Tell Me What You See ~ Jesus

Greetings Dear Reader, 

The answer may seem obvious to those who follow him.  Still, I think part of loving someone is seeing them with fresh eyes regularly.  We do not take the time to see Jesus as he is because our own theology and philosophies get in the way. 

The big difficulty with this is we then represent our image of Jesus and not who he really is.  An example would be any time when our philosophy decides Jesus hates someone.  This is always a lie.  Jesus does not hate anyone.  His desire is for us to love the Father and each other. 

There is a popular thought these days claiming Jesus had no power of his own.   This too is in error.  Jesus is and always has been the Son, the Living Word.  As John writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him, nothing came into being that has come into being...And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” 

John wants us to see Jesus as the Living Word who created all things, who dwelt among us, who had the same glory as the Father, and is full of grace and truth.  This is how we must see Jesus.  Luke, Matthew, and Mark all present Jesus in a very particular way as well. 

It is vital for us to look at Jesus honestly.  The filters and blinders we weave into our view of Jesus must, from time to time be removed.  We must take a fresh look at him by seeing his actions, love, grace, and mercy at work in the world.  Further, I must become a constant conduit of those things by living them as I see them in him.  When I first began to follow Christ, the passage above was the first part of the Bible I memorized. 

This brings me to a challenge I would share with you, Dear Reader.   I am going to do it as well.  Read through the Gospel of John noting every time John tells us who Jesus is.  When you are finished, read through the notes without the filters of our presuppositions about Christ.  Look at who Jesus is.  I am going to do this with all four Gospels.  

I would truly be blessed if you did this exercise and shared your thoughts and questions with me.  It is our view of Jesus, shaping our faith and following through which we translate the love of the Father.  It is in Christ alone that we can stand before the Father.  We had best then see him as he is.
