Greetings Dear Reader,
We began with a discussion of sustainability. We talked briefly about the need to care for our environment and included all of humanity. Having looked at what remains in several ways, I would tell a story to make my point and draw my conclusions.
I wear ironic or pithy t-shirts most of the time. One friend even asked once if I simply printed my own shirts. Only some of them are designed for me. The rest I acquire from vendors. I have a few favorites and am known for these shirts. People who know me will stop me, comment on the shirt, and this is my point.
I was wearing one this week which pictures Jesus sitting with both Marvel and DC comic book heroes. He is saying, “And that is how I saved the world.” This is one of my favorites. One of my friends who always looks to see which shirt I am wearing got very animated at seeing this one. Excitedly claiming this to be her new favorite, she took a picture of it.
What makes this a story for this series is twofold. First, it is the truth of my friend seeing past everything else to Jesus and his love for her. This is new and beautiful. It is only due to love we are able to share this kind of friendship. The second is how this is now my favorite shirt. It is because it allowed my friend to express her love for Jesus.
There, Dear Reader, is where we find the remainder; we find what will last and sustain us. It is love. It is the love of the Father flowing to us and through us. It is our response of love to him and to others because of him. If we determine to live this way, we will take care of each other, our genuine needs, and the planet. We do not need programs or politics. We need to act out of love for the Father in all we do every moment.
The deeds are all choosing to love others over our own interests. It is what Jesus did to sustain the world. It is what he says are the greatest commands. At the end of all things, when faith is sight and hope is realized, what remains is love. If, therefore, I begin with love, I can sustain all I do walking this narrow path. It will lead me home. You are always welcome to walk it with me, Dear Reader.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
