Bright and Salty ~ Salt Pie

Greetings Dear Reader, 

My maternal grandmother, Nana, was an excellent cook.  She did, however, think everything needed salt.  When I first began to learn how to cook, she would say whatever I was making needed salt.  I came to believe that if I was making a salt pie, she would think it needed salt.  In truth, it was just her standby comment about anyone’s food including her own. 

We are to be salt but not in a way to stand out.  Unless a food is supposed to be salty like chips, the function of salt is to enhance the flavor of its host.  People who salt their food before tasting it are seeking the flavor of salt not the flavor of the food.  This is not wrong but it does hide the genuine flavors they could experience.  

In the same way, our function as the salt of the earth is to be humble.  We are to season our speech with things leading to others discovering the wonderful flavors of the Father’s love.  If the flavor of our interaction does not cause others to see the Father as good, we are being too salty.  If we are not enhancing the love of the Father intentionally, we are not salty enough. 

There are those who insist on judging, condemning, and even hating those who do not follow Christ.  They seem like salt pie to those needing to taste and see the LORD as good.  It is my obligation to stand for what is right and good without standing out as a hater or judge.  

The true function of salt is a humble one, Dear Reader.  It is an opportunity to use our love for the Father to also flavor our lives with kindness, grace, and mercy.  It is our chance to let others see the sweetness found in faith and following.  This always leaves a good taste in my mouth.
