Greetings Dear Reader,
In this country, we are guaranteed the right to pursue happiness. This is not wrong. I feel that it does, however, get too much attention. We seem to pursue it over things that may be more vital to our lives.
fI we ponder how the idea of happiness impacts us, we may be able to see that our emphasis might need to be elsewhere. I am going to start with the center of relationships, the family. Often in movies, the question will be asked, “Does he/she make you happy?” People leave marriages because they are not happy.
The problem is that we have a skewed view of the source of happiness. It is not your responsibility to make anyone else happy, Dear Reader. It is not right for me to depend on others to make me happy. Happiness is a very fleeting feeling. It is hard to sustain and ultimately it is a choice. Dwell on that thought for a moment with me. Happiness is a choice.
Unconditional love is not based on happiness. Since love is to be the foundation of all of our relationships, we cannot base them on our happiness. If we are not happy, we need to examine the state of our love, grace, kindness, and forgiveness. If others behave in ways that hurt or anger us, the first source of examination must be our own hearts.
The thing that abides in us that is like happiness is joy. We find lasting joy through seeking the Father first. Again, our prime directive, to love the Father with all that we are sets us up for real lasting joy in our lives. No matter how things unfold, for weal or for woe, we can journey in joy.
It is not wrong to pursue happiness, Dear Reader. It is wrong to place it above love for others, love for the Father, and seeking home. The journey is not about seeking happiness. It never has been. I must seek Home, the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness. I must pursue Jesus and follow him in faith. I am learning that if I do this, happiness does not become a question.
