Greetings Dear Reader,
In the summer of 2016, I wrote a series of Second Thoughts on the song, The Southern Cross. That link will take you to my BLOG archive. I will post the song below. I love the song and it sometimes becomes my earworm in residence.
I woke up with it in my head yesterday and the context was a
single couplet:
“'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small.
But it's as big as the promise; the promise of a comin' day.”
As is my way, I immediately asked what truth I might be evading. That answer will come in a few days after I lead up to it. Instead, I immediately gained a larger perspective. As you know, I am seeking peace this year to add to my foundation of loving always and being lovingly unoffendable. It occurs to me that when we lack these things, it is easy for those around us to run from the truth. We give them excuses no matter how invalid those excuses may be in reality.
I hear in my circle of Christ-followers concern over the vast number of people who are walking away from faith. I know that I have seen this and it concerns me. I feel, however, that one does not simply walk away from faith; one runs from truth. Most of the time it is the result of poor human examples that result in others abandoning Christ. It can also be things that one must give up in order to follow Christ.
What I wish to do is ponder some of these truths from which we run and hopefully fasten them deep within my heart and mind. I will get to the one that I elude to my detriment. I will also suggest some truths that we must embrace if we are to follow Christ well. What I would suggest first, Dear Reader is that you give the song a listen.
Ponder how we have fallen as regards truth. If you think we have not, then that too is a truth from which you might be running. When I first wrote about this song, my beloved friend, Joy, questioned this line: “Spirits are using me, larger voices calling.” I submit that we are used by spirits always. We choose based on following the truth whether it is the Holy Spirit or the other kind. As we journey through this, I cherish your thoughts and questions.
The Southern Cross – Crosby, Stills, and Nash
Got out of town on a boat
Goin' to Southern islands.
Sailing a reach
Before a following sea.
She was making for the trades
On the outside,
And the downhill run
To Papeete.
Off the wind on this heading
Lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline.
Nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon
I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch, I realized
Why twice you ran away.
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me Cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
Lookin' for that woman, girl,
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will.
And you know it will.
When you see the Southern Cross
For the first time
You understand now
Why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from
Is so small.
But it's as big as the promise
The promise of a comin' day.
So, I'm sailing for tomorrow
My dreams are a dyin'.
And my love is an anchor tied to you
Tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship
And all her flags are a-flyin'
She is all that I have left
And music is her name.
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me Cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
Lookin' for that woman, girl,
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will.
And you know it will.
So, we cheated and we lied
And we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
Somebody fine
Will come along
Make me forget about loving you.
And the Southern Cross.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
