The song at the end of this post is from the movie, Streets of Fire. In 1984 one could make Action-Adventure Rock Operas. I feel it is an underrated movie with an amazing cast of actors who would go places. The first song in the movie is called nowhere fast. I want to ponder for a moment the vital truth hidden in this obscure song.
We think we have outgrown simple truths like love your neighbor and love the Father with all you are. We say that we want everyone to have freedom as long as that freedom is the kind of freedom we like. You can have any kind of ice cream you want as long as it is chocolate. We run from the truth that everything we do, build, or possess is only the Father extending grace to us so that we can find his love.
The idea is that within this song are some lines of truth that reveal the kernel of my thinking on the subject. I tried to push away the idea of including this in the series of thoughts but that would be running from vital truth. So, here it is. The intent of the song is that she is singing about a guy. That is fine. I believe in authorial intent. The line that possesses eternal truth also applies to a “guy” but that guy is Jesus.
When she sings “And you'll always be the only thing that I just can't be without.” It touches me at my core. The only thing I need is Jesus. Any equivocation on this is running from the truth. Since all truth is God’s truth, I must embrace that anything less than Christ alone is shading the facts. The simple truths seem to be the most profound for me. I am sure you reading this and thinking, well yes.
Here it is though; if this is true then our application of it is very poor. Living in any moment without the presence of Christ is fighting for the chance to be last. It is thinking we are fine without Jesus for that moment. This is going nowhere fast in direct opposition to the truth. We still, however, double down on the accelerator to run from this fact. We may only do it for an instant or maybe for years. We still do it.
I am increasingly convinced of the simplicity of the Gospel. It is this: Love the Father with all that you are. Follow the Son in faith in every moment. Love your fellow humans and help them along the way. What is so genuinely amazing about all of it is that the Father promises us the grace and mercy to do this. He then gives us the will and power to do it through the Spirit. We will look at how theology can be running from truth tomorrow. For today, Dear Reader, give the song a listen and consider how running from truth gets us nowhere fast.
