions God Will Never Ask ~ Play Ball

Greetings Dear Reader,

If you keep up with my writing you know that I love baseball.  I especially love the Atlanta Braves.  It is a love steeped in my personal history and then learning about the philosophy that surrounds what I consider a great sport.  Do not abandon me Dear Reader.  I am not about to spend your time talking incessantly about baseball and its virtues.  I will do that in a few weeks.

It is that I did not wish to be hypocritical in this topic, so, it is necessary to admit my love of the sport.  I am concerned about the obsession we have with sports as a pastime.  Billions of dollars are poured into and come out of this engine of commerce that is centered on games.  Let that sink in for a moment.

People are played millions of dollars to play a game.  Instead of remembering that it is the fulfillment of a childhood dream professional athletes often use it as a grandstand for their social, political, and personal views.  They can become arrogant and self-serving when they have the opportunity to be an example to young people of how to act with humility and respect.

Fans can be even worse.  They become obsessed, angry, and violent over a game.  We have all seen the accounts of riotous behavior at soccer matches or the destruction of property when an American city wins a championship.  We forget that even in our leisure pursuits that we are required to be loving and kind.  At my very first baseball games as a boy, I remember my Grandfather instructing me on polite behavior no matter whether our Braves were winning or losing.

The Father will never ask you why you supported this or that team.  He will never question enjoying some leisure time enjoying a game.  He may ask you about your attitudes, actions, and balance in doing so if they do not line up with loving him and loving all of your fellow humans.  Whether you like it or not even umpires and referees are your fellow humans.  The guy who supports your rival team is a fellow human.

Watching a game with someone can teach us a great deal about ourselves Dear Reader.  We must hold on to our faith and following, even when the calls do not go our way or someone else does wrong.  There are rules to life and they do not end at the edge of the basketball court or the baseball diamond.  If we aim to follow Christ, we need to realize that the activity is not wrong.  God will never ask you about the teams you favored.  He will insist, however, that if we are going to be a fan that when it comes to love and respect, we always play ball by his rules.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
